Obituary* | 21 November 1997 | Margaret Culpepper Todd, 97, of the 2200 block of Cedar Road went to be with her Lord and Savior Thursday, Nov. 20, 1997. Mrs. Todd was born in Old Norfolk County and was the daughter of the late Joseph Newton and Margaret Parkerson Culpepper. She was predeceased by her first husband, Clyde E. Curling, who died in 1929, and by her second husband, William D. Todd Jr., who died in 1981, and by her 11 siblings. She was also predeceased by her daughter Margaret C. Floyd and her son-in-law, Albert O. Floyd. Mrs. Todd felt ``called by God'' to be a teacher, and after graduating from Deep Creek High School, she attended the University of Virginia, earning her teaching certificate in 1918. She began her teaching career at Sunray in a two-room schoolhouse serving as teacher and principal. During a break from teaching in 1940, she and her second husband opened Todd's Barbeque. She returned to teaching in the 1950's and retired in 1968. After her retirement, Mrs. Todd continued to serve as a substitute teacher for 20 years and home-tutored many children. As a dedicated educator, Mrs. Todd can be credited with teaching several generations of families in the Deep Creek community. She was a member of the National and Virginia Retired Teachers Association. Sister Margaret Todd had been a pillar of faith at Bethel Assembly of God for 74 years, having taught the Senior Adult Sunday School Class for the past 56 years. She also served as Elder. Her commitment to God was evidenced in her dependable lifestyle, faithfulness to her church and the love of God's Word. Survivors include a son, William D. (Billy) Todd III, and his wife, Connie, of Chesapeake; a sister-in-law, Beulah T. Culpepper of Chesapeake; five grandchildren, Bert Floyd of Atlanta, Ga., Meg Wolfred of Virginia Beach, Delk Todd of Charlotte, N.C., Esther Todd of Raleigh, N.C., and Kelly Todd of Chesapeake; seven great-grandchildren; three nephews; three nieces; several great-nieces and nephews; and many friends. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Bethel Assembly of God Church, 938 Decatur St., Chesapeake, by the Rev. Ron Wienke. Burial will follow in Olive Branch Cemetery, Portsmouth. The family will receive friends at Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge, from 7 to 9 p.m. today.6 |
