HENRY JOHNSON AND HIS WIFE, MARY HOSS JOHNSON,
LOCATED IN THIS COMMUNITY IN MAY 1854. A MAN
WITH A VISION HE BUILT THE FIRST RAILROAD STATION,
FREIGHT STATION, GENERAL STORE, RESTAURANT AND
HOTEL. THE SMALL COMMUNITY HE STARTED WAS
CHARTERED AS JOHNSON CITY, TENNESSEE, ON DECEMBER
1, 1869. ON JANUARY 3, 1870, JOHNSON WAS ELECTED
THE FIRST MAYOR OF THE CITY WHICH BEARS HIS NAME,
RECEIVING AN UNANIMOUS VOTE FROM THE 60 REGISTERED
MALE VOTERS. AN OUTPOURING OF SORROW UPON HIS
DEATH TOLD PLAINLY THAT HE WAS BELOVED AND
RESPECTED BY ALL WHO KNEW HIM.
