Funeral services for Elmer F. Culpepper, 82, were conducted Thursday, March 1, 1973 at the Evangelist Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan, of which he was a member. Rev. Willard Nance, pastor, officiated.
     Mr. Culpepper, a native of Houston County, was retired from Norwalk Truck Lines in Detroit. He was the son of the late Lewis and Maggie (Martin) Culpepper.
     Survivors include his wife, Effie Taylor Culpepper, Detroit; two sons, Herman of Detroit and J.T. of Granite City, IL; five daughters, Mrs. Beathe Parker, Mrs. Louise Hamilton, Mrs. Betty Geralds, Mrs. Jane Hoover, all of Detroit, and Mrs. Alice Riley, St. Louis, MO; 30 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren.
     Grandsons served as pallbearers.²

His father died before 1900, and his mother, before 1910. He married Tillah Ford after 1910 and settled with her family in Calvert City, Marshall Co., KY. In 1920, "J. W." and "Tilla" were in the 1920 census in Marshall County, KY, with newly born son Dalton, aged two months. In the mid 1920's, they moved to Detroit, MI.

Jacob Wright enlisted as a Private in Company "K", 23rd Regiment, Alabama Volunteers, August 1861, at Lower Peachtree, Alabama. Jacob, along with the rest of the 23rd Regiment, was captured at Vicksburg, Mississippi. Wounded, shot in the left elbow during battle of Missionary Ridge, Tennessee, November 23, 1863. Spent June through August 1864 at Marshall Hospital, Columbus, Ga.
Jacob Wright was denied a pension due to the fact he owned too much land -- listed in one application as being 1200 acres, mostly woodlands. g.
