Lanier Sign

Lanier Cemetery is located in Payne County, Oklahoma, northwest of Stillwater on the south side of the road 4 miles west of Highway 177 on McMurtry Road. It is in a rural area, surrounded by a chain link fence. Approximately 1.65 acres, located at the northwest corner of Lot 1 , Section 30, T20N, R2E, in Eden Township, near the Noble County border. 361117N Latitude, 0970822W Longitude, Lake Carl Blackwell.

On June 24, 1899, for $1, William D. Lanier deeded the cemetery property to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church of Eden Township, to be used for cemetery and church purposes. In 1986 it was determined that the church had been disbanded for many years, and on May 12, 1987 a quiet title was ordered giving ownership to the Trustees of the Lanier Cemetery Association.

This is an old cemetery, and burials have not been recorded. I've attempted to identify the location of the graves. Click here to see the cemetery plot map and look at lots of photos of the cemetery. Cemetery association records consist mainly of plot maps identified by the owner, and do not identify people buried there. Many graves do not have stones, and some are marked with plain blocks, homemade stones, or temporary funeral home markers that are now unreadable. Some of the older graves have had professional headstones purchased and placed in recent years. There are a number of conflicts between birth and death dates on headstones and in newspaper obituaries. Assistance is needed from family members and friends who have additional informaiton.

Lanier Cemetery has also been known as Clary, Eden, Fair Plains, Pleasant Hill, Johnson, Laneer, and Lanere Cemetery.
