Residence* | 1999 | John resided at Lindside, Monroe Co., West Virginia, in 1999. |
Biography* | The following bio was included in a 27 Apr 1993 John William Culpepper letter: After graduating from college, 1960, he taught school for two years then was appointed a Special Agent in the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He was an Agent for 23 years, serving in Birmingham, Alabama, Miami, Florida, Philadelphia, Pa, (as an agent and later as a Squad Supervisor) Washington, D.C. (as a Hdqs Supervisor) and Beckley, West Virginia as a resident agent. He served in the Army for 2 years, 1953 to 1955, one year, 1954, in Company A, 366 E.A.B., 417 Brigade, 931 Group, Korea. In a 17 Aug 1993 letter, John William provided additional information about himself: I taught school for 2 years after graduating from Southern Illinois University in 1960 and then applied for the position Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. I received an appointment and entered on duty 6 August 1962 at the Justice Department in Washington D. C. After training school I was assigned to the Birmingham Division and arrived there in November 1962. I served 14 months in the Birmingham Division involved in various criminal investigative matters. There were 14 Bombings of a racial nature during that time. On one occasion an older agent and I were on night surveillance when a bomb went off at a home we had just passed a matter of a minute or two before. The debris was still coming down when we pulled up in front of the home. The situation became rather tense the rest of that night. After Birmingham I was assigned to Miami where I worked jewel thefts for two years. I was then transferred to Philadelphia in January 1966 and worked bank robberies for 6 years and in November 1972 I was promoted to Supervisor of the fugitive squad. The squad handled fugitive matters, kidnapping, extortions, air craft hijacking and other criminal violations. In July or August of 1975 I was transferred to Bureau Hdqs [Headquarters] in Washington, D.C. where I worked as a Hdq Supervisor handling various criminal violations. I requested to return to the field in May 1984, where I worked as a resident agent in West Virginia until I retired in November 1985. During my Bureau career I received 13 personal letters of commendation from the Director. I worked 6.6 years starting in January 1985 for the Department of Defense as an investigator. The following is from the Meriwether Free Press for 3 Aug 1993: Nine Generations Represented At Culpepper Family Reunion Nine generations of the Culpepper family met on Saturday, July 24, for a reunion at the Community Center in Lone Oak. The descendants of John William Culpepper and Nancy Gillespie Culpepper have had roots in Meriwether County since the 1830's George Washington Culpepper, son of John and Nancy, had eleven children, who lived in several communities in Meriwether County. The homeplace is about two miles from Lone Oak and although the original house is gone, the house he built during the Civil War is in good condition and is the current home of Mrs. Lydia Culpepper Yeargan. Roll call was made and members from each family identified themselves. A five month-old baby boy from Pensacola, Florida, represented the eighth generation. His ancestry was traced through George Washington Culpepper. Andrew Reed Gambrell of Talledega, Alabama, represented the ninth generation. His ancestry was traced through William Henry Culpepper, brother of George Washington Culpepper. The Culpepper family is well-known as one of the pioneer families of Meriwether County. They have played a great part in the political life of Meriwether County and Georgia. The late Nathan F. Culpepper, attorney, of Greenville, served a number of years in the Senate. The late James Wesley Culpepper, attorney, of Fayetteville, served in the House of Representatives. Several members of the family have served as county officers. Approximately one hundred people were present at this reunion. Barbecue and all the fixings were served by Johnny Brown's of Hogansville. A special welcome was made to John and Phyllis Culpepper of Greenville, West Virginia, who inspired the reunion. | |
