Wednesday, October 16th, 1833 The Derby Mercury

NOTICES:   Whereas on the Night of Friday, the 27th September last, two Men were detected under suspicious

circumstances on Trespass in a Close in the parish of Normanton-on-Soar, in the County of Nottingham, belonging

to a Mr. Samuel MARSHALL, but decamped, leaving in a Close on the opposite side of the Road, in the occupation

of Mr. STUBBS, a BLACK HORSE, with a halter round his neck, a saddle and bridle, two great coats, and an old horse

rug.  Whoever may own the above, shall, upon giving satisfactory proofs of the same, and paying the expences

incurred, have them restored to him. --- But if not claimed within fourteen days from this date, they will be sold

to defray the said expences without further notice.

NEWS:   ATTEMPT TO UPSET A RAILWAY TRAIN BY TWO BOYS

At the Notts quarter sessions, yesterday, two boys, named Samuel MARSON, 13, and Joseph BRYAN, 9, were

charged with placing two iron railway "chairs" upon the rails of the Midland Railway, at Normanton-on-Soar, on

the 17th May last, thereby endangering the lives of the passengers.  They both pleaded guilty, and were sentenced

to one month's imprisonment with hard labour, his lordship remarking that if they had been of maturer years the

sentence would have been much more severe.

NEWS:   Serious Charge Against a Servant

Amy WHITE, Servant, was charged at Nottingham Assizes to-day with the wilful murder of her new-born illegitimate

child, at Normanton on Soar, on the 24th November.  Prisoner was employed by Mr. RICHARDSON, farmer, and his

housekeeper on the date named found the body with a handkerchief tied round its neck.  Medical evidence showed

that the child had lived , and had been strangled, but not necessarily before the child was completely born.  The

charge was reduced to concealment of birth, upon which the jury acquitted prisoner.
