February 17, 1762 in Augusta Co., VA, daughter of JOHN GRAHAM and ELIZABETH ???.  She was born Abt. 1740 in Augusta Co., VA, and died in Augusta Co., VA.

Notes for COL. JAMES GRAHAM, SR.:

In the spring of 1777 Indians made an assault on the Graham homestead.  James blocked the door with a heavy bench and a tub of water.  A man named McDonald (or Caldwell) was shot and killed.  Unable to gain entrance to the house, the Indians turned their assault upon the detached kitchen.  In this outbuilding slept a young Negro man and two of the Graham children.  The Negro, whose name was Sharp, tried to escape by climbing up the chimney, but was found, tomahawked and scalped.  The Indians shot up through the ceiling wounding the boy, John Graham, in the knee, then dragged him and his sister down and out into the yard. Finding that John was wounded too badly to be taken prisoner, they at once dispatched him with the tomahawk and carried off his scalp.
Col. Graham was shooting into the yard from the upstairs porthole.  He had killed one or more of the Indians.  When daylight came, it was found that three were dead and 7 yr old Elizabeth was missing.
A few years after this occurrence, an Indian skeleton was found about two miles from the scene.  Graham secured the jaw bone of this skeleton and used it for a gunrack for a number of years.
Graham began searching for his daughter and located her among the Shawnee tribes in what is now Chillicothe, Ohio after many months.  She had been adopted by a squaw of one of the chiefs of the Cornstalk family of that tribe.

In 1785 Colonel Graham finally succeeded in ransoming and bringing his daughter back home.  By now, she had spent half her life with the Indians and it is said that she had an Indian lover.  The price paid for her release was the release of an Indian prisoner, thirty saddles and a lot of beads and other trinkets, and about $300.00 in silver.  The exchange took place at Limestone Creek, where is now Maysville, KY.  Graham reversed the shoes on the horses to prevent recapture.
The homecoming was a difficult one.  The white customs were strange to Elizabeth.  She attempted to run away and return to the Indians, and "ever and anon would clamor for the wild life of the wigwam".  Finally, with time, she adjusted, and married Joel Stodghill in 1792 and settled on Hans Creek, Monroe Co., WVA, and to them were born five sons and four daughters.
