Welcome to our
web site. It is an accumulation of over 40 years of work and many miles of
traveling to visit state vital record repositories, cemeteries and of course friends
and relatives. It currently contains over 34,343 individuals, 12,685 families
and 5,435 surnames. I hope your family is included and if so, will you help us
add to it or give us corrections if necessary?
As with any
project such as this, it is a "work in progress". We have been very
careful to keep all information as accurate as possible, but errors will occur!
Most of the information is documented and/or the source listed in our main data
base. We are more than willing to share information. Additions, corrections,
pictures, etc. are always welcome.
In order to
reduce the amount of searching you must do, the "SURNAME" button will
list all of the surnames in the database and the "INDEX OF PEOPLE"
will also help you out. I am also including buttons to take you to the major
families. They are listed down the page with a short biography on most. More
will be added as time goes on. Just click on the large button to take you to
the family line.
Please take the time to sign my guestbook and
leave some feedback. Thanks! Or you can write me directly at: kenpohl(@)aol.com
We have worked on the family of
Matthew ARMSTRONG for many years. All we could come up with was that he lived
in Sumner County, Tennessee and originally came from North Carolina. From the
census we also knew that his wife's name was Sarah ?????.
Suddenly an old query appeared that led us to Newcombe
County, NC. Wills, land records, etc suddenly filled out Matthew's family and
that of his wife, Sarah HOLLAND. Granted, a good deal of it cannot be
considered "primary" evidence but . . . . The web page for my
Armstrong work is at http://TinyUrl.com/34u68eh
John Ashcraft and his wife, Hannah Osburne, lived in Stonnington, CT
in the 1600's. There is some speculation that John
was from the Barbados but no positive proof at this point. John Ashcraft was Ruth's
8th great grandfather.
John A. Criswell was born
approximately 1800 in ?????. He died in 1845 in
Washington County, Pennsylvania and is buried in Miller's Run Cemetery, Cecil
Twp, Washington County, Pennsylvania. Who were his
parents?
Jacques Dagit
and Marquerite Kahn were from Merxheim,
RheinlandPfalz, Germany.
Their descendants came to the USA in the first half of the 18oo's and settled
in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area. Many of them migrated to St. Clair
County, Illinois.
We believe that Ruth is the eighth gr-granddaughter of Edward Doty of the Mayflower. There is
some question on this since the book by Ethan Allen Doty's book spelled one of
the descendants as Benjamin "Doughty". The Mayflower Society has, as
a result, rejected this line. We have undergone DNA testing through a male
cousin of Ruth's to establish this relationship.
Chester Gibson married Henrietta POHL. She was one of my
father's sisters. These are his ancestors
Ken's maternal grandfather, Paul
August Friedrich KOEHLER came to the USA on the ship "Wesar"
in 1888 when he was 16 years old to avoid military service in Germany. We do
have his family traced back to the late 1700's in KreisRummelsburg, Pommern,
Germany.
William "Billie" McGuffey
came to the US in approximately 1774. The earlier generations were farmers but
later family members were influential in the educational fields. They were best
known for being the authors of the famous "McGuffey Readers"
John J. Melvin was born about 1714
in Buck County, Pennsylvania. His descendants married into both
Ruth's Criswell and Gardner families. Many of the individuals are buried in
Lower Glade Cemetery in Madison County, Ohio.
Ken's paternal grandfather, Johann
Hermann Pohl came to the USA in 1883 on the ship, Hohenzollern from Neuendorf, KreisGriefenhagen, Pommern, Germany.
He worked in Savannah, Missouri as a shoemaker for his uncle, Gottfried (Kolbrenner) Kalkbrenner. After
one year, he went to Douglas County, Kansas where he spent the rest of his
life. In 1884 his father, mother and sister joined him there.
The Stoelzing
(Stoeltzing) family came to the U.S. on the Brig
Victoria from Rotenberg/Fulda in 1846. They landed at New Orleans and proceeded
up the Mississippi to St. Charles County, Illinois. Their son, Johann Conrad Stoelzing was four years old at the time. He enlisted in
the Union Army on August 28, 1861 during the Civil War, 43rd Reg., Co. B,
Illinois Infantry. Conrad was killed, April 7, 1862 at the
battle of Shiloh, Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee.
