His medals included two bronze stars and the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry.1 He later served as a drill sergeant at Ft. Bliss, TX and at Ft. Jackson, SC.1 While serving with the third training brigade at Fort Bliss, TX, he was recognized for originating a magazine loader for an M-14 rifle.2 Bob retired as a Sgt. 1st Class after 20 years of service. 3 During this time, in addition to the bronze stars and Cross of Gallantry, he received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, Good Conduct Medals (1st - 5th Awards), the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, a Drill Sergeant ID Badge, a Combat Infantryman Badge, a Civil Act HM (1st Cluster), an Expert Badge with M-14 Rifle Bar, and a Presidential Unit Citation (for his service in Korea).4
Bob retired to Anniston, AL and he returned to his religious roots. Years earlier he had helped to establish Weaver Church of Christ and so he became a member of Ohatchee Church of Christ. Bro. Bill Snow noted: 5
In my fellowship with Bob, somehow we always ended up talking doctrine. (That was good for both of us.) He'd ask the tough questions, the "how's" and "why's", and he amazed me at how well he knew God's word!!!
Bob was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans.1 Bob Ervin Butler died of a heart attack at the age of 54.3 The American flag that was draped over his casket was the same one that had been draped over his father's casket 20 years earlier and it was given into the care of Bob's son, Robert Dale Butler.6 |
