The children of Mr. and Mrs. Paris CULPEPPER honored their parents with an "Open House" and a reception at the Culpepper home in Barney on Sunday, October 27th. Over two hundred guests called between the hours of three and five o'clock to offer the former Miss Ethel CARTER and her bridegroom of fifty years, Mr. Paris Culpepper, congratulations on their Golden Wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Culpepper were married in Barney at the home of the bride's mother, Mrs. Jennie CARTER, fifty years ago on October 27, 1913. Children of the couple received with their parents. Mrs. Evelyn BOWMAN was here from Lafayette, Georgia; W. F. CULPEPPER came from Gainesville, Florida; W.H. In addition to the five children, the Culpeppers have nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Fifty years ago the announcement of the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Paris Culpepper appeared in the Quitman Free Press: "Much interest has been centered in this wedding," the reporter wrote, "as the young couple are both well known. Miss Carter, being the oldest daughter of Mrs. Jennie Carter and her charming traits of character and her winning ways, making her a great favorite, while Mr. Culpepper is the well known son of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. CULPEPPER and is a young business man of sterling qualities." "The parlor where the ceremony was performed was profusely decorated with white and pink roses and ferns. The couple entered the parlor to the soft strains of Meddelssohn's wedding march which was beautifully rendered by Miss Minnie ECHOLS. Miss Echols was gowned in pale blue chiffon over satin. The bride looked very fair and lovely wearing her traveling dress, a dark blue velvet coat suit with fur trimmings and hat to match." At the Fiftieth Anniversary of the wedding Mrs. Virginia PORTER of Daytona Beach, Florida greeted the guests as they arrived. Mrs. J.F. CARTER invited the guests to the dining room for refreshments. Yellow roses and chrysanthemums were used in arrangements in the parlor and dining room. The tiered Golden Wedding cake was decorated with golden wedding bells and yellow roses. It centered a table covered with white embroidered linen. Brass candelabra holding golden candles illuminated the cake. Miss Caroline DEAN of Decatur and Miss Dianne HOLLEMAN of Smyrna, Georgia, granddaughters of Mr. and Mrs. Paris Culpepper, presided at the cake table. Mrs. Marylin BOWMAN of Lafayette served punch assisted by Mrs. L. W. CARTER. Others helping during the afternoon were Mrs. Mae MCMILLIAN of Gainesville, Florida; Mrs. Ruth C. Burial*6 January 1924 His body was interred on 6 January 1924 at Campground Cemetery at Mount Zion Church, Morven, Brooks Co., Georgia.2,6
Obituary*11 January 1924 The funeral of J. W. CULPEPPER, who was shot on Sunday night, December 30, in Central City Park in Macon and who died late Friday afternoon in a Macon hospital, was conducted last Sunday at the Morven Campground, six mile from the young man's home in Barney. Culpepper's body left Macon Saturday morning, immediately after the coroner's inquest was held, and reached his home in Barney late Saturday afternoon. The body was accompanied home by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. CULPEPPER, sisters and brothers and other relatives who went to Macon early in the week. The funeral was very largely attended and scores of friends from all section of the county were there. Although the cororner's jury in Bibb County returned a verdict charging that the killing was murder and fixed the crime on Robert HILL, the negro identified by the young woman in the case, the relatives of Culpepper are by no means satisfied that the negro actually did the killing. In their theory, it is point out that negroes do not commit crimes in the manner described by the young woman and there are some who think there is much more in the tragedy than has been brought to light by the official investigation. Culpepper, who was 21 years old the day after his bleeding body was found in the deserted park, came home during the Christmas holidays and is said to have told some of his friends that the young woman in the tragedy was very much in love with him and that he had determined not to see her again after he returned to Macon, where he was working for the Central Railroad and where the young woman was visiting friends. Immediately upon his return, however, the two drove out to the park, where the shooting took place, where the woman claims she was criminally assaulted and where Culpepper, in his moments of consciousness, say he was afterwards robbed by the negro, presumably by the one who committed the other two crimes. It is probable the investigation will be continued.6
