David and Clarissa were half first cousins, one generation removed. Clarissa's maternal grandfather, Giles Hudspeth, was the half-brother of David's father, John Hudspeth.

David was just three years old when his father, the Sheriff and Tax Collector of Surry Co., NC, was murdered in 1780. His father's will indicated that David was to inherit the 600-acre family plantation after the death or remarriage of his mother. That land apparently was lost to satisfy debts of the estate and was acquired by his Uncle David Hudspeth in 1789 for 20 pounds, 11 shillings, 8 pence.

[I have a copy of the will, from LDS film #0019972, Book 1, Page 142. The land transaction is in Surry Co., NC, Deed Book E:147. Settlement of the estate in Surry Co was 5 Aug 1797 - File 170-A.]
[I have copies of the will and inventory, but not the settlement.]

1786 NC State census, Surry Co.-- David, along with his two brothers and two sisters were living in the household of their mother, Mary.

1790 federal census, Surry Co., NC -- David must have been the male under 16 living with his mother. I don't know where the other four children were.

1800 -- I don't find David or his mother on the federal census. Maybe she had remarried.

David and Clarissa were married about 1804, probably in Surry Co., NC.
[I don't find a marriage bond for them.]

Is he the David on the 1810 Surry Co., NC census?
The children don't quite match; there should be another male under 10 (Andrew):
1 male & 1 female under 10 [John & Matilda?]
1 male, 26 to 45
1 female, 16 to 26
1 female over 45 [David's mother, Mary?]
1 slave

1812 Surry Co., NC tax list (L. L. Hagerty gedcom)
David listed as having 496 acres, paying 1 white poll tax.

They were in North Carolina at least until 16 Nov 1815, and were in Kentucky by 1820.

[This is from the birthplaces of their children, as listed on the 1850 federal census of Dade Co., Missouri.]

They went to Monroe Co., KY, where David was listed as taxable in 1820, along with Wm., Sr. and Jr., Giles, and John, Sr. Hudspeth and Timothy Coe.

David listed on Monroe Co., KY federal censuses for 1820 & 1830.
(L. L. Hagerty gedcom)

In 1836 Clarissa Hudspeth (called Clary in her father's will) was bequeathed two slaves and a share of the remainder after the death of her mother.
[I have a copy of the will. A copy is on file at the Archives in Raleigh, NC. The sale and settlement are in the Surry Co. Inventories, Accounts & Settlements, Files 1836 162-A and 1839 41-A, per LDS film #347726.]

Clarissa's mother, Jemima, died in 1850/51. From Katie Sater Smith I received the following abstract of Book 7, p 107 (I assume that must be Surry Co., deed book): "15 Feb 1850, Clarissa Hudspeth, formerly Clarissa Coe, of Dade Co., MO, to Rufus Hudspeth of Dade Co., MO, my son, convey all interest in the estate of my father, Isaiah Coe, Decd., late of Surry Co., NC."

The first record I find for this family in Missouri is in 1838, when David and his two oldest sons, John and Andrew D., acquired land. David's three purchases totaled 279.91 acres.
[U. S. Land Sales in Missouri, Springfield Land Office]
They were on the 1840 census for Smith Township, Barry Co., MO.

David died Aug 3, 1848 in Dade Co., Missouri, and is buried there in Pennsboro Cemetery. His tombstone reads "David Hudspeth 7 May 1777 - 3 Aug 1848."

The 1850 federal census shows Clarissa, a widow, with all six of her surviving children nearby -- also nieces, nephews, and cousins. I found 16 households of her family, with 73 persons.
In Clarissa's household:
HUDSPETH Clarissa age 62 born NC Real estate value $650
Andy 27 or 29 VA Laborer
Catharine 24 KY
Clarissa 6 MO
I believe that Andy is Andrew MORRIS, who married Catharine Hudspeth in 1842.

The penmanship on the census makes the two Clarissas look like Clansa.

Clarissa died April 6, 1857, in Dade Co., MO and is buried there in Pennsboro Cenetery. Her tombstone reads, "Born 1787 - Died 1858."

Below is an abstract of her will (THROUGH THE YEARS WITH THE HUDSPETHS, Vol. V, p 175, by Anna G Ford: "Will of Claracy Hudspeth 28 Sept. 1853. Son, R. Hudspeth for sole use and benefit of dau. Catherine Morris. Son Rufus ten cents. Grandchildren,

Lucy G., John, Claracy, Benjamin F., William D., and Rufus, children of Andrew D. Hudspeth (not named) ten cents each.
To Mary Ann Scott, wife of Daniel W. Scott, Jr., Dennis, David C., Jane, Isiah C. and Rebecca C. Springer, children of Aaron Springer, ten cents each.
To Jessie Hudspeth and Almiry Spears, ten cents each.
Dau. Matilda McBride, son Rufus sole executor Will proved 13 April 1857, and refers to her as Claracy Hudspeth, Sr."
[Jesse & Almery were orphans of Clarissa's son John, who died 12 Sep 1851.]

Much of the data for David and Clarissa and their family is from a family group sheet from Carlene P. Brown, from an article by Melba A. Rector in OZAR'KIN, Vol. VII, No. 3, Fall 1985, from D.A.R. Report #505664, and from material sent by Katie Sater Smith.
