Notes for SR. LAWRENCE DANIEL BRANDON, SR.:
Written from Lawrence Daniel Brandon, Jr.,'s notes, 2003 <[email protected]>
Lawrence and Nannie Mae set up houskeeping in a little house in Winston-
Salem, North Carolina, where Lawrence tried his hand at selling insurance. It
was not to be, Lawrence found being a salesman was not for him. His first love
was farming, and he was angry with his father for selling the family farm. They
moved to Person County, in 1947 shortly after the birth of their son Dan, so
Lawrence could pursue his love of farming. For a year he farmed with Nannie's
father, Patrick Henry Briggs, until he received another offer. Bruce Pope, his
brother-in-law who also operated a Dairy farm, informed him of an opportunity
to farm with Isaac Terry. He accepted Isaac's offer to furnish all the equipment , all the land
the barn, half the cows and help with the labor when he could, while Lawrence,
would furnish, all of the labor and half the cows. They sold milk to
Long Meadow Dairy in Durham, N.C. However, Lawrence continued to search
for a farm of his own for eight years while farming with Isaac.
A feed truck driver told Howard Brevort that Lawrence was looking for a dairy
farm. Howard came to see Lawrence about selling him his Wake County Dairy
Farm. The following week the Brandon Family went to see the farm. there was
sixty six acres of land, a new milk barn with electric milking machines, twenty
cows more or less, John Deer tractor with bush and bog harrow, a worn out gang
harrow, a NewHolland hay bailer, a JD mowing machine, and a new house. The owner
wanted $35,000 and he wanted to finance. Lawrence probably could have gotten
financing at half that interset rate Mr. Brevort expected, but Lawrence knew the
property was a steal at that price even with the enormous amount of interest.
He was sold on the entire farm and Nannie loved the house. So in the spring of
1956, Lawrence sold his half of the herd of cows in Durham County and moved
his family to the Wake County Farm. Although Nannie stayed in Durham until
the end of the school year so Dan could finish his school year.
Thirty years later the heard increased to sixty plus and the city of Raleigh
surrounded the farm. A developer built a world class golf course on the adjoining
farm. Sixty acres of the orignal farm was sold for one-hundred times the original
selling price and the herd sold for three times the original price of the farm.
Houses across the road are selling for a half million and up, In 2002 the developer built a
golf course on Lawrence and Nannie's land. The developers have been pressuring
the family to sell them the remaining six acres for commercial property. Thirty years
ago Mr. Brevort told Hubert Holding the next-door nieghbor, that he thought
Lawrence wouldn't be able to make the first years payments. However, Lawrence proved he
was a man with forsight , a good businessman and the very best farmer around.
In the early ninties his health began to fail, with diabetes and lung cancer,
Lawrence Daniel Brandon, Sr. died at age 77. Nannies Mae Briggs Brandon died
the following year on November 23, 1995 at age 77. They are buried at _Pine Forest Memorial Cemetery.

Notes for MARY BELLE BRIGGS:
MARY BELLE'S MEMORIES
I, Mary Belle Briggs Pope, have traced my family history three generations back.
I'm the fourth. I have children and grandchildren and am expecting a great grand-baby.
April 1996 which will make seven generations.
This the second day of February 1996. One hundred and ninty years of family history.
Great grandfather Samuel H. Briggs was born May 6, 1806, died May 12, 1870. Great
grandmother Jenny Y. Briggs, born January 20, 1809, died March 23, 1880. From this
marriage was born five daughters and three sons as follows:
Elmira A. Briggs born March 30, 1830, died May 19, 1888
Judie E. Briggs born March 2, 1832, died September 5, 1898
Lorenzo L. Briggs born May 15, 1834, died June 9, 1853
Martha E. Briggs born January 14, 1837, died July 26, 1909
George K. Briggs born March 15, 1839, died December 12, 1912
John Dolphin Briggs born September 9, 1841, died May 18, 1887
Mary E. Briggs born November 28, 1851, died May 20, 1915
Samuel H. and Jenny Y. Briggs were my great grandparents. George K. Briggs and
Martha Sheperd Coleman Briggs were my grandparents. In the year of 1866 my
grandfather, George married Martha Coleman and from that union was born four children:
Patrick Henry Briggs born 1869, Minnie Briggs, Jennie Briggs and Charles Vernon Briggs.
Patrick Henry was born in Person County, Hurdle Mills being the post office. They
lived in a log cabin about one mile from my homeplace. At five years old, my father along
with the family moved to Guilford County. Grandpa George built a large farm house where
they all grew up.
When Papa was a young man, he went to work on the Norfolk and Western Railroad as
a Breakman. After working there a few years, he joined the Barnam and Bailey Circus, with
whom he stayed until in his forties. At that time the circus traveled by rail, and my father
drove an eight horse team wagon from the train station to the circus ground carrying all the
equipment. They showed under big tents. There was a lot of work putting up the show. Papa
used to tell us children endless stories about the circus, and when it cme to town our parent
made sure we saw it. Papa still knew a lot of the crew. We always looked forward to going
to the circus.
Papa left the circus in the winter of 1915. He went back to Guilford County to help his
family. Grandpa George had a brother, Dolphin Briggs. Dolphin had a daughter, Jenny and
a son, John. George and Dolphin had a brother, Lorenzo, who died at age nineteen. They
had five sisters. They lived in Person County near where my father grew up, my great-
grandfather's homeplace. I can barely remember the old kitchen where they cooked and ate.
Their living and bedroom quarters were in another building.
The five aunts who lived there were never married. They were known to all as the five old
maid aunts. After the death of their parents, the sisters decided they wanted to build a new
home. So they built an eight room dwelling with two big halls, living room, kitchen, walk-in
pantry, five bedrooms, a picket fence around the house.
The sisters voted to put Mary, the youngest of the sisters, in charge of the farm which she
ran hiring the farm hands and keeping everyone busy. All the sisters worked in the fields
along with the help.
It was sid at one time when needing rain desperate one night in her nightly prayer one
sister prayed that the good Lord would send them rain at night so the poor white people and
the Negroes could work in the daytime.
Aunt Jackie, a colored lady, was the cook and lived in the home and care for the sisters.
They also believed that if a person didn't have a home they provided one for them. So they
took in Minnie Stevens, a girl who had no home. She was a young girl. Soon she became
the housekeeper and lived there until the last one died.
In the late 1800's and early 1900's the sisters began to die. Aunt Mary, as Papa called her,
was the last survivor. She was getting old and her health failing Jackie had died and she and
Minnie was the only ones left. Aunt Mary realized she could no longer manage the farm. So
She got in touch with Papa to come see her. He went and they made a deal that if Papa lived
with her and ran the farm she would leave it to him. He moved there in late winter, sewed the plant beds, cut flu wood and plowed the field ready for planting.
Papa was a young bachelor and was thinking it was time to settle down. He began courting Eva Moore, a neighbor of Aunt Mary's, that he had known for some time. So Papa stayed busy on the farm during the day and courted at night.
One hot summer day Papa came came to the house for dinner. He was on the back porch washing his hands. He heard Aunt Mary say to Minnie, if cousin Pat doesn't come, they would eat. Papa heard Minnie tell her he was on the back porch washing his hands. When he walked in the kitchen, Aunt Mary had slumped in her chair. He called to her. She never spoke again.
Aunt Mary had a stroke and died around 5:00 o'clock that afternoon.
In those days everyone was shrouded at home. The neighbors went in and put shrouded on their death bed. The coffin was brought in by the undertaker, and the body was placed in it, then carried to the parlor where it was ready for viewing.
As my father and Eva were very much in love, she came with her family. Papa asked her to help with the shrouding. Then everyone wore long dresses and petticoats. They had to climb
onto the bed to dress the corpse. Someone told Eva to slip her slip off. She had on a black skirt and black petticoat. After they had finished and left the room, Papa was talking to Eva and she realized she was only wearing her petticoat. After that Papa teased her about courting in her petticoat.
That fall, November 15, 1915, my father married my mother , Eva Dale Moore, daughter of Abraham Venerable and Nannie Hawkins Moore at her home. They had five children:
John Eddie Briggs, born October 4, 1916
Nannie Mae Briggs, born September 25, 1918
Mary Belle Briggs, born June 9, 1920 (me).
Patrick Henry Briggs, Jr., born November 4, 1921
George Kenneth Briggs, born January 30, 1923.
Papa and Mama lived in Aunt Mary's home. She never got around to making a will. So Papa having had two sisters and one brother and two cousins, the farm had to be divided among them.
Papa bought the others out, so it became his home. We all grew up in Aunt Mary's big farm house. All of us children were close together. We all had childhood diseases together, and laughed ,together and played together.
Cousin John Briggs who was a Baptist minister in Washington, D.C. would send us a big Christmas box. Checker cabs, popguns, trains, spinning tops and many more for the boys. My sister and I got dolls, sewing machines, tea sets, when they were china, and others. My mother got material to make clothes, as she was a good seamstress. Papa got smoking tobacco, neck ties, and hankies. Then there was lots of candy and nuts. That was the highlight of Christmas, because in the twenties and thirties, times were hard. The Great Depression started
about 1928. No one had money. We lived off the farm. We had cows, mules, pigs and chickens. We raised big gardens, plenty of corn and wheat. Made molasses, so we ate well.
Papa was a Missionary Baptist, and we attended Clement Baptist Church all our life until we married and left home. Sometimes we didn't have a car. We walked to church about two miles, the road was either dusty or muddy. So we walked barefooted, carried our shoes and sox in a bag With a shirttail rag and a flour sack towel. We got to the outdoor pool of the church first. We washed our feet and dried them, put on our shoes and sox and went in church. WE went to summer camp at church that was a real treat.
We had the same preacher as long as I could remember. The Rev. L.V.Collins. He and my father died about three weeks apart.
My mother's family was of the Primitive Baptist faith. They had services on Sunday afternoons on the second Sunday. When we left Clement Church, we ate lunch and went to Wheeler's for afternoon services.
MAMA'S FAMILY
My mother grew up two miles from our home, Aunt Mary's house. Grandpa Venerable Moore built the two story frame house where the children all grew up. Mama had two sisters and three brothers.
Mary, the elder, was an old maid. Knox married Belmar Whitfield and they had thirteen children.
Arena married Charlie Briggs, Papa's brother, and they had ten children. Ernest married Lora Long and they had six children.
Eva, my mother married Pat Briggs and there were five of us. Hugh married Bera Bradsher and from that union there were ten children. They all, except Arana, lived
within two miles of each other. It's hard to imagine forty four first cousins growing up together.
Aunt Arena and Uncle Charlie raised their family in Guilford County, at Grandpa George Briggs homeplace.
Mary, the old maid, was known to all the nieces and nephews as Aunt Mamie. She was like a grandmother to us since our grandmother Moore died before most of us were born. Aunt Mamie made her home with Uncle Ernest and family at Grandma and Grandpa's home place. She would visit with
her sisters and brothers staying about two weeks at a time. She would always bring patterns and material when she came to our house, so my mother could help her make a dress while she was visiting us. Aunt Mamie always liked to correct the children. Her favorite words were "aren't you ashamed of yourself."
Kenneth, my youngest brother, would mock her and tease us and pretend he
was her. Kenneth was the funny one in the family.
Aunt Mamie died December 27, 1949 and was buried on my Daddy's birthday, December 28th.
As far back as I could remember that was the only birthday that I remember we didn't have all the family on his birthday. Some times we would have a hundred people for dinner.
My Dear Mother did all the cooking. She baked cakes, eight or ten, killed chickens, boiled hams in the wash pot,
prepared lots of vegetables and fruit salads. We had a wonderful time, until I became a teenager, then my job was to make the biscuits. I have stood in the big walk-in pantry and made biscuits all day. It wasn't as much fun after that. But I cherish the memories today.
On March 30, 1950, my father Patrick Henry Briggs at age eighty years died. MY mother Eva Dale Moore died October 12, 1962. She was seventy seven years old.
John Eddie Briggs, my older brother was born October 4, 1916. He married Geraldine Wilson. They
had three children John E. Jr., James Everett and Janice. They have four grandchildren. John E. died 1983 at age 67. Geraldine died______.
Nannie Mae Briggs was born September 26, 1918. She married Lawrence Brandon. They had two sons, Lawrence D. Jr. , and Frank Brandon. They had two grandsons and a grandaughter. The granddaughter has had two children of her own now, a boy and a girl.
Nannie died November 23, 1995 on Thanksgiving Day. Lawrence Brandon died October 23, 1994.
Patrick Henry Briggs, Jr. born November 4, 1921, died _______. He married Edith Smith Hawkins.
They had one stillborn baby girl. He also had four step children.

LAWRENCE DANIEL BRANDON, JR. FAMILY
Lawrence D. Brandon, Jr. (Dan) graduated from the Agriculture Institute at North Carolina State
College, now North Carolina State University at Raleigh, where he studied animal husbandry, Diary option, in preparation for a career in Dairy Farming on the family farm. After marring Nancy Haasis,
He worked on the farm until a near fatal stroke caused a permanent disability. He, Nancy, Frank and his family and Michelle & her husband still live on what is left of the family farm. Every one is hopeful that the golf course will buy them out, and all can move to the country again. Just before Christmas
