Biography* | April 1941 | A newspaper clipping, from the "Democrat," April 1941, courtesy of Douglas O. Culpepper: Joseph L. Culpepper Quits Tobacco at 65, Lives to 94 Collinsville -- Known largely over western Grayson county, Joseph L. Culpepper celebrated his ninety-fourth birthday on April 1 with many old friends and relatives present at a birthday dinner. After the meal, he sat around telling jokes of the civil war and early pioneer days. He lives with his son, W. Steve Culpepper in the Ethel community, four miles east of Collinsville, where he may be seen working around with spade and shovel. He was an active farmer until his eightieth year, having lived at his present farm home during the past 43 years. He chewed and smoked tobacco 50 years, but attributes his long life to the fact that he quit the tobacco habit after he was 65. J. L. Culpepper was born April 1, 1847, at Atlanta, Ga., the son of Steven and Elizabeth Culpepper (unreadable) of Atlanta. In 1871 he was married to Elizabeth Fielder in Clayborne, La., by the Rev. J. S. Stephenson, and moved to Texas in 1898, settling on his farm at Ethel. He has five living children. They are W. S. Culpepper of Ethel, Mrs. C. C. Haynes of Montague, George Culpepper of Muscogee, Okla., Luther E. Culpepper of Tioga, and Mrs. C. C. Pitman of Kaw, Okla. Mr. Culpepper states that he has a record few men can duplicate: he has lived 94 years without using whisky, and during all of that time has never been called to serve on a jury and was never called before a grand jury. His father served during the entire four years of the civil war. A boy of 14, he stayed at home and kept up the Louisiana farm as best he could. He said, "They were mighty hard times. The only meat we had was game. Game was plentiful, even deer. When I wanted meat, I would grab up father's old smooth-bore and bring back a buck, or a couple of turkeys. If mother was in a hurry for fresh meat, I would just go out near the house and kill a half dozen squirrels, which I could do in a few minutes. I never used anything but a Georgia stock (illegible) "scooter" plow until I came to Texas. Mr. Culpepper is a member of the Baptist Church and attends regularly. |

Burial* | 1943 | His body was interred in 1943 at Collinsville Cemetery, Collinsville, Grayson Co., Texas.8 |

Civil War* | between 1863 and 1865 | John Culpepper, enlisted 16 Mar 1863 at Athens, LA, as a Pvt. in Co. C of the 19th Regiment of the Louisiana Infantry. He was captured 25 Nov 1863 at the Battle of Missionary Ridge and taken prisoner to Rock Island Prison camp in Illinois. He was a "Galvanized Yankee", joining the Union Army while a prisoner. He enlisted in the Frontier Service, U.S. Army, Co. E , 2nd US Volunteers on Oct. 6, 1864 and served until discharged on Nov.7, 1865. From the records it appears all of his Union service was in Kansas. The United States encouraged these men to join by promising them freedom without having to fight against their homeland. The prison camps were insufferable and I wonder how many of us today could stand what these men went through. Then, after serving and drawing a pension a few years in his old age, the government withdrew the pension on the basis that these men had not helped to put down the rebellion. It was later restored by an act of Congress.3 |

Obituary for ELIZA CATHERINE CULPEPPER HAYNES, LaSalle Parish, Lousiana Date: January 6, 1949 Headline: Funeral Services for Mrs. Eliza Haynes held Monday Jan. 3 Final rites for Mrs. Eliza Catherine Haynes, 82, of Jena, who died Sunday, Jan. 2, at her residence, were held at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Jan 3, at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. J.P. Owens officiating. Interment was in the Nolley Memorial Cemetery at Jena. . Mrs. Haynes had been ill about six weeks. . She was born Eliza Catherine Culpepper on Feb 22, 1865, at Colquit, La. She was married to the late A.H. Haynes in 1880. They lived in Colquit, Weldon, Verda, Columbia, and Jena, La. . The deceased was active in church work both as a Sunday School teacher and missionary work. She was a member of the Baptist faith. . She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Janie Stewart, Jena, and two sons, Frank, of Jena, and Milo J. Haynes, of Lisbon, La. . Two brothers, ten grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren also survive. . Grandsons who served as pallbearers were; M.J., Orville, Russell, Joe, and Don Haynes; Leville Glen, Edwin and Harold Stewart, and A.L. Mc Donald. . Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Kinner & Stevens Home for Funerals. . Wedding Anniversay Celebrated by Pioneer Couple . Lisbon, La., Jan 7 (Special) -- Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Haynes of Good Pine celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary Tuesday, December 23, as guests of Mr. and Mrs. M. J. Haynes of Lisbon. . A. H. Haynes was born in Claiborne Parish a few years before the Civil War. Mrs. Haynes (Elizabeth Culpepper) was also born in Claiborne during the Civil War. They were therefore children during th eCivil War and experienced many severe hardships. The Fathers of both served in the Confederate Army. They had to pass through the dire times of the Reconstruction period, in which the white people of the South had to go through some very trying ordeals. They were able to survive all of this and were married on December 23, 1880, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen J. Culpepper, father and mother of the bride, near Colquitt. The Rev. J. U. H. Whorton conducted the ceremony, and the license was presented to them by the late Drew Furguson of Homer, then Clerk of Court. . Shortly after marriage they left Colquitt and moved to the Weldon Community, where they cleared the land and established their home. Here it was that their six children were born. They remained in this community as esteemed Christian citizens until December 1906 (could be read as 1905) when they moved to Verda, Grant Parish, in order to better educate their children, as the public schools of Claiborne were very poor at that time. Their two youngest children received high school diplomas. . Since that time they have made their home in the parishes of Caldwell and LaSalle, the latter being their present home. . During their fifty years of married life they have always mutually shared their hardships and burdens as well as their pleasures and prosperity. Of course life hasn't all been shunshine, for during the fifty years the Death angel has three times visited their home and taken one of their children. Once, while they lived in Claiborne, death took their two year old son, Johnnie. Again, in April of 1919 when Alice the 21 year old school teacher daughter and baby of the family was suddenly taken. And again in March of 1925, when A. H. Haynes Jr. was called home, leaving three small boys. They, with the help of their widowed mother, [Stella Russell] have cared for them as their own. . They have now reached an advanced age. Mr Haynes being 75 and Mrs. Haynes near 66. All of their lives they have been active members of the Missionary Baptist Church. The doors of their home always being open to ministers of the gospel of any denomination. . It seemed very fitting that they should return to the parish of their birth and marriage on this 50th marriage anniversary. . They and all of their children and grandchildren and several of their brothers and sisters as well as nieces and nephews were present at a beautiful turkey dinner in the home of Mr. and Mrs. M. J. Haynes. The home was beautifully decorated in Christmas colors and the table, large enough to accomodate all, was overflowing with deliciious foods which were served in the old-fashioned way. In the center of the table stood the large double decked cake topped with a miniature bride and groom. . During the pleasant afternoon other relatives and friends called to see and congratulate the pair upon their long and happy wedded life. Many brought attractive and useful gifts. Several pictures of the couple were taken, one with the cake. Immediately following, the cake was distributed to the guests in conjunction with a glass of punch. . Those present were: Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Haynes, and their children, Frank Haynes, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Stewart, Mr. and Mrs. M. J. Haynes; Grandchildren Edwin [Dick], Ayleen and Harold Stewart; M. J., Orville, and Russell Haynes; Levelle Haynes, Glen and Joe Haynes; J. H. Haynes and granddaughter Irene Faust; Mr. Charlie Newton Culpepper and son Cuba; Mr. and Mrs. Stephen H. Culpepper and their son, Wm. Sherrill; Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Vansant; Mr. and Mrs. Lorenzo Mitcham and children, L. D., Walter, and James; Mr. and Mrs. Dallas D. Culpepper and twin sons, Billy and Bobbie; Mrs. John Allen Culpepper and children Steve C. and Nelta Joyce; Mr. and Mrs. Cleveland Greer and children; Mrs. Pauline Odom, Margaret and Edith; Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Culpepper and children Jocelyn and Billy Jean; Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Fluitt and children Roberta and Alma. . Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Vansant motored from Dallas, Texas, to be present at the celebration.
