The birth, christening, education & ordination of the Reverend John Leland, Sr.

Dear Mr Leland,

Thank you for your email of 26 August 2001.

I can confirm from the Bishop of London's Ordination Register (Guildhall Library Ms 9535/3) that John Leland senior was ordained a deacon on 16 September 1744 and a priest on 23 September 1744. John Leland junior was ordained a priest on 25 April 1775.

There are ordination papers for John Leland senior (GL Ms 10326/75) comprising a baptism certificate and various letters testimonial (references). They record that John Daulnis De' Lalande, son of Henry De' Lalande and his wife Mary, was born on 24 January and baptised on 12 February 1718 at the French Protestant Church of the Savoy, London. Also that he was educated at the College of Dublin, taught at a County school in Maryland for four years and at a school in Virginia for one and a half years. You may be able to glean further information from a closer look at the letters testimonial.

I am afraid that there are no surviving ordination papers for John Leland junior.
