Biography* | Hans Jacob Geiger (or Gyger), former cantonial governor, moved his family from the Canton of St. Gall, Switzerland, to the Carolinas, leaving in September 1736, and arriving at Charleston, SC, February 1, 1737. They were some of the origial settlers of Saxe Gotha Township in the Congarees, Orangeburg District, now Lexinton Co, SC. This area is loacted on the Congaree River about 8 miles below present Columbia, SC. The years 1734-1744 saw a great exodus from Switzerland to the Carolinas, especially from the Canton of Zuerich. At first discouragement was used to keep the people from going, but finally force was used. People could lose their citizenship rights, property rights, even be imprisoned if they returned from the Carolinas. Those buying land from people wishing to leave were heavily fined. Some people left secretly, trying to avoid the heavy emigration tax that was leavied. That tax got as high as 10%. Hans Jacob and his sons were among the "Third Transport" of Swiss to arrive in Charleston. They came on the ship "Prince of Wales," under Captain George Dunbarr, having sailed from Rotterdam, according to the "Carolina Gazette." The Geigers were followers of the Rev. John Ulrich Giessendanner, and were at odds with another group who were followers of Tobler. Tobler's diary, written between February 11 and March 18, 1737, contains entries concerning "Mr. Giezedanner and his adherents, because they had already caused so much strife on the journey." Mentioned were Hans Jacob Giger and his sons, and Abraham Giger, "People from the Rheinthal." The Tobler group split with Giezendanner's followers over the religious conflict Land was set aside by the Governor and Council for the Giezendanner group in Fredericksburgh Township (Camden vicinity), but Tobler noted in his diary that Giezendanner did not go there. Within the year (1737) they left Charleston for the Saxe Gotha, Orangeburg area. The Giezendanner Record: Married by John Giezendanner V. D. M., (nephew of the elder John Ulrich Giezendanner): Hans Jacob Gyger to Margaret Shuler, widow, 1740. (This is probably Hans Jacob, b.1720, son of Hans Jacob Geiger, b.1679, who "now married" petitioned for land in 1744.) Antony Ernst to Ann Barbara Gyger, 1740, (Not known, but could be daughter of Hans Jacob, Sr. ?) Margaret, widow of Jacob Gyger was present at a christening on Oct. 6, 1753. This is thought to be Margareta (Feerin) Geiger, widow of Hans Jacob. She was also at another christening on Apr. 28, 1756. One John Geiger, thought to be a son of Hans Jacob, Sr. but could be a cousin, according to Guy F.Spearman, married Emily Murff, sister of Ann Murff who m. (2) John Geiger, son of Herman. John and Emily (Murff) Geiger had a dau. Emily, b. ca1762-63 and d. in 1780s. According to legend, Emily Geiger was the heroine of the American Revolution who carried a message from Gen. Green to Gen. Sumpter and was intercepted by the Tories. A monument to her was erected by the DAR in the State House in Columbia, S. C. Will of Herman Geiger, son of Hans Jacob, Sr., dated Oct. 20, 1751 mentions brother-in-law John Gollman. Thus John Gollman's first wife is thought to have been a sister of Herman Geiger and dau of Hans Jacob Geiger, Sr. | |
