George Trimble
b. 1747, d. 25 April 1810

Last Edited 16 Jul 2005

Birth 1747  George Trimble was born in 1747.1
Marriage circa 1775  He married Jennet Jane Mearns circa 1775.1,2
Death 25 April 1810  George Trimble died on 25 April 1810 at Indiana County, PA.1
Fact 1   "George Trimble and two brothers, William and Samuel, Natives of County Antrim in the north of Ireland, migrated to Conecocheague Valley, Pennsylvania. Samuel was about nineteen years of age. He located near the site of the old brick yard at Indiana. He was driven away by Indians and went back to Conecocheague Valley and remained there about seven years. In 1796 he returned to what is now Indiana County." This quote is from a page in the surname file at the Clark House library in Indiana. It attrributes this paragrah to Caldwell's History of Indiana County. But Caldwell's history, while telling a similar story, mentions only George Trimble and no brothers. It also does not name County Antrim as the Trimble home in northern Ireland. I don't know the source of this information, and since it misquotes Caldwell, it is of questionable accuracy..1,3
Census 1800  George Trimble appeared on the census of 1800 at Armstrong Township, Westmoreland County, PA, as follows: 02201-01101.4
Census 1810  George Trimble appeared on the census of 1810 at Little Britain Township, Indiana County, PA, as follows: 00201-10101 Indiana County was formed from Westmoreland County in 1803, so I believe he did not move, his land just fell into a new county.5
Will 16 February 1810  George Trimble left a will on 16 February 1810 at Washinton Twp, Indiana County, PA. In the name of God Amen. This thirteenth day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and ten. I George Trimble of Washington Township and County of Indiana being weak in body and now in the sixty fourth year of my age but perfect in mind and memory (thanks be to God) thereford calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die Do make and ordain this my last Will and testament that is to say principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul to Almighty God that give it and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in a decent Christian burial at the discretion of my family nothing doubting but at the general resurection I shall receive the same again by the Almighty power of God. and as touching such worldly estate where with it hath pleased God to bless me in this life: I give devise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form, viz. First I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Jennet all my household ?plainching (one bed and bedding excepted) her pick of the horses and one cow to be kept on the place summer and winter and the f??? room of some sufficient and good place in lieu thereof and half a bushell of flax sowed yearly and the privilege of the orchard and a sufficient quantity of grain and other necessaries suitable for a good and decent way of sustenance during her life time all to be provided and given by my son Samuel Trimble and also one hundred dollars in cash to be paid out of the outstanding debt when collected and as formerly gave and confirmed to my son William Trimble one hundred and nine acres of land to live by deed for and in lieu of his part of my estate and has since bought it from him and paid him for the same which I will and allow to be his full and sufficient part of my estate and two dollars in cash at my decease. I do give and bequeath unto my son John Trimble two hundred and twenty five acres of land whereon he is now living. I also give and bequeath to my daughter Mary Cummins and her husband the sum of one hundred dollars to be paid out of the outstanding debts when collected. I give and bequeath to my son George Trimble two hundred and fifty nine acres of land being the same that I bought from my son William together with the house creatures that he claims and one cow him paying his mother in dollars yearly. I do have and bequeath to my grandson George Cummins the sum of fifty dollars to be paid him by my son George when he arrives at the age of fourteen years. I also give and bequeath to my son Samuel Trimble the plantation that I now live on (George's part excepted) together with all the farming utensils and a sufficient part of the grain to support the family and stocks till harvest and his horses that he claims him yielding and paying to my daughter Jennet Trimble as hereafter mentioned. I also give and bequeath to my daughter Jennet Trimble a horse, saddle and bridle her clothing, a bed and bedding two cows and a heiffer and Samuel is to pay my daughter Jennet the sum of two humdred dollars as follows two years after my decease to pay her fifty dollars yearly until the full sum of two hundred dollars is paid. I also will and allow that the rest and remaining part of the horses and the horned cattle be disposed of to the best advantage in order to help to pay off the aforesaid bequeaths and my decease. I also will and allow that if there be any money remaining after these aforesaid bequeath is paid that it be divided equally amongst my family. I also constitute make and ordain my two sons William and Samuel Trimble my sole executors of this my last will and testament and I do hereby ratify and confirm this and no other to be my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this sixteenth day of February AD 1810. Goerge Trimble seal

In Reply to: McElhoes family in Indiana County by Lois Rura

The information I have was prepared by Joseph Isaiah McElhoes, my great-uncle, and handed down to me by my father Waldo Steele McElhoes. Joseph was my grand-father's brother. My grand-father was Frank Thompson McElhoes. They were the sons of John K. McElhoes and his wife, Margaret (nee Thompson).
According to this information, Thomas Isaiah McElhoes was the son of John McElhoes who had emigrated from Scotland to Philadelphia.Thomas moved from Philadelphia to what is now Indiana County but back then, Westmorelnd County. He settled on a farm called the Block House. It was a trading post of note and was a supply point for both Indiana and Armstrong Counties.Thomas, commonly known as Isaiah, is generally supposed to have been buried in what is known as the Curry Run Cemetery with other family members.
In 1991 I went to Home, PA, the site of the original McElhoes homestead and visited the Washington Presbyterian Cemetery there and found a McElhoes family plot. Some of the headstones were very badly weathered but we were able to discern the name of Isaiah McElhoes on one. A small American flag was on a small staff inserted in the ground beside the headstone with an attached medallion stating that the person buried there was a veteran of the Revolutionary War.

Census 1800  Thomas Isaiah McElhoes appeared on the census of 1800 at Armstrong Township, Westmoreland County, PA, as follows: McIlhoes, Thos 11101-01001.5
Census 1810  Thomas Isaiah McElhoes appeared on the census of 1810 as follows: Thos McElhoe 00301-00101.6
Will 2 April 1821  Thomas Isaiah McElhoes left a will on 2 April 1821 at Indiana County, PA. I Thomas McElhoes of Armstrong Township Indiana County being weak of body but of perfect mind do make and ordain this my last will and testament, that is to say, principally and first of all I recommend my soul to God that gave it and for my body to be buried in a decent manner, and touching such worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life I give and dispose of the same in the manner following (viz). In the first place I will that all my just debts and funeral expenses be discharged - and in the next place I will and allow to my son James all my real estate on which I now live.7

But in the 1800 census of Westmoreland County (from which Indiana was formed) and the 1810 census of Indiana County I found a Thomas McElhoes, with the right number and ages of children, but not an Isaiah. I have seen undocumented references to him as Thomas Isaiah McElhoes, so until I have a chance to do personal research into this family I will list him as Thomas Isaiah.).
