1837 Census

In 1837, an act provided for the disposition and repayment of public money. The portion of the money was to be divided among the cities, towns and plantations in proportion to their populations. A special census was taken to determine the population with the following exceptions: "1 Mar. 1837 Unorganized Plantations in Washington Co. excepting foreigners not naturalized, who have not had their residence in this State at least 4 years previous to taking said enumeration and also excepting Indians not taxed."

Aroostook River

Census or Enumeration of all the inhabitants (as existing on the first day of March A.D. 1837) within the bounds of any town or organized Plantation with the following Limits in the County of Washington viz: Northerly of the south line of the Towns of Hodgdon and Linneus, [with the exceptions included above paragraph.]
