Biography | 2008 | Art Colony Grows Sunday, November 2, 2008 5:40 PM CST Sarah Carlisle Towery Art Colony brings 54 artists to Lake Martin By Kenneth Boone October saw the largest-ever meeting of the Sarah Carlisle Towery Art Colony on Lake Martin. Margaret George, president of the Alabama Art Colony organization that hosts the annual fall artist gathering as well as the Kitty Dark Kids Arts Camp in June, said the number of both artists and instructors at the Art Colony increased dramatically this year. The event drew artists the across the Southeast, including students from North Carolina, Mississippi, Georgia and Florida. "We had three instructors and 54 artists participating," George said. "A lot of women from the Mississippi Art Colony came. They brought a lot of experience and fun. There were a lot of new faces this year ... We couldn't have asked for better weather." George said that this year was the first time that visiting artists had the chance to use the new Harbor Lodge facilities, and it was a big hit. "The artists loved it because they had their own individual space and they could meet on the porches and chat and discuss their philosophies on art," she said. "They thought (Harbor Lodge) was a perfect place for a retreat." In recent years, the Art Colony featured two art instructors, and artists ranging from amateurs to professionals chose to paint with one during the week. But because of the large number of artists who registered, three instructors were hired to lead the 2008 colony. This year's instructors were Roger Dale Brown, a plein aire artist from Nashville; Holly Roberts from Corrales, N.M., who is nationally known for her collages; and Hugh Williams, an art professor emeritus from Auburn University who focuses on avant garde styles of art incorporating unusual materials. Roberts, who works with layers of materials that often include photographs and paint, was teaching in the Harbor Lodge facility, while the two other classes met at Children's Harbor. "Basically, what I am an expert in teaching is layering media," she said, explaining that "media" could be anything from dirt and leaves to paint and photos. "Just anything you want to make your painting." Roberts said she began her career as a painter, which led her to experiment with oil over acrylic paints, and that led her down the path to the collages that earned her national fame. She said she used to paint on black and white photographs, and now often works with photos placed over paint. "I think it became just a really interesting way to get to your creative self," she said of her collages. "There's real pleasure in marrying the different things that shouldn't work ... but do." In trying to decide what to put together in a piece, Roberts says she uses "visual intelligence." "That's what I do for a living, I look at things," she said. "I love to paint and I love photographs." She said working in the new Harbor Lodge facility was a treat. "It's just a gorgeous place, brand new and state of the art," she said, describing the conference center and audio visual equipment. "I did a presentation last night and everything was brand new." The Art Colony is named in honor of Alexander City painter Sarah Carlisle Towery, who died last year. It began as a birthday celebration for "Miss Sarah," as she was affectionately known, where she and her friends got together on the lake to paint in the fall. Instructor Hugh Williams participated in the original get-together for Towery's 80th birthday in 1992. "We've come full circle because at this one, we celebrated his 80th birthday," George said. Over the years, the Art Colony has grown into a much larger, more public event, and it is now supported financially in part by grants from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. Additional funding comes from tuition and other donations. "We gave four full scholarships this year, three of them were through the generosity of Carlisle Towery," George said of "Miss Sarah's" son. This year's Art Colony was held Oct. 6-10. The $525 tuition included room, meals and five days of professional art instruction. "We served breakfast and a country lunch, and then heavy hors d'ourves at night which is provided by different galleries in the area," George said. Red Hill Gallery, Stonehenge and MacDavid & Co. galleries hosted evening receptions for the event, when instructors spoke to the whole group. On Thursday night the colony held a public reception where artists offered works for sale. George said she thinks there are a number of reasons that the Art Colony is growing. "We respect different traditions of art," she said, explaining that the artists have a number of different artistic styles of instruction to choose from. "Our instructors come from different backgrounds." She said the excellent facilities and the location on Lake Martin are a big draw. "And I credit the board with a lot of hard work," she said. "We think it's going to get bigger and better every year," George said. "We think the future is very rosy ... it's also indigo and lemon yellow and cadmium red! Seriously, we're growing and we are thrilled to be attracting nationally respected instructors and students who are featured in galleries around the southeast." Married Name | 2 December 1971 | As of 2 December 1971, her married name was Craft. |
Residence* | 1998 | Mary resided at Talladega, Talladega Co., Alabama, in 1998. |
Biography* | Mary was born at the John Alexander Hodnett family home which was built by her great-grandfather, James Hodnett, near a trading post called Frog Eye near the entrance to the Hodnett Bend of the Tallapoosa River.1 Frog Eye is in Tallapoosa Co., AL near the Chambers Co., AL border about five miles south of Wadley in Randolph Co., 2 Growing up, Mary's favorite activities were riding horses on the family farm and boating down the Tallapoosa River.2 She attended elementary school in Wadley and graduated from Wadley High School.2 Mary's father then accepted a job with Russell Mills and the family moved to Alexander City, AL and this is where Mary met her first husband.2 John Winbourn Remson had worked for a newspaper, Our Mountain Home, which became The Daily Home and he was working as an advertising salesman for The Alexander City Outlook when he met Mary.2 The couple later married and, about five years after their marriage, John and his brother, Andrew Cunningham Remson, bought Brannon's Printing Company.2 Mary assisted them with everything from answering the phones and sweeping the floors to proofreading and bookkeeping.2 When her husband died in 1952, Mary sold her share of the business to Alec Thompson who had already bought out Andrew Remson's share.2 Mary remained active in the community and, for about five years, she worked for the Talladega County Civil Defense Department.2 In 1971, Mary married Bert Lee Craft, Jr., an engineer who had moved from Hattiesburg, MS to work for Kimberly-Clark in Childersburg, Talladega Co., AL.2 Unfortunately, Mary's second husband died less than three years after they were married. Mary was 67 years old. Mary continued her community service. Harris E. Love, the 1979 Campaign Chairman of The United Way of North Talladega County, Inc., recognized3 Mary's "outstanding leadership and performance in this campaign" adding that he was "fully aware of the many contacts and hours of work involved...." Mary also served as a docent at Heritage Hall Museum, worked to preserve antebellum homes and served as hostess for the Dr. C. L. Salter home on East Street for the "Talladega Pilgrimage" which would become "April in Talladega."2 In addition to being a member of the Talladega County Historical Society, Mary also served on the boards of Landmarks of Talladega, Oak Hill Cemetery and Marianna Greene Henry Special Equestrians.2 Mary is also active in her church, serving as an Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Talladega.2 Throughout the years, Mary has traveled to such places as Greece, Spain, Africa and the British Isles. After one such trip, Mary wrote:4 My trip to the British Isles was perfect.... One of the highlights of the trip: my friend here has a cousin in London, she wrote her, Lady Davidson, and made all arrangements. The cousin, the Dowager Viscountess Davidson (you call her Lady Davidson) she is also Baroness Northchurch (a life peerage - which enables her to be a member of the House of Lords) at any rate, the arrangements were for us to have tea with Lady Davidson, shortly after arriving in London.... We put on our best bib and tucker, got a cab and off we went.... | |
Death* | 3 August 2006 | She died at Talladega, Talladega Co., Alabama, on 3 August 2006 at age 99 Tip of the hat: Talladega will miss Mary Craft Published: August 8, 2006 She was one of those colorful characters that brings a smile just by mentioning her name. At 99, Mary Craft passed away this past week, but the memories of her and the role she played in Talladega civic and historical affairs will linger for a long time to come. Craft believed in being involved. Whether it was historical preservation, Landmarks, Heritage Hall or as a volunteer with the Red Door Kitchen, you would find her at the heart of activities. She was the kind of citizen a town is lucky to have - one who sees what it can be and works to get it there. She will be missed by all who knew her, and Talladega will have a void that won't soon be filled. Source: The Daily Home, Consolidated Publishing Co.5 |
