Research note*29 May 2007 Rufus Morgan Baker was married to Ann "Annie" Elizabeth Culpepper, sister of John Tyler Culpepper.
The Joel Culpeppers and Andrew Bakers were neighbors in TN and moved to AL at the same time. In the 1830 & 1840 census there were males & females the right ages for John Tyler, Martha Melvina, Rufus Morgan and Annie Elizabeth Culpepper.
In the 1850 census AL we found neighbor widow Elizabeth Baker, b. VA with several children, the oldest Mary, 25 also b. VA. We are sure, but have no proof, that Andrew is father of Melvina and Rufus. Also sure, but no proof that Elizabeth was the wife of Andrew. Never been able to find her maiden name, nor do we know that she was the mother of Melvina. She could be Andrew's second wife.
In 1880 census AL both Melvina and Rufus said both parents were born in VA.1

Letter/Message Text26 April 2009 I am researching the family of James and Susannah Wallen...
Mary Ann Wallen's mother Susannah was listed as living in Polk County, TN. on the 1870 Polk County, TN. Census with Mary's brother John Wallen family.2
Letter/Message Text*14 May 2011 Mary Ann Wallin and her brother John Wallin were the children of Stephen Wallin and Elizabeth Igou. John Wallin, father of Stephen, was married to Elizabeth Roberts. Mary Ann and John are both listed in the will of their mother Elizabeth Wallin, probated in 1858 in McMinn Co., TN. Polly Culpepper and her husband were purchasers at the inventory sale as was John Wallin and wife Emily. John was the admn. of the estate. John's brother James Thompson Wallin is my gg-grandfather. Hope this helps... There is much confusion out there regarding this family!3
Letter/Message Text6 September 2013  She wrote on 6 September 2013:
On 6 Sep 2013, Jennifer Barnes Mieirs wrote: "Someone said Mary Ann Wallen and her brother John were children of Stephen. That's not true. They are children of Stephen's brother James Wallen and his wife Susanna 'Susie' rumored to be Shue. She is living with John and Emily in the census in Polk county, TN. The reason they are in the will is they are still grandchildren of Elizabeth Roberts Wallen."
-------------------------------------------
On 9 Sep 2013, Jennifer provided the following detail to support her contention:

Deed Book O, McMinn Co., TN
426 6 Sep 1858 Copy of County Court Decree: James and John Wallen VS Thomas, Jessey, Isaac, and John Wallen, Sarah Igo formerly Wallen, Nancy Wallen who married David Wallen, Elizabeth McMurry formerly Wallen, James Jr., Eliza Jane, Nancy, John Jr., Matilda, and Mary Ann Wallen, heirs of Elizabeth Wallen, dec'd.

The court case states that all of the heirs of Elizabeth Wallen, except Elizabeth McMurry against whom James and John Wallen sued in 1858 were not residents of McMinn County, TN. The heirs, each receiving a ninth of the estate were James Wallen (married my ancestor Susan), John Wallen, Elizabeth McMurry, Sarah Igou, Nancy Wallen (married to cousin Daniel), Isaac Wallen, Thomas Wallen and Jesse Wallen. John Wallen named in the against part has to be an heir, and to be honest, not sure completely who he is. The James Jr, Eliza Jane, Nancy, John Jr, Matilda, and Mary Ann are all children of Stephen Wallen.

In Bradley County, TN in 1850 you will find Elizabeth Ibou Wallen with her children Matilda, Nancy, James, John and Mary Ann. Eliza Jane the other child named in the estate of Elizabeth Wallen is married and living nearby, the wife of George Kincannon. The family except James all move to Arkansas, and I found a write up on Eliza Jane that gives her parents as Stephen and Elizabeth Ibou. She is buried in Logan County, AR (nearby Scott where they are found in 1860. Nancy married James T. Smith. Mary Ann is found as a Wade in 1860 and as a Logan in 1870 with children. She is living with her brother John J. Wallen in 1860. Eliza Jane Kincannon also is living in Scott County, TN.

In 1860 Margaret Russell found in the home of Mary Ann Culpepper is the same Margaret Russell as found in the home of my ancestor Henry Rogers in 1850 in Hamilton County, TN. This in combination with John and Emily having Susan in the home in 1870 in Polk County lead me to believe by process of elimination (since I can't find estates on either James or Susan) that they are children of James and Susan.

Margaret Russell is the daughter of Henry's sister, Lucinda Rogers, who was married to Thomas R. Russell and had died by 1850. She married in 1842 James Hays in McMinn, but prior to that was involved in a case in Lee County, VA with her siblings involving the remaining 2/3 of their father's share in a Saltworks. In 1816, James Wallen and his wife Susan sold her dower rights to 1/3 of 1/8th interest in the Saltworks. Some of the records are in Scott County, VA, and I found a Chancery case giving this information from 1820 where the person who wrote a bond for the funds was suing William Roberts the man who had the deed of the Saltworks.

Susan/Susannah or Suzie is supposed to be a Shue. The source is a bible, that no one has seen (lady posted it and died). I am not really ready to say this is true or not. There is a Shuh/Shue family in Shenadoah Virginia of the right time frame. there are also Shye's in Roane/Bledsoe in 1807 when Susan would have married Joseph Rogers, the father of her eldest four children.

John Wallen is not old enough (neither of them) to have a child Mary Ann Culpepper's age. If one reviews the children of Isaac, Jesse and Thomas, Mary ann can't fit there either. Review of the Census of Mcminn, Co, Tn shows the following. Thomas Wallen's children are all accounted for and do not include Mary Ann
All of the Rogers Children were born prior to 1816.

1830 McMinn County, TN (age groups)
James Wallen, 2 sons under 5, one 5-9, male 30-39, one female 5-9, one female 30-39
