OLD PORTRAITS

This index is for portraits that appear to date from the 1880s to 1910. This is based on the manner of dress along with the appearance of the photographs and the way they are mounted

This picture is one of several in similar frame and size. The photograph is faded, so the contrast scanned was poor. The two woman are standing in a barnyard with a steer in the background. I do not know who the woman are.

This photo shows one girl, one boy and and two women. I can only make a wild guess at who they might be.

Portrait of a unknown woman. The photograph was taken at the William H Kibbe photography studio, located in the Kibbe Building in Johnstown. If anyone can check the city directories for this photography studio to see what period it was in operation, please contact me.

This photograph print has an interesting effect applied to it that makes the edges appear rolled (they really are flat). I do not know who the subject is.

Here is another interest portrait made against a painted backdrop. As can be seen the photographer was W. J. Fell in Fultonville.

I am guessing from the style and mounting, that this photograph was made ca. 1890-1905, perhaps a little earlier. I would presume it was taken in the family's parlor. Note the use of props with one boy holding a chicken, the girl holding a cat, and the other two children holding dolls. (though the lad on the left with the hole in his knee does not seemed too pleased to be posing with a doll.). The original has a brown tone (it was scanned as a gray scale).

There are four copies of this photograph on the left the collection, all are faded and this one is the best quality. One of the photographs has writing in the back in faded pencil and also has "Brower-125-Broad St." and also written on is "Corwall". I guess these may have been made between 1880 and 1900, Adding to the mystery of who these people are is a metal plate shown on the right with what certainly appears to be the photograph of the face of the elderly man and the young woman in the back right of the photograph mounted as an applique to the metal stand with appears to be designed to display photographs. If this photograph dates prior to 1884, I would guess the old man might be Jacob Brower of Mayfield who died on 27 June 1884.

This photograph is mounted on a piece of cardboard that was a Quaker Oats (2 pound) box. The Quaker Oat box was yellow with red lettering. My guess is that the subject may be John DeRonde based on the resemblance to a store keeper in another photograph.

This photograph like the one above is mounted on cardboard from an Quaker Oatmeal box. (this part of thee box lists methods of cooking including Breakfast Porridge, Fried Pudding and Delicious Pancakes or Gems. It also notes "GIVEN HIGHEST AWARD AT WORLDS FAIR 1893" So we can assume the photograph may be ca 1895. The top half of the photo is badly faded with only a vauge outline of the woman on the right, but the man is very clear.

This is one of several photos that are mounted on a white frame. I can data one of the photographs in this style to ca 1892, so I presume they all are from 1890 to 1900 time frame. This one with the young gent must have been a studio portriat with the "stuffed peacock" next to the chair.
