Research note* | 2 July 2009 | From: Sharon Fowler Sent: Thursday, July 02, 2009 12:25 PM To: Lew Griffin Subject: Rebecca (Hammack) Culpepper and her Birth Date Hi Lew, Thank you so much for this information. I've seen parts of it on Warren's website, but couldn't figure out the exact sourcing. As I told Warren this morning, I do believe that Rebecca was likely the daughter of Benedict as Joel Culpepper and Benedict Hammock were listed next to each other in the 1820 census. I have occasionally come across women (especially southern ones) who started fudging about age 30 and never gave it up, so I will assumed that in this case as well. Besides, I have about a week in here and others have years invested in this family. On another note related to this family, I've been looking at all of the information that I could find online related to Joel in an effort to try to figure out which Newman was his father (too many candidates really). Anyway, I saw on Warren's website that Joel was mentioned in the will of a Sarah Ragan. I found out that Sarah was living in Pike Co., GA in 1851 when she wrote her will and that the will was probated in Harris Co. I found a blurb about it online, but it was Bev who found the transcription written on another site by the same woman. It appears that Georgia's marriage records are very incomplete, but I was able to determine the following about the people mentioned in the will of Sarah Ragan of Pike Co. (probated in Harris Co.): 1. Bryant Lee of Pike Co.- born 1789, married Sarah Davis who was born in Jones Co. in 1796 and died in Pike Co. in 1876. 2. James Green of Jones Co. - born abt 1790, had a son named Benedict H. Green born abt 1812, so he probably married a Hammack, wife Mary, born abt 1790, listed in the 1850 census (was she a Hammack?). 3. Ruthy Buckner of Talbot Co. - Rutha Ayers, born 1807, married Micajah W. Buckner abt 1825 (connected how?) 4. Mary Ann Davis of Harris Co. - Mary Ann (unk) Davis, born abt 1800, widow in 1850, married bef 1831. 5. James Ragan, husband - 1850 census for Pike Co. shows James Ragir (sic), born abt 1781 NC, Sarah Ragir (sic), born abt 1782 VA, James got his bed and some clothes, which would go to Joel Culpepper when James died. 6. Joel Culpepper to receive everything else after paying the debts and amounts to the above, born abt 1796, married Rebecca Hammack (daughter of Benedict and Sallie)in Jones Co., living in Harris Co. in 1850 In the 1820 census for Jones Co., GA are listed in order: James Green Joshua Davis Benedict Hammock William Davis Joel Culpepper From this information, I have come to the conclusion that Sarah Ragan of Pike Co. was very likely to have been the widow of Benedict Hammack (and presumed mother of Rebecca). I cannot at this point connect Rutha (Ayers) Buckner, but given that 2 of the heirs are related to the Davis family and 2 are presumed to be related to the Hammack family, and they were seemingly neighbors and probably relatives,is there any other reasonable conclusion? Benedict Hammack died in Jones Co. in 1825 and the only two James Ragan/Ragin individuals that I could find in the 1820 census were both in Jasper Co., which is adjacent to Jones Co., and they were both surrounded by Hammacks (both were also of the right age). Therefore Mrs. Sallie Hammack would have had the opportunity to have met and married the James Ragan/Ragin in question. In the information that you have available, is there anything that would disagree with this conclusion? Thank you in advance for your assistance. Sharon From: Lew Griffin To: Sharon Fowler Cc: Warren Culpepper Sent: Thursday, July 2, 2009 11:46:10 AM Subject: Rebecca (Hammack) Culpepper and her Birth Date Hi Sharon, The birth date for Rebecca Hammock comes from an article written for Harris County, Georgia And Her People by Barbara Lockard. It appeared in Volume Two, Number One, Winter 1986. Barbara Lockard was the primary researcher on the Joel Culpepper family in those years. I became acquainted with her in the 1970’s and corresponded with her until her death a few years ago. The paragraph in question reads: “Joel Culpepper was born ca.1796 in Jones County, Georgia. He married Rebecca Hammack of Jones County, on August 26, 1819. Rebecca, the daughter of Benedict Hammack, was born June 6, 1796 and was baptized into Walnut Creek Church, Jones County, in 1809. They moved to Harris County around 1830 where he had a large plantation about two miles from what is now Pine Mountain, Georgia. The exact date they came to Harris County is unclear. Her obituary says 1829, but they are still on the Jones County census in 1830. This information comes from the records of the Bethany Baptist Church and Lillian Champion.” Note that the paragraph also refers to her obituary. In June 1995, Barbara sent me a copy of her records. Her group sheets include the following on Rebecca Hammack: “Rebecca’s obituary reads that she came to Harris County in 1829. She lived to be almost 95 years old and was bedridden the last five years from injuries received in a fall. She was a consistent follower of Christ for 80 years after being baptized by the Sainted Joshua Calloway in 1809 at Walnut Creek Church in Jones County, Georgia. “Through much research and elimination, Rebecca is almost certainly the daughter of Benedict Hammack of Jones County, Georgia.” In Barbara’s ancestry charts, also from June 1995, she lists Rebecca’s date of birth as “1805” which as you say tends to agree with census records. But if you are familiar with the Baptist religion, they believed that baptism was by immersion, and should take place “at the age of reason.” So the 1809 baptism would be consistent with the 1796 birth. But I’ll let you reach your own conclusions about all of this. Regards, Lew -----Original Message----- From: Sharon Fowler [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, July 01, 2009 5:33 PM To: Warren Culpepper Subject: Rebecca (Hammack) Culpepper and her Birth Date Hi Warren, I'm just curious about something to do with the age of Rebecca Hammack. I see that there are several sources listed here, but is there solid evidence that Rebecca was born in 1796? From the 1830 census through the 1880 census, her given age is always consistent with a birth between 1801-1805 and usually on the younger end. This would mean lying by nearly 10 years on a consistent basis, so you can understand my questioning the date of birth given in 1796. Also, since she is not named in Benedict's will, is her parentage also confirmed? Thanks for your assistance in advance, Sharon .2 |

Biography* | From Nancy Pressley, October 2000: If found this interesting letter stapled to a marriage record in Conecuh County, AL. The letter is stapled to Page 190 of Marriage Book D (whites), which shows a marriage between James M. Sanders and Claude Eugean Culpepper (a female), on 19 Oct. 1904 by Rev. Walter P. Howell. The letter was written by Walter Love Howell, the son of Rev. Walter P. Howell. It is dated 21 Nov 1963, addressed to the Conecuh County Court House in Evergreen, AL, and attached to his letter are photocopies of two pages from a Bible. The letter states "The Sanders and the Culpeppers were neighbors and long time friends of my father's family. ...the marriage was performed at the home of John A. Culpepper in the Georgiaville community of Conecuh County." The letter is notarized, and is signed in what appears to be an elderly hand. A transcript of the Bible pages follows: 1.
