... We have been given photocopies of a list of births, deaths and marriages in the Hartley family, and some sort copy of a marriage certificate for Mary Indianna Culpepper and James Burrel Hartley. They had several children and their son John Hartley married a Nathalee Wade, and they had three children, one of which is Mary Emma Hartley who married Seaborn Clary. They are Martin's grandparents. Mary ... owns the Clary farm in Araby, GA. I have met her once. She now lives in a retirement home in Cordele, and
we are going to visit her for 91st birthday this weekend. We want to go back to the farm house, because we believe that is where we saw some very old Culpepper pictures. If I find anything, I will try and make a copy for you. We plan to visit the Cedar Creek Cemetary where the Striplings, Hartley's and Clary's are buried. (Martin's father is taking us), and Ebenezer Cemetary where Adelia, I believe David Culpepper and Argent (my great great great grandparents, are buried). I am also going to see if the Cordele Courthouse is open on Saturday, and the Cordele Dispatch to see what else we can find. I have a lot of Raines' family that have worked there and still do I have been told.

Biography* The following is from Aimee Rowden, Atlanta, GA, 8 Feb 2000:
"I spoke with my grandmother last night (Sadie Raines Stripling Kenyon) and found out that Adelia was her grandmother, and my great great grandmother. She also told me that Terrell, Adelia's first husband, had a brother Needham Walter who married Lula Culpepper. I also found it interesting that a man named Benjamin Marion Herrington married three of the Culpepper sisters! My Nana said that they used to joke that he killed the first two, and then Adelia finally killed him! But seriously, I guess dying of stroke was prevalent in the Culpepper women I was told. So there are also a few Herrington's that are half siblings of my great grandmother Ethel Raines. Adelia raised a few of her nieces and nephews (Herrington/Culpepper) when her sisters died (Sarah, and Davie).

From Shirley Brook: I talked with my Aunt Carey C. Manire.

Mary Alvie Culpepper Schubert (1891 Macon, Georgia -1953 Houston, Harris, Texas), daughter of Eula and Warren Ebenezer Culpepper was the owner of the pictures. She had them enlarged and framed from a smaller picture.

Aunt Alvie always told Carey they were pictures of her parents. My Aunt Carey was raised by Alvie and Ed Schubert, and grew up knowing who the pictures were of.
.... Carey does not know when nor where the pictures were taken. She guesses about the turn of the century, since they died 1904 and 1907.5
