Joseph Culpepper of Norfolk Co., VA
M, (circa 1751 - circa 1796)
Father | Robert Culpepper Jr. of Lower Norfolk Co., VA (s 1694 - b Oct 1774) |
Mother | Dorcas (?) (s 1700 - ) |
Birth* | circa 1751 | Joseph was born at Norfolk Co., Virginia, circa 1751. |
Tithable* | 10 June 1767 | He was included in a list of Tithables taken on 10 June 1767 at Southside of Western Branch, Norfolk Co., Virginia.1 |
Tithable* | 10 June 1768 | He and Benjamin Culpepper were included in a list of Tithables taken on 10 June 1768 at Southside of Western Branch, Norfolk Co., Virginia.1 |
Tithable | 10 June 1769 | He and Benjamin Culpepper were included in a list of Tithables taken on 10 June 1769 at West side of Western Branch, Portsmouth Parish, Norfolk Co., Virginia.1 |
Tithable | 10 June 1770 | He was included in a list of Tithables taken on 10 June 1770 at Southside of Western Branch, Norfolk Co., Virginia.1 |
Tithable | 10 June 1771 | He was included in a list of Tithables taken on 10 June 1771 at Western Branch District, Norfolk Co., Virginia.1 |
(Additional Name) Tithable | 15 June 1780 | He listed in Tithables taken on 15 June 1780 at Southside of Western Branch, Norfolk Co., Virginia, "From Portsmouth to Hall's Mill... John Culpepper, Joseph Culpepper, and Benjamin Culpepper," (three households), each with one tithe. Benjamin was now about 28 years old, and this is the last reference to him in Norfolk Tithe records.1 |
Research note | Joseph Culpepper of Norfolk Co., VA seems to be one of the most likely candidates to have been the father of brothers Lemuel and Stephen Culpepper. In any case, the names Lemuel and Stephen must have come from his wife's side of the family, since they were not Culpepper family names. And his wife must have been from one of the nearby families living on the Western Branch of the Elizabeth River. Stephen and Lemuel were both family names in the Hodges family, for instance. Stephen Makins took the inventory of Joseph's estate and may have been his brother-in-law. The name Lemuel was used in the early Bruce, Etheridge, Portlock, Veale, and Willoughby families, just to mention a few. Wills in these and other early Norfolk families should be checked, to see if the name of Joseph's wife can be determined. Her father might possibly have left a bequest to his grandsons Lemuel and Stephen in his will. DNA test results of descendants of Lemuel and Stephen also indicate that they descend from Robert Culpepper Jr. of Lower Norfolk Co., VA, the father of Joseph.2,3
Census* | 1782 | A census listed Joseph as head of household at Norfolk Co., Virginia, in 1782.4 |
Tax List* | 1782 | He was listed in a tax list at Portsmouth Parish, Norfolk Co., Virginia, in 1782.5 |
Marriage* | 23 June 1792 | He married Frances Owens at Norfolk Co., Virginia, on 23 June 1792. John Taylor, surety.6 |
(surety) Marriage | 6 December 1793 | He was the surety in the marriage of Sophia Culpepper to David Culpepper of Norfolk Co., VA at Norfolk Co., Virginia, on 6 December 1793, affirming that there was no moral or legal reason why the couple could not be married; David and Sophia were first cousins, with each being a grandchild of Robert Culpepper, Jr. and Dorcas.7 |
Death* | circa 1796 | He died at Norfolk Co., Virginia, circa 1796.8 |
Probate* | 2 March 1799 | Probate action was taken on Joseph's estate, with Zachariah Owens appraising on 2 March 1799 at Norfolk Co., Virginia, Joseph must have died intestate before March 1799, as an inventory of his estate was made that year in Norfolk County. Zachariah Owens, Zachariah Nichols, and Stephen Makins were appraisers of Joseph's estate. He would have been about 47 years old.9 |
(Previous Owner) Deed | 2 April 1799 | He was a previous owner in the deed granted to Sophia Culpepper, Robert Culpepper of Portsmouth, VA and David Culpepper of Norfolk Co., VA on 2 April 1799 2 Apr 1799 -- Deed Bk 37, p 220. Martha Mackie, executrix of Andrew Mackie of Isle of Wight Co, VA, to Robert (Rachel?) Culpepper, David Culpepper, and Sophia his wife, and Joseph Etheridge, Moses Etheridge, and Sarah Etheridge, who are infants of Norfolk Co. Whereas Joseph Culpepper of Norfolk Co purchased in his lifetime from Martha Mackie a tract of land for £40 but before a deed was made he died leaving 2 children, the aforesaid Robert (Rachel?) and Sophia Culpepper, wife of David Culpepper, and 3 grandchildren, the 3 Etheridges mentioned. So Mackie deeds a tract of land between Portsmouth and Suffolk to these heirs, 16 acres. Wit: Andrew Kidd, Benjamin Culpepper, Nicholas Jordan, Joseph Kinder.10 |

Henry Culpepper III, of Norfolk Co., VA
M, (say 1699 - between 1733 and 1750)
Father | Henry Culpepper Jr. of Norfolk Co., VA (s 1669 - 1699) |
Mother | Mary Richardson (s 1675 - a 1724) |
DNA* | Henry has been proven by DNA and genealogical research to be a descendant of Henry Culpepper of Lower Norfolk, VA, the American Culpepper progenitor.
Name-AltSpell | This surname is sometimes spelled Culpeper.
(1) Will | 25 July 1698 | He is most likely "the child my wife goes with" mentioned in the will of his father, Henry Culpepper Jr. of Norfolk Co., VA at Norfolk Co., Virginia, on 25 July 1698.1 |
Birth* | say 1699 | Henry was born at Norfolk Co., Virginia, say 1699. |
(1) Will | 4 January 1709 | He was only nine years old, and so was not the Henry Culpeper whose land was mentioned in the will of John Creekmore at Norfolk Co., Virginia, on 4 January 1709. That Henry was his deceased father, Henry, Jr., to whom Creekmore sold land in 1798. Deed Bk 9, p 80. Will of John Creekmore dated 4 Jan 1708/9 and proved 17 Aug 1711 by Emanuel Burgis. Various bequests including: "Unto my son John Creekmur Jr 50 acres of land lying between Richard Hodges and Henry Culpepper called by name of Horse Point...." Note that deeds often mentioned deceased individuals as adjacent land owners, as the description of the land was just copied from earlier records. Henry, Jr., had willed his Creekmore land to his son Thomas Culpepper, and Thomas was only about 13 or 14 years old at the time of John Creekmore's death and this reference to Henry's land in Creekmore's will. |
(Witness) Will | 10 November 1716 | He witnessed the signing of the will of Thomas Richardson, his grandfather, on 10 November 1716 at Norfolk Co., Virginia. Although age 17 may seem like a young age for someone to be witnessing a will, there are other proven cases of men this young witnessing deeds and wills. It is important to note not only that Henry III signed with a mark, but also, that his mark was distinct from that of his father, Henry, Jr., and his grandfather, Henry. This mark is a block lettered "HC." The marks with which they signed documents helps distinguish the three early Henrys from each other.2 |
(Prover) Probate | 29 March 1719 | He authenticated the validity of the will of Thomas Richardson. On 29 March 1719 at Norfolk Co., Virginia. |
Deed* | 18 December 1719 | He was granted a deed on 18 December 1719 at Norfolk Co., Virginia, 18 Dec 1719 -- Deed Bk 10, p 86. Order is granted Henry Culpepper for the sum of twenty shillings against the estate of Richard and Sarah Wright, etc. |

(Grantee) Deed | 24 February 1724 | He was granted a deed by Thomas Culpepper of Norfolk Co., VA and Ann Culpepper on 24 February 1724 at Norfolk Co., Virginia, 24 Feb 1724 -- Deed Bk F, p 132. Thomas Culpepper, cooper, and Ann his wife, to Henry Culpepper, cooper, for £25, 100 acres of the South side of Deep Creek, South Branch of the Elizabeth River. Tithable | 10 June 1732 | He and Robert Culpepper Jr. of Lower Norfolk Co., VA were included in a list of Tithables taken on 10 June 1732 at Western Branch of the Elizabeth River, Norfolk Co., Virginia, "Robert Culpepper Jr., one tithe, and Henry Culpepper, one tithe."3 |
Tithable | 11 June 1733 | He and Robert Culpepper Jr. of Lower Norfolk Co., VA were included in a list of Tithables taken on 11 June 1733 at Western Branch of the Elizabeth River, Norfolk Co., Virginia, "By Thomas Scott: Robert Culpepper Jr., one tithe, and Henry Culpepper, one tithe."3 |
Biography* | He appears adjacent to his first cousin Robert Culpepper Jr. of Lower Norfolk Co., VA in the Western Branch Pct. tithables for 1730-1733 and disappears from records thereafter. No estate or probate record for him as been found. Mary J. Culpepper, thought to be his widow, shows up in the next available Norfolk Tithable records in 1750, connected to Henry Culpepper IV of Currituck Co. NC and Jeremiah Culpepper of Norfolk Co., VA, presumably their sons.
Death* | between 1733 and 1750 | He died at Norfolk Co., Virginia, after his listing on the tithable list on 11 Jun 1733 and before his wife (Mary) and son (Herny IV) were listed on the tithables on 10 Jun 1750.3 |
(Previous Landowner) Deed | 1 December 1763 | He was a previous land owner in a deed granted by Henry Culpepper IV of Currituck Co. NC and Christian Culpepper on 1 December 1763 Deed Bk 22, p 27. Mother | Elizabeth Horne (b 1655 - ) |
Birth* | say 1675 | Mary was born say 1675. |
Marriage* | say 1696 | She married Henry Culpepper Jr. of Norfolk Co., VA at Norfolk Co., Virginia, say 1696. |
Married Name | say 1696 | As of say 1696, her married name was Culpepper. |
Will | 25 July 1698 | Mary named as executor(s) in the will of Henry Culpepper Jr. of Norfolk Co., VA at Norfolk Co., Virginia, on 25 July 1698.1 |
Death* | after 1724 | She died at Norfolk Co., Virginia, after 1724. |
Biography* | Evidence that Henry Culpepper's wife was named Mary is based on two sources. One is the will of Henry's father-in-law, Thomas Richardson, which mentions several daughters including one named Mary: "unto my five daughters Marey Frances Margarett Ruith and Sarah one Shilling a peace and to ye heirs of my daughter Elizabeth one Shilling." (Norfolk Wills, proven March 1718/19). This shows that Thomas Richardson had a daughter named Mary. The second source is a deed transcript found in the book "Derivation of the Herbert Family," by Alice G. Walter. This deed transcript, dated 1699, of Willoughby to Herbert, is witnessed by William Maund and Mary (her "M" mark) Culpepper. At this early date, the only Mary Culpepper who would have been living in Norfolk County would have been Mary Richardson, wife of Henry Culpepper. That she was a Richardson is proven by Henry's 1699 will. The following deed shows that Mary was still living as late as 1724: 24 Feb 1724 -- Deed Bk F, p 132. Thomas Culpepper, cooper, and Ann his wife, to Henry Culpepper, cooper, for £25, 100 acres of the South side of Deep Creek, South Branch of the Elizabeth River. "Only my mother's thirds her lifetime." Wit: Faithful Cherry, Ruth Cherry, Ruth Suggs. Signed: Thomas Culpepper, Ann Culpepper. |
