G'day again Warren,
....
As we've both worked out well and truly by now, the early Newington/Culpepper pedigrees submitted to Ancestral File and the Pedigree Resource File are highly dubious. They do not include specific dates or places, which they should do if they were properly researched, and they may have been extracted from a secondary source rather than original records. It would seem that in the past anyone could submit just about anything to conjure up a pedigree and links to genuine families or individuals.

Regarding Alice and her mention in the wills, it is possible that her husband Sir Adam Newington had died before the wills were written and for some reason she retained, at least in her father's eyes, the name of Culpeper.
All that said, I can find no support in my records for the marriage of this Alice Culpeper (daughter of Alexander and Agnes) to Sir Adam Newington. Nor can I find any support for the dates we have associated with Sir Adam.

Hello Warren,

I hope we may be able to help each other with what may be an erroneous connection on the Culpepper tree (URL http://gen.culpepper.com/ss/p8576.htm )

I don't have access to the original records from home, so I've been comparing the information on your site with the somewhat dubious accuracy of submitted pedigrees/connections in FamilySearch's Ancestral File and Pedigree Resource File. Somehow or other, between the various sources, the records relating to Alice CULPEPPER/COLEPEPPER and Adam NEWINGTON seem to be two or three generations out of whack.

Your page says Alice, born circa 1491, was the daughter of Sir Alexander CULPEPPER and his first wife, Agnes DAVEY.

Alexander's Will of May, 1540, clearly indicates Alice had not married by then, as does that of his widow, Constance, of 4 October 1541.

However, your page also says Alice had married around 1509, to Adam NEWINGTON, Knight, so there seems to be some discrepancy there.

The records from the FamilySearch site indicate that Adam NEWINGTON, Knight, was born circa 1459 and married an Alice COLEPEPPER of Salehurst, Sussex, circa 1483. [See https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.2.1/MW1R-WKD ]. Alexander's Alice would by then have been 92, and even if she was still alive then, could not possibly have been the mother of any child to Adam NEWINGTON.

Alice and Adam are said in the above record to have had a son, Thomas, born circa 1484 and "of Salehurst".

Thomas NEWINGTON, born circa 1484, married Jone/Johane CHEYNEY, born circa 1486 of Cralle Manor, Warbleton, Sussex, circa 1518.

Their son, Thomas, born circa 1519, of Salehurst, Sussex, married Anne DAWTREY circa 1546.

The line continues down to a Joseph NEWINGTON, born 1707, who married a Mary TOMPSETT in 1729 in Ticehurst, Sussex. Joseph had an affair with Mary FEVER nee TYHURST, the widow of Thomas FEVER, in mid-late 1742, which resulted in the birth of a son, William FEVER, who was baptised in June, 1743. [See A2A - Sussex Record Office - Bastardy bond PAR492/34/3/9 25 Jul 1747, former reference: PAR492/34/3/9 "Joseph NEWINGTON of Ticehurst, gent; a bastard son of Mary FEVER of Ticehurst, widow; Witnesses: Daniel WATSON, James MUNN.”].

I'm connected to Mary's late husband, by way of his brother and my (almost certainly) 7 x great grandfather, John FEVER, baptised 15 Dec 1689 in Wadhurst, Sussex. I've been conducting a thorough study of the FEAVER/FEVER families of Kent and Sussex for many years now, and have only today been able to prove that young William FEVER, Joseph NEWINGTON's son, lived in Brenchley, Tudeley and Capel and Kent in the mid/late 1700s, with a brief return in September, 1767 to Sussex. [See A2A - East Sussex County Record Office, reference Quarter Sessions order PAR498/32/2/80 8 Oct 1767 (Former reference: PAR498/32/2/80) - "confirming removal order for William Feaver of Brenchley in Kent with wife Sarah and son Thomas (15 weeks)". The record is held in the East Sussex Record Office, but the summary doesn't state from which parish William was being removed, nor specify if William was being ordered back to Brenchley from Sussex, or from Brenchley back to Sussex, so this needs to be clarified.]

I am also descended from John CALLOW(E) who was the vicar of Ticehurst from circa 1664/64 until his death in 1680. A nice co-incidence, but not especially relevant to the CULPEPPER site, unless you can surprise me in that respect?

Can you possibly help me establish which Alice COLEPEPPER/CULPEPPER married Sir Adam NEWINGTON, and whether or not the early generations of that pedigree are factual?

Looking forward to hearing from you, and hoping we can be of help to one another,

Heather Johnson (Miss)
