PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA, MARRIAGES, 1859-1909 Compiled by Gail Burnell-Melchor [email protected] From the City of Portsmouth Court Records FIRMAN Elizabeth McAlpine to CULPEPPER David Paul 03 Oct 1889

I do not have a date of death for Elizabeth. Harold was a mistake it was Herbert Culpepper.

Family lore:
Culpepper
Aunt Lizzie had a son named Carroll who went to New York as an opera singer. I don't know how much success he had. Lizzie had another son whose name was Herbert. Herbert and his wife Edna lived in Portsmouth. Herbert and Edna Culpepper didn't have any children. They were both very LARGE people. Not overly fat just BIG. They had a little dog that was completely dwarfed by either one of his owners when they picked him up. Our house wasn't far from Portsmouth so Herbert and Edna would come to visit from time to time.

Birth27 November 1882 He was born on 27 November 1882.1
Birth*15 October 1883 James was born at Norfolk Co., Virginia, on 15 October 1883.2
(Son) 1900 Census1 June 1900 James, George and Ernest was listed as a son in James Henry Culpepper's household on the 1900 Census at Deep Creek District, Norfolk Co., Virginia.3
Marriage*1903 He married Mary E. Jones at Norfolk Co., Virginia, in 1903. From Steve Pearsall, [email protected], Sep 2002:

A daughter of William Prentice Pearsall and Iona Culpepper named Virginia Pearsall, born 14 Mar 1924 in Bennettsville, SC, provided the information regarding J. E. Culpepper and wife Lyda Cherry. This info was provided by her on 7 Oct 1977. It is quite possible that J. E. Culpepper married more than once. I can only relate what Virginia Pearsall McCready provided. According to Virginia, Iona Culpepper was born 1 Jan 1901 in Portsmouth, VA. This is in conflict with Iona's NC death record which shows date of birth as 1 Jan 1907. The Social Security Death Index reflects dob as 2 Jan 1907.
1910 Census*15 April 1910 James was listed as the head of a family on the 1910 Census at Deep Creek District, Norfolk Co., Virginia.4
WWI Draft Reg*12 September 1918 James registered for the WW-I draft, naming Mary E. Culpepper as his nearest relative, on 12 September 1918 at Plymouth, Washington Co., North Carolina.1

1930 Census*1 April 1930 James was listed as the head of a family on the 1930 Census at Whiteville, Columbus Co., North Carolina.6
Death*11 March 1956 He died at Robeson Co., North Carolina, on 11 March 1956 at age 72.7
