Biography* | | Mrs. F. D. (Betty Lee Collins) Hale wrote, 9 Jan 1978, of her great-grandfather, Paul Joshua Crosby, whom she called "Grandpa Crosby:" He was not very tall, slender and walked with a cane. I remember being at Grandpa Crosby's when he died.... In later years I learned that Grandpa Crosby had sent for my father. Expecting to stay for only the day and for my mother to visit her Grandfather for a short time we all went along. When we arrived by wagon I remember a lot of people being there.... We were told that we would be going home late in the evening but as Grandpa Crosby's condition worsened we stayed. Grandpa Crosby had built a stand outside the house and under a pecan tree that stood very close, a place for airing the bedding as was custom at the time.... To keep us quiet and out from underfoot in the house we were put to bed with quilts on the stand. It was a big wooden post in the ground with chicken wire over the top. How excited we were, about six great-granddaughters spending the night out of doors together. Early the next day we were playing out in front of the house and across the road near the barn when Hazel Crosby Braddy rode up on a horse.... She asked my father about Grandpa Crosby and he told her he had just died.... When I heard my father and Hazel talking about Grandpa I realized that we would soon be going home and that in the future we would not make visits to Grandpa's as we had done. A child's sense of something missing or of great change but too young to realize the real loss. Mrs. F. D. (Betty Lee Collins) Hale provided the following obituary in 19 Nov 1993 notes about her family. It is from p. 2 of the Moultrie Observer Tuesday afternoon, 5 Jul 1938: Funeral Rites for P. J. Crosby, 85 Mr. P. J. Crosby for more than a half century a resident of this county died at his home near Pavo, Sunday morning. He was 85 years old and engaged in farming until his health forced him to retire a few years ago. He was a member of the Methodist Church at Pavo. Final rites were held for the deceased at Wesley Chapel near Berlin at 10 o'clock, Monday morning with six grandsons serving as pall bearers [Lee noted that there were only four grandsons living in 1938 so two must have been grandsons-in-law]. Mr. Crosby is survived by three sons; C. R. Crosby, G. R. Crosby, W. E. Crosby; and three daughters Mrs. J. F. Herndon, Mrs. J. J. Branch, Miss Emma Crosby; and one sister, Mrs. I. C. Smith of Corledge and 14 grandchildren. Lee added that the certificate of death gave the cause of death as old age and coronary thrombosis. |
