According to a descendant, Mrs. Lackey, (p. 59) Hampton joined the Confederate Army 7 Apr 1862. He was private in Company E 31st Regiment Alabama Infantry. He became a prisoner of war when Grant took Vicksburg but was exchanged on 9 Jul 1863. He rejoined the Confederate troops and was captured on 16 Dec 1864 at Nashville. He was moved to Camp Chase, Ohio on 6 Jan 1865 and was released 12 Jun 1865. |

When she was well into her eighties, burglers tried to quietly pry open her bedroom window late one night. One was in the process of hoisting the other through the window. Gramma Tate awoke and sat up in bed. She shouted, "if ya'll want in this house, get around to the front door like everyone else!" |
