CARL/CHARLES & MARYWAGNER - Prussia, New York, Wisconsin -1800's

Compiled by LaVere Peters

The few records I've found for these people provide some conflicting (or at least, confusing) information.

In his document of intention to become a citizen of the United States, filed in Outagamie Co., Wisconsin, on October 30, 1868, there are two names; at the top of the document he is Charles Wagner, and at the bottom, Carl Wagner. He states that he was born in Germany and is renouncing all allegiance to the King of Prussia. He states that he was born in 1836 and landed in New York in June, 1866.

I don't know when Mary came to America or when/where they were married.

The 1870 census for Outagamie Co., WI, enumerated on August 3, lists the Wagner family as follows:

Geo. age 34 born Prussia Farmer Property value $1,370

Mary 34 Prussia

Mary 9 New York

Esther 9 New York

Charles 8 New York

John 4 Wisconsin

Fredy 1 Wisconsin

[How did Carl or Charles become George?]

[If Carl/Charles arrived in New York in June, 1866,

it's unlikely that he was the father of the four older

children.]

The 1880 census for Outagamie Co., WI, enumerated June 2, lists the Wagner household as follows:

Mary age 43 Widow born Mecklenburg

Charles 17 Farmer & Laborer Wisconsin

John 14 At School "

Fred 11 " "

Lena 8 " "

William 6 " "

Ludwick 4 " "

Eureca BEAR 19 Step Daughter/Servant New York

Parents born in Prussia & Mecklenburg

[Carl/Charles must have died between 1875 and 1880, based

on the age of the youngest child.]

[The twins, Mary and Esther, are gone from the household, and

I haven't found any further information for them.]

[Says Charles was born in Wisconsin rather than New York.]

[Might Euraca have been a foster daughter rather than a

stepdaughter?]

Death dates for Carl/Charles and Mary can be closely estimated based on tax lists -- Carl/Charles, 1878/79, and Mary, 1900-1904. I didn't find Mary on the 1900 census.

Their 80-acre farm can be located on a map as the east half of the southwest

quarter of Section 24, Township 22 north, Range 17 east. The taxpayers for the real estate are listed as follows, with the name variously spelled as

Wegener, Wagener, Wagnor, Wegner, Waegner, and Wagner.

1864 R. Maley

1865 A. Wegener

1866 C. Wegener

1867 Carl Wagner

1869 Charles Wagner

1870-1878 Carl Wagner

1879-1900 Mary Wagner (after 1900 I have the lists in 5-year increments)

1905-1930 Charles Wagner (the oldest son of Carl/Charles & Mary))

1935-1945 Alvina/Mrs. Charles Wagner

1950-1970 Harley Wagner (youngest son of Charles and Alvina)

The land holding was reduced to 40 acres about 1940 and to 20 acres about 1955. I don't have the records to show how much longer the land stayed in the family.

The 1890 censuses were destroyed by fire without having been filmed.

The 1900 and 1910 censuses show that several of the children of Carl/Charles and Mary Wagner continued to live in Outagamie Co., Wisconsin -- Charles, William, Lena, and Ludwick.
