Note |
|
The Moffatt book and the Pierce book both gave Mary's parents as William and Anne Fiske. G. Andrew Moriarty, writing in the New England Genealogical Register, lists her as a daughter of Nicholas Fiske, William's uncle. The Moriarty version seems more plausible to me for the following reasons: (1) The main source for the Fiskes of Laxfield is something called the "Candler Manuscripts," which were authored by Matthias and Philip Candler who lived in the mid 17th century. Matthias was the son of Hannah Fiske Candler, daughter of William and Anne. Their family tree of the Fisher family starts with Fisher of Styleham, no first name given, married to Mary Fiske, no parents given, and goes on to name her children Joshua and Anthony who emigrated to America, and Amos, farmer in Essex. Now if Mary were the daughter of William and Anne, then she would be Candler's aunt. If she were, it seems unlikely to me that he wouldn't know her husband's first name. (2) William Fiske's will, dated 1616, which is quoted by Pierce and Moriarty, names five children, and a number of grandchildren, not including a child Mary or any grandchildren named Fisher. We know that in 1616 Mary was alive and living in Suffolk and so were her children. (3) Nicholas' will, dated 1569, also quoted iby Moriarty, does name a daughter named Mary, although at that date she was a minor and not yet married. (4) Mary Fisher's son Joshua was baptised in 1584. I know women got married early in those times, so she was born at least by 1570 or earlier. That fits with the ages of Nicholas' minor daughters from 1569. Moriarty says William was born about 1550, so he could have had a child by 1570, although I don't think men got married quite so young. For Mary to have been his daughter he'd have had to father her at age 20 and then she's have had to have Joshua at age 14. Both are possible but more of a stretch than if she were the daughter of Nicholas.6,7,8 |

Note |
|
Moriarty states that Johan was "probably a second wife." From the wording of the will, I don't think I agree. The will says "if William dye afore his mother," which implies to me that she's his mother, not stepmother. And since he's not mentioned as a minor, but on the contrary is to have the lands upon his mother's death and pay money to his sisters, he must be older than the sisters. Therefore if Johane is his mother then she is the mother of the girls as well. The only other explanation is that she's really his step-mother, or that he's only an infant, younger than the girls. But then I think mention would have been made of that fact. Clifford Stott has made exactly the same obseration that I have, and believes that Johan is indeed the mother of the girls.3,4,5 |
Will |
20 August 1569 |
Nicholas Fiske left a will on 20 August 1569. The will of Nicholas Fiske of Dinnington [co York], dated 20 August 1569. I betake my soul to the great and infinite mercy of Almighty God my creator redeemer and savior. To be buried in Dinnington churchyard. To Wife Johane, my messuages, lands, tenements, meadows, feedings, and pastures in Dinnington, which I lately purchased of my father-in-law William Crispe of Laxfield, for life. Wife Johane shall well and honestly educate and bring up my four children, namely, Rachel, Ester, Mary, and Martha, my daughters, until they shal be of lawful age. To "the sayde William my sonne" and his heirs for ever all my said messuages and lands both free and bond after the death of my wife Johane, on condition he pay to "his brother and sisters" £80, as follows: to Amos Fyske my son £30; to Rachell Fyske, Ester Fiske, Marye Fiske, and to Martha Fiske, my daughters £10 each; payment to be made at the rate of £5 a year after the entry on the premises, to my daughter Rachel her £10 by even portions the 7th and 8th years after the entry, to my daughter Ester £10 equally the 9th and 10th years after the entry, to my daughter Mary £10 equally the 11th and 12th years, and to my daughter Martha £10 equally the 13th and 14th years. If "the sayde William Fyske the elder my son" die without heirs of his body or refuse to pay the £80, the lands and tenements shall remain to my son Amos Fyske, his heirs and assigns on the same condition. The other £10 [of the £80] to the poor, to be paid the 15th and 16th years after the entry on the premises, to be distributed by the churchwardens within one month after receipt. "If William dye afore his mother" having a child or children, Amos shall have the land paying to William's child or children £10 and to my daughters five marks apiece "beginning again at the eldest." To my wife, all my novesbles and implements. Wife appointed executrix. Witnesses: John Marshall, John Fiske the elder, John Fiske the younger, Christopher Harsaunte, Robert Capon. Proved at Hoxne [co Suffolk] 28 September 1569 by the executrix. (Archdeaconry of Suffolk (Ipswich Probate Registry) Book 23 f 71).4 |
