Death* | 14 June 1924 | He died at Birmingham, Jefferson Co., Alabama, on 14 June 1924 at age 50 The Ashland Progress, June, 1924 Ex-Sheriff J.B. Miller Killed near Birmingham J.B. Miller, former sheriff of Clay County, and more recently special agent for the Southern Railway, was found in a seriously wounded condition near the tracks of the L & N Railway a few miles south of Birmingham at an early hour Saturday morning. He was picked up and carried to St. Vincent's Hospital where he died at 9 o'clock. Railroad officials as well as relatives seem to be at a loss to explain the accident and Mr. Miller when found was too seriously injured to make any statement. So far as is know there were no eye witnesses to the accident or tragedy and whether or not he fell from a moving train, or while attempting to board the train, or was the victim of foul play has not been definitely determined, but the nature of his injuries is said to indicate that he was the victim of foul play. The body of Mr. Miller was brought back to Clay Co. for burial, the funeral being held at County Line Church in his old home community, Monday afternoon. The funeral service was conducted by Revs. F.J. Fleming and F.J. Ingram and interment was made by the Masonic Fraternity. A very large congregation of relatives and friends attended. Mr. Miller was born and reared in Clay County and resided here continuously until just a few years ago when he moved to Birmingham. He was prominent in official and business circles, having served the county one term as sheriff and for several years conducted a hardware store in Ashland. He is survived by his wife, two sons, James and Charles, and three daughters, Mrs. Dewey Barrett, Mrs. McFadden and Miss Ida Mildred Miller, all of whom were present at the funeral. Additional Comments: James B. "Jimmy" Miller (12/8/1873 - 6/14/1924) was born in Mellow Valley, AL and died in Jefferson Co. He was the son of J.J. "Kern" (1842-1915) and Nancy Dean (1840-1924) Miller. He was married to Viola Wood (11/27/1878 - 1/25/1959). After original interment at County Line Cemetery, Jimmy's remains were moved following Viola's death to join her in the Mellow Valley Baptist Cemetery. J.J. and Nancy Dean Miller are buried at County Line. Jimmy Miller was Clay County Sheriff from 1911-1914, and later became a special agent for the Southern Railway.1 |
Burial* | | His body was interred at Mellow Valley, Clay Co., Alabama.2 |
Biography* | | According to Mrs. Wynema Fargason Roughton in a 15 Sep 1978 letter, J. B. or "Jimmy" Miller was "Sheriff of Clay" before moving to Birmingham, AL. His son, James B. Miller, Jr., wrote in a 19 Sep 1978 letter, that his father was originally buried at County Line Baptist Church Cemetery "but was later moved to Mellow Valley Cemetery after my mother, Ada Viola Miller, died." |
