In the 1850 census, she is said to be 30 years old (born c 1820). In 1870, she was 60 (born c 1810), and in 1880 she was 75 (born c 1805).The average of those three birth years is 1812. However, in 1820, apparently she was between ages 10 and 16, and thus born no later than 1810.^1,2,3

     "I can give you more information about Jeanette Llewellyn Dyes who was married to Thomas T. Culpepper 4 April 1840. They were my great-great aunt & uncle. Her parents were Nathaniel Dyes (b abt 1755) & Mary Ann Copeland Clark. They were probably also married in Gilmerton, Portsmouth, VA since Nathaniel's parents: Peter Dyes & Margaret Manning Llewellyn were on 27 Aug 1754.
     "There may be more connections because Margaret was also married & widowed by Edward Llewellyn. The Edward Llewellyn on your website was married to Margaret Ballentine. Someone else left a will and the names '---- Manning & ----Ballentine' were right next to each other...I just don't remember the names right off.
     "BTW, Jeanette Dyes Culpepper's brother-in-law, my great-great-grandfather, was a lightkeeper at Old Cape Henry. His son-in-law, Jonathan Martin, my great-grandfather was the lightkeeper at both Lamberts Point & Craney Island Lights which were both on the Elizabeth River. Therefore, Jonathan Martin would have been Jeanette's niece's husband."¹

Lemuel's ancestry has long been uncertain, although he clearly descedns from Henry Culpepper of Lower Norfolk Co., VA, the American Culpepper progenitor. Our theory over time has become more refined as the most likely, but not certain interpetation of the DNA suggests he is a descendant of the branch of Robert Culpepper, Jr. of Lower Norfolk Co., VA. Of Robert Jr's sons, Joseph is the most likely to be his father, although Sampson and Daniel are also a possibility. DNA rules out the possibility of his father being William or James.²
