James R. Berry one of Huntsvilles most learned Legal lights was born in Jackson County, Tennessee in 1830 and came to Madison County, Arkansas in 1841. Mr. Berry taught school in his early years for two terms and has held various positions of honor. From 1852 to 1860, he was Circuit Clerk of Madison County, and was Assistant Clerk of Madison County and was also Postmaster of Huntsville for six years in 1854.
He was Enrolling Clerk of the House of Representatives and was Assistant Clerk of the same in 1856. In 1861 he was receiver of the Land Office at Huntsville, Arkansas having been appointed by President Lincoln. Mr. Berry was Auditor of the State from 1864 to 1866 and from 1868 till 1873. He was also a Member of the Legislature in 1862 and served as Private Secretary to governor Murphy, and was acting Adjutant General for one year. He served as Justice of the Peace at Little Rock, Arkansas for two years. Since in 1882 he has been practicing in Huntsville and possesses a true legal reputation. Mr. Berry is a Republican of long standing and has done much work for his party.6

Obituary reads...
James R. Berry formerly a resident of Huntsville, died at the home of his daughter in San Antonio, Texas on the 15th inst. He was the first County Judge that Madison County every had and was State Auditor during the Reconstruction period. He was a son-in-law of Gov. Murphy and has numerous relatives in this section, being a cousin of Dolph Berry of Springdale.6
