"I am the great-grandaughter of William H. Culpepper, #1675, from Nash County, NC...
"Our family history says that James Madison was an illegitimate child. His mother, a woman named Polly Culpepper, had come to the Coppadge plantation (in the Nash County area) to teach the children. She became pregnant from one of the boys (I assume a Coppadge), abandoned the child and ran off with a man named Marshall. I also understand that when he married Catherine Upchurch, she was disowned from her family because she married a bastard child."1

"I am the great-grandaughter of William H. Culpepper, #1675, from Nash County, NC...
"William H. Culpepper was also known as Billy. I knew his wife's name as Minnie Lewis, not Harriet, but will have to check further on that. Billy later ran a pharmacy in Spring Hope, NC which was destroyed by fire. His wife suffered from mental illness. After the fire, she was placed in a mental hosptial and never left. My grandmother, Annie Louise Culpepper recalled visiting her in the hospital when she was a young girl, but never knew much about her.10
