Dr. Vernon Grant Culpepper, son of Henry Edward and Martha Helen (Grant) Culpepper, was born September 25, 1856, died October 12, 1905. He attended L. P. Slater's private school after a course in the public schools, and then entered the University of Virginia, from which he was graduated M. D. in the class of 1875. The two years after his graduation he passed in the Charity Hospital, of New York, and after one and one-half years of hospital work in Portsmouth, Virginia, he began general practice, continuing actively until his death. Dr. Vernon Grant Culpepper was a member of the City, County, and State Medical societies, and served on the State Board of Health of Virginia. In politics he was a staunch Democrat, fraternally associated with the Masonic order, belonging to Acca Temple, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and the Knights of Pythias. His religious denomination was the Methodist Episcopal. Dr. Culpepper was a gentleman noted for his devotion to principle in professional or private life, and, ever walking honorably and uprightly through life, left upon those with whom he associated the imprint of a man just and good.
Dr. Culpepper married, in 1880, Etta Franklin Borum, daughter of James T. Borum and his wife, Susan C. (Stokes) Borum. Children: Dr. James Henry, of whom further; Etta Vernon, who married Dr. Stanley Hoke Graves, a medical practitioner of Norfolk, son of Thomas Edward and Louisa (Brockman) Graves.

This is probably the correct birth date, since it was recorded near the time of birth. Also, the 1880 census shows Jeanette to be six years old as of June 1st, which means she would have turned seven in September. Why she apparently used the 1875 birth date is a mystery.

Jan 2013: Please change my Grandmother's name back to Jeanette, I have seen so much paperwork and her name is always Jeanette, not Genetta. Somewhere, somehow a mistake was made and I do not want it perpetuated. My mother spoke of her often, I have books and pictures with her name on them, I have visited her grave several times, always with her name ----- Jeanette. I was named after her, but the spelling was changed to Janetta, to avoid confusion. I'm wondering if that is where the mistake was made. Also her birthdate was 1875 not 1974, although one place it was listed as 1873.

Obituary* | 13 September 1955 | Arthur L Culpepper, 83, husband of the late Mrs. Lula Spivey Culpepper, of 4516 Race Street died in a Norfolk nursing home Monday at 6 p. m. He was a retired carpenter from the Naval Shipyard. He was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church. Surviving are three daughters Mrs. Ethel C Davis of Mobjack, Mrs. Essie N. Bridges, of Portsmouth and Mrs. Kenneth Edens, of Toccoa, Ga; one son, Joseph W. Culpepper, of Portsmouth, two sisters, Mrs. Mary Bunting, of Portsmouth, and Mrs. Maggie James, of Mobjack, 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The body was taken to Brennan Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 10 a. m. at St. Teresa Catholic Church. Rosary services will be conducted at the funeral home Wednesday at 8 p. m. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery.9 |
