Death*before 15 May 1630 He died before 15 May 1630.
Biography* Edward Culpeper was the only son of 'I'homas Culpeper. of Wakehurst, by Philippa Thatcher, his wife. Edward was born in or about 1561, married at Steyning, 21 Jun 1584, Elizabeth, daughter of William Farnefold of Nash in Steyning, was knighted at the accession of James I, 23 Jul 1603, and was a Sergeant at Law; he was buried at Ardingly, 9 Apr 1630, as "Sir Edward Culpeper, an ancient knight," and on 15 May 1630, administration (Lewes, B.6,58) of his estate was granted (Lady Elizabeth Culpeper having renounced) to William Culpeper, Baronet, the natural, lawful and eldest son, who is bound together with Henrv Faulconer of West Hoathly, in £2000. The Inventory amounted to £410/2s/0d. Sir Edward Culpeper was the builder of Wakehurst Place1 in 1590, and greatly enlarged his property there, and in 1613 bought of Edward Neville, Lord Bergavenny, for £1,700, all that park or enclosed ground called Strudgate Park, alias Strudgate Walk, alias Reder's Walk, now part of Worth Forest (Close Roll, 11 Jas. I, pt. 39). See also Pat. Roll 12 James I, pt. 33, No. 65, where leave is granted to Sir Edward Culpeper to purchase from Edward Neville, Lord Bergavenny and others six messuages , six cottages, two water mills, 12 gardens, 400 acres of land, 40 acres of meadow, 300 acres of pasture, 300 acres of wood, 40 acres of marsh and 500 acres of furze and heath in Worth, West Hoadley, Ardingly and Balcombe.

In the same Rolls (Pat. Roll, 2 Jas. I, pt. 20), leave was granted to Johanna Culpeper, widow, to convey two houses, 100 acres of land, 20 of meadow, 60 of pasture, 60 of wood and 100 of furze and heath in Balcombe to Sir John Morgan and James Thatcher, to he held by them to the use of Johanna Culpeper (Joane Culpeper) for her life, with remainder to the use of Sir Edward Culpeper and his heirs for ever. This looks as if Sir Edward Culpeper lost his case for immediate possession of Naylands, but only came into it after his aunt's death. In 1621, he sold it to Robert Spence, of Lincoln's Inn, gent. (Robert Spence), for £1,225. (Close Roll, 18 Jas. I, pt.)

At the Inq. P.M., taken at East Grinstead, 6 Oct 1630 (Inq. P.M., 6 Chas. I, pt. 1, No. 80), Sir Edward Culpeper was found to be seized of the following property: The Manor of Wakehurst, and the advowson of the Parish Church of Ardingly. A water mill called Wakehurst mill occupied by George Gatland. A parcel of land occupied by Andrew Jordan. A house in Ardingly occupied by William Brooker. A parcel of land called Faulkeners in Ardingly occupied by Edward Culpeper. Strudgate Park lately disparked in Ardingly, West Hoathly, Worth and Balcombe. Wakehurst Park.

Rev. William Culpeper of England and Barbados

M, (before 23 December 1605 - 1674)
FatherCanon Edmund Culpeper of Lincoln (c 1544 - a 1605)
MotherMarye (?) of Berkshire, England (s 1580 - )
DNA* From DNA and genealogical evidence we conclude that Rev. William Culpeper of England and Barbados is a member of the International branch whose most recent common ancestor is either William Culpeper of Hunton and Wigsell, or the Rev. William Culpeper of Barbados.
Name-AltSpell This surname is sometimes spelled Colepeper.
Name-AltSpell This surname is sometimes spelled Culpepper.
Baptism23 December 1605 He was baptized at Sunningwell, Berkshire, England, on 23 December 1605.1
Birth*before 23 December 1605 William was born at Berkshire, England, before 23 December 1605.
Marriage*30 April 1633 He married Margaret Alleyne of England and Barbados at Stowting, co. Kent, England, on 30 April 1633.
(8) Will30 January 1644 He is mentioned in the will of Sir Alexander Culpeper of Greenway Court, Knight on 30 January 1644.2,3
(Heir) Will21 April 1650 Christian, Anne, Reynold, Margaret, Abel, William and Alleyne named as heir(s) in the will of Rev. Richard Alleyne of Stowting D.D. at London, England, on 21 April 1650.4
Death*1674 He died at Barbados in 1674.
Biography* [From an e-mail message to Warren Culpepper from Lew Griffin, 22 Jun 1998]: Fairfax Harrison thought the line probably went back to Edmund (1547-post 1605)... (See Edmund's biography for Harrison's comments.)
This William was the one who married Margaret Allen or Alleyne, and was the father of John Alleyne Culpepper of Barbados, the one (who some think) is one and the same as John of Albemarle.
The only source I have on this family is "Genealogies of Barbados Families" and that only gives a sketchy account of William's children as part of an extensive article on the Alleyne family. It suggests that William had the following children (no proof offered): Abel, Alleyne, John Alleyne, Francis, and Margaret.
So my first question would be, were there really two different sons, one named Alleyne, and the other, John Alleyne ? Can these two men (if there really were two) be distinguished in Barbados records? Does this John Alleyne Culpepper disappear from Barbados records at the same time that "John the Rebel" showed up in Charleston, SC, or in Albemarle? If for instance, he was still merrily engaged in land transactions in Barbados while John the Rebel was known to have been in NC, then that would be worth knowing, and would prove that they were two different men. Also, if there is no evidence in Barbados of TWO brothers, one John Alleyne and the other just Alleyne, that would be worth knowing. Because of the unusual naming pattern, I have my doubts about their being two men, I think it is possible that John Alleyne just went by the "Alleyne" and dropped the John. So I would need to see more evidence than I currently have on this before just assuming that John the Rebel was John Alleyne. If he were John Alleyne, then why didn't he use the Alleyne or initial "A" in any records found so far in NC? Also, which of these sons of William is the ancestor of Culpeppers who still live in the West Indies?
Crest of the Barbados Culpepers reads: J'espere
