Note |
|
There are two conflicting sources for Editha's surname. Rev. Plinius Moody, writing in the mid 1850's, stated the following "I have been unable to obtain the record of this marriage or to ascertain of a certainty to what branch of the Kellogg family she belonged. Her Christian name was Editha and the testimony among her descendants, -some of whom have till the present time, in one unbroken line, occupied the same homestead on which they settled and even the same house in which she and her husband died, - is undisputed, that her maiden name was Kellogg. Besides, an ancient chest, which from the curious carved work upon it was evidently designed as part of the marriage dower, is still carefully preserved: this bears deeply engraved upon it the letters E.K. and the family in whose possession it is say that Capt. Daniel Moody (who died in 1828) used to say that the chest belonged to his grandmother whose name was Kellogg before marriage." Rev Moody goes on to say that he had tried to figure out which Kellogg family she belonged to and been unsuccessful. He mentions that Lieut Joseph Kellogg "seems to have been about the only one of the name in this vicinity having children of a corresponding age," but that his probate record mentioned no daughter Editha. He suggested that she might have been a daughter of Samuel Kellogg of Hatfield by his second wife Sarah Root.
Now the other alternative is that Editha was the daughter of John Day of Hartford. This is given for a fact by Lucius Barnes Barbour in his Families of Early Hartford. Mr. Barbour does not give any evidence or discussion, just lists her name in the family.
I have weighed the limited evidence available to me and decided that Mr. Barbour is more likely to be correct for the following reasons. (1) Mr. Barbour was a Day descendant (this from his fahter's memorial in the NEHGR) himself, and so would have done personal work on this family, more so than for an unrelated Hartford resident. He would likely have had access to handed-down family information that would be at least as good as the family tradition related to Rev. Moody. (2) I know from personal experience that family tradition can be wrong. Editha Moody's son Joseph did marry a Kellogg, so it's possible that the family tradition could have confused her surname with that of someone in Joseph's wife's background. (3) Rev Moody wrote before the Kellogg genealogy was written. A very comprehensive Kellogg genealogy was written in 1903, which details a very large number of descendants, including the children of Samuel Kellogg and Sarah Root, who were proposed by Rev. Moody as possible parents for Editha. There is no mention of her in the book whatsoever. (4) We know from John Day's will (See Hale, House) that he had at least three daughters, of whom the names of only two are recorded. So Editha could logically fit into his family. She is also of a reasonable age to fit among the list of his children, and of course since his mother's name was Editha that would be a logical name for a daughter of his. I have attempted to review all Hartford vital and church records available through microfilm, and have not found any record that could be Mr. Barbour's source for Editha being a child of John Day. I have no idea where to research this further.1,3,4 |
