Civil War Records

Liberty Courtney served in the Civil War.  We ordered his pension records to determine who the widow Elizabeth Courtney is and what type of injury left Liberty as an invalid 14 June 1879.

Liberty Courtney, a 45 year old married male, 5 ft. 6 in., with light hair, eyes and complexion was a farmer that was born in Garrett, KY.  He enlisted as a Lieutenant 2nd Class on 02 September 1862 from Bethel, Illinois, Morgan County.  His commission was in Company E, 101st Infantry Regiment Illinois.  He was promtoed to Full Lieutenant 1st Class on 25 December 1862 (at age 46) and resigned on 13 January 1864.  He had enlisted for three years.

Liberty Courtney, a 44 year old married male, carpenter, 5 ft. 4 in., with light hair, blue yes and light complexion born in Kentucky enlisted in Quincy, IL.  The Muster and Descriptive Roll showed that he was from Clayton, Adams County.  The Illinois Roster of Officers and Enlisted Men said that his residence was Columbus, Illinois (also in Adams County). He enlisted as a Lieutenant 2n Class on 16 February 1865.  His Commission was in Company H, 148th Infantry Regiment Illinois.  He resigned on 16 May 1865.  He was promoted to Full Lieutenant 1st Class on 31 May 1865 (Not Mustered).
