My Ancestors

The Beginnings of My Tree...

A family tree has to begin somewhere, and one of the best ways to get a handle on where your research may lead you is a pedigree chart (below). The same information can be laid out in an Ahnentafel chart (further below). The main difference between the two is that the Pedigree chart is graphical, making the relationships and generations easy to assimilate, whereas the Ahnentafel is strictly text, with its main benefit being that more information can be included about individuals and events.

So many people start out thinking that they will be tracing only one family name, but once they've been bitten by the genealogy bug, they realize that each generation back doubles the families involved. And since it's only an accident of fate that your grandfather was (for example) a Jones, and your grandmother a Smith, instead of vice-versa, they're both equally worth following up. By the time you go just four generations back, you have sixteen ancestors from whom you have received equal portions of your genetic heritage. They've given you your cultural heritage too, so take the time to take a look, because while your genes are always with you, family traditions and history can be lost through the years.

So by all means, start with your own last name, but since I firmly believe that genealogy is the best way to find out how we all interconnect, don't neglect your other ancestors' families!

Note: Other than names, information regarding living people has been removed from these on-line charts to preserve privacy. Please contact me with any questions, comments or concerns - thanks!
