Fact 1 |
|
"George Trimble and two brothers, William and Samuel, Natives of County Antrim in the north of Ireland, migrated to Conecocheague Valley, Pennsylvania. Samuel was about nineteen years of age. He located near the site of the old brick yard at Indiana. He was driven away by Indians and went back to Conecocheague Valley and remained there about seven years. In 1796 he returned to what is now Indiana County." This quote is from a page in the surname file at the Clark House library in Indiana. It attrributes this paragrah to Caldwell's History of Indiana County. But Caldwell's history, while telling a similar story, mentions only George Trimble and no brothers. It also does not name County Antrim as the Trimble home in northern Ireland. I don't know the source of this information, and since it misquotes Caldwell, it is of questionable accuracy..1,3 |

The following was posting on the Indiana, PA message board at genforum: Posted by: Richard McElhoes Date: July 08, 2000 at 08:39:19 In Reply to: McElhoes family in Indiana County by Lois Rura
The information I have was prepared by Joseph Isaiah McElhoes, my great-uncle, and handed down to me by my father Waldo Steele McElhoes. Joseph was my grand-father's brother. My grand-father was Frank Thompson McElhoes. They were the sons of John K. McElhoes and his wife, Margaret (nee Thompson). According to this information, Thomas Isaiah McElhoes was the son of John McElhoes who had emigrated from Scotland to Philadelphia.Thomas moved from Philadelphia to what is now Indiana County but back then, Westmorelnd County. He settled on a farm called the Block House. It was a trading post of note and was a supply point for both Indiana and Armstrong Counties.Thomas, commonly known as Isaiah, is generally supposed to have been buried in what is known as the Curry Run Cemetery with other family members. In 1991 I went to Home, PA, the site of the original McElhoes homestead and visited the Washington Presbyterian Cemetery there and found a McElhoes family plot. Some of the headstones were very badly weathered but we were able to discern the name of Isaiah McElhoes on one. A small American flag was on a small staff inserted in the ground beside the headstone with an attached medallion stating that the person buried there was a veteran of the Revolutionary War. .4 |

In the first place I will that all my just debts and funeral expenses be discharged - and in the next place I will and allow to my son James all my real estate on which I now live.7 |

- (The Ancestral File lists children for an Isaiah McElhoes. But in the 1800 census of Westmoreland County (from which Indiana was formed) and the 1810 census of Indiana County I found a Thomas McElhoes, with the right number and ages of children, but not an Isaiah. I have seen undocumented references to him as Thomas Isaiah McElhoes, so until I have a chance to do personal research into this family I will list him as Thomas Isaiah.).

I would guess that he died before 1830 because there are never four sons in the census. I have no verification of the birth date of 1823 either, but I'd think he died in the same decade in which he was born. |
