Biography* Judith Richbourg Jolly on 24 June 1999 wrote the following:
Virginia Louise "Jennie" RIVIERE was born ca 1852 (1860 Census). Her parents, Jacob A. Hampton REVERE and Elizabeth ABBOTT were married 26 July 1837 in Warren County, Georgia. Warren County was most likely the place of Jennie's birth.
Her paternal lineage has not yet been researched. Her mother's parents were Rev. William ABBOTT, Jr., a hardshell Baptist minister, and Penelope NEWSOME. They married on 9 August 1811.
Rev. William ABBOTT's father was William ABBOTT, who is buried in the, ABBOTT Cemetery near Warrenton. "A maker of buckskin pants" is engraved on his marker.
Jennie grew up with several brothers and sisters. Her sisters, Cornelia, Ann, and Elizabeth, were older than she, and her brother, John, was younger. It is probable, but not confirmed at this date , that ,she also had an older brother, W. J. L. RIVIERE.
Her father, also known as Jacob A. H. RIVIERE, died between 1854 (the date of John's birth) and 1859. Jennie's mother, Elizabeth ABBOTT RIVIERE married William BAILEY on 3 November 1859.
That same year Jennie's maternal grandparents also died. Elizabeth ABBOTT RIVIERE's father died 13 March, and her mother died 19 July, 1859. In 1860 the BAILEY family is enumerated in the Warrenton District of Warren County. Virginia is age 8.
In 1865, at age 13, she wrote in pencil a note identifying her cousin Sophrunia, whose photo was in a daguerreotype that we inherited from Jennie's daughter, Fannie Leila CULPEPPER JOLLY. She placed the note behind the glass, where it remained hidden for over 100 years.
In October, 1874 she married Alexander Hamilton CULPEPPER, son of Sampson Rose CULPEPPER and Sarah Ann HALL. They married in Warren County and were the parents of four children; Fannie Leila, Keff S., Robert, and Irma. They moved to Atlanta where Alexander Hamilton CULPEPPER studied medicine at the Atlanta Medical College.
The 13 September 1884 edition of the Atlanta Constitution printed that "Jennie L. CULPEPPER, wife of A. H. CULPEPPER, died on 12 September 1884 at 9:30 at her home on Simpson Street." Funeral services were held on 14 September at the Third Presbyterian Church in Atlanta at 10:00.
She was buried in Lot 2 of Block 305, Section 21 of the Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta. Her three young nephews, sons of James T. CARTER and Emma CARTER (one of Jennie's sisters), had predeceased Jennie and
were buried in that same lot. Her sister, Emma, would be buried there in 1898.
Alexander Hamilton CULPEPPER remarried in 1886. His second wife died in 1916, and he married a third time in 1918. He died 12 October 1926 in Homerville, Clinch County, Georgia.2

Fannie Lela (Culpepper) Jolly
Death*29 June 1967 She died at Clarkston, DeKalb Co., Georgia, on 29 June 1967 at age 92.1
Biography* The writer and origin of the following text is unknown. It was found in family papers in the 1980's and furnished by Judy and Lawson Jolly to Warren Culpepper for publication at Culpepper Connections! in October 2003:

Mrs. Tom Jolly was born May 1876 and died June 1967, leaving a heritage of 91 years of dedicated service to others.

As Fannie Culpepper she was born in May of 1876 near the town of Warrenton in Warren County, Georgia.

Her father was a member of the state legislation and the family moved to Atlanta where she graduated from Girls High School.

After completing her formal education, she moved to Nickajack, Georgia, near Austell, to teach in an elementary school for three years. She then moved to the Clarkston area to live with a Carter family. This family was much impressed with her background and qualifications and availed themselves of her services to live in their home and tutor the children in the household.

Fannie Culpepper enjoyed her years in the Clarkston community. She like the homey attitude of the people. She became very active in church and community programs. She made her presence felt by her accomplishments.

Miss Fannie, as everyone called her, met and married Mr. Tom Jolly, whose family operated a grocery store in Clarkston for three generations. They were married in 1901 and lived together until his death in 1956. They were so fortunate to have been able to celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary.

The first Campfire Girls organization in the State of Georgia was organized by Mrs. Jolly. She also organized and met with a group of local young children who were aptly named The Bluebirds. They received many hours of instruction during their nature walks while Mrs. Jolly spoke to them of the history of Georgia.

At the age of 72, Mrs. Jolly received her Girl Scout Leader's Badge. How joyous she was of this accomplishment. So again, at this age, she undertook to train young girls in active community work.

The Clarkston community was fortunate to have someone of Mrs. Jolly's ilk in their midst--she was a doer. She was a gentle person, soft-spoken and kind. One was not in her presence long, however, before one realized that she had an iron will where education was concerned. Her eyes would snap and she literally breathed fire when any plans for improving education were at a stalemate. Action was her byword--if it wasn't forthcoming quickly she organized groups to get the ball rolling again. To reach an impasse was unthinkable -- action is what she wanted -- and action is what she got.

Mrs. Jolly helped to organize the first Clarkston Parent-Teacher Association. She was named first president in 1920 and served in this capacity until 1927. Mrs. Jolly and her co-workers persevered in their idea to have a high school in the Clarkston area, and finally DeKalb County agreed to permit the Clarkston area to create its own school district. They were also given the authority to issue bonds.

A Mr. Eright, Mr. Bryan, Mr. Jackson, Mr. McLendon, and Mrs. Jolly forded the committee that solicited the community's assistance in raising the money for the proposed high school; these same five people then purchased the land on which-the school would be built. A total of $25,000 was raised in the community; $18,000 was allocated for the construction of the building and $1,000 was used for equipment and supplies, including a chemistry laboratory.

This building is still standing and now houses many of the facilities of the DeKalb County Board of Education at 3703 College Avenue in Clarkston.

During a financial crisis when DeKalb County declared bankruptcy in 1925, Mrs. Jolly and her PTA workers raised $278.25 to pay the teachers' salaries for a month.

Progress is measured in terms of development and accomplishment. Only the highlights in the life of this remarkable woman ore given here.

Mrs. Jolly instilled in the minds of the children she taught, the desire to learn and to teach. Teaching others, she felt was not enough. It was necessary, she believed, to import knowledge in such a glowing manner that the recipient would in turn wish to teach others. This desire was so strongly taught by Mrs. Jolly that it will pass from one generation to another.

She taught others to strive for a feeling of pride in achievement. She constantly sought to ever work toward what might have seemed en impossible goal. Her philosophy seemed to be simply--Try and you will find a way.

She often quoted lines by James J. Metcalfe, particularly: YOU HAVE TO ACT

Ambition is a noble thing--if you are aiming high
But action is your only way--to penetrate the sky.
You cannot sit around and dream---with all your fierce desire.
You have to gather logs and strike--the match that starts the fire.
You have to fan the flames until---they blend into a bless.
You hove to keep campaigning through---the weary nights and days.
There must be every effort end---that unrelenting action,
Before ambition can achieve---a worthy satisfaction
Regardless of your stature as---a giant or an elf
If you would move the world, then first---You have to move yourself.

Mrs. Jolly's philosophy has been passed on to her children, grandchildren, and great-grand-children and to all' whom she taught in one way or another. She was an avid student of Georgia history and never lost an opportunity to extol the wonders of her state.

Robert Alexander Culpepper1

M, (21 August 1884 - 9 May 1969)
FatherAlexander Hamilton Stephens Culpepper M.D. (1 Apr 1852 - 12 Oct 1926)
MotherVirginia Louise Riviere (Oct 1852 - 12 Sep 1884)
Birth*21 August 1884 Robert was born at Atlanta, Fulton Co., Georgia, on 21 August 1884.2
Marriage*say 1908 He married Louise Lacy at Arkansas say 1908.3
1920 Census1920 Robert was listed as the head of a family on the 1920 Census at Pine Bluff, Jefferson Co., Arkansas.4
Residence*October 1926 Robert resided at Hot Springs, Garland Co., Arkansas, in October 1926.5
1930 Census*1 April 1930 Robert was listed as the head of a family on the 1930 Census at Little Rock, Pulaski Co., Arkansas.3
Death*9 May 1969 He died at North Little Rock, Pulaski Co., Arkansas, on 9 May 1969 at age 84.2,1
Biography* From Judy (Mrs. Lawson E.) Jolly:
Robert A. Culpepper was the last child born to Dr. AHS and Jennie Riviere Culpepper. Robert was born August 21, 1884, per a notation in the Bible of Keff Smith Culpepper, his older brother. Their mother died September 12, 1884, and I do not know who cared for Robert. Robert and Louise, his wife, moved to Arkansas by 1909 (both their children, Virginia and
Robert, were born there). In 1920 the family lived in Pine Bluff, Jefferson Co., AR (pg 12B), and in 1930 the family lived in Little Rock, Pulaski Co., AR (pg 209B).
The death certificate [reports] a 9 May 1969 death of Robert Alexander Culpepper, a resident of North Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas. Burial was 12 May 1969 at Roselawn Memorial Park in Little Rock. The place of birth was
Atlanta, Georgia, and the date was 21 Aug 1884. The informant was R.A. Culpepper, III (identity unknown to me at present), and he did not give the names of Robert Alexander Culpepper's parents. However, the date of birth is identical to that recorded in Keff Culpepper's Bible, and the other evidence fully supports that Robert Alexander was the s/o Dr. AHS Culpepper and Jennie Riviere.

From Louis Reitzammer, Jackson, TN, Sep 2000:
I've looked for references to Bob in my Desha County resources, and found only two. One was in a letter from a former resident of Arkansas City, saying he remember Bob Culpepper as the star pitcher for the local baseball team. The other was in connection with a Dumas, Arkansas, town council meeting when, in 1911, R. A. Culpepper moved passage of Ordinance 16, which "proclaimed all seed houses south of the north line of Jones Street to Choctaw Avenue be condemned as a public nuisance as to health and public welfare."6,7

Biography* Edwin Irving wrote on 21 Jun 2010: "My mother was a nurse. A doctor my Mother worked with wanted to send her to Medical School but for whatever reason she declined. Not sure what stage of her life this was.

Also, she was married to (Everette?) Brown and had my older sister Charlotte Joyce Brown Irving Pace. He died before she was born so she never knew her biological father and never claimed him to be her father.

My Mother later married my Father Emile Macret Irving, a pharmacist. I believe they met at Charity Hospital in New Orleans.

They had a set of triplets and two sets of twins. All died but me and my twin sister, Mildred Allain Irving Migliore. Joyce was always our older sister and she and my sister and I never knew of her biological father until she joined the Air Force at age 18 where she later married Capt. James Pace. Both Joyce and Jim are deceased.7
