Date: Tue, 2 Jun 2009 Subject: Liberty West Cemetery Wadley Al. To: <[email protected]>
After the time I walked over the Liberty West Baptist cemetery I reported it to some of my Culpepper contacts. One of them sent me a little plat drawing of the area showing some of the properties of Culpeppers and others. I am unable to find that paper since we have been having that discussion but I am sure that the area for the cemetery was originally owned by John Edward McGill, SR. b. 1798 in S outh Carolina. He had a son John Edward MeGill , Jr who was born in Gwinnett, Co. Ga. John Jr. had a son named Robert Jackson McGill who was born in Randolph Co. Alabama. Robert Jackson "Bob" McGill married one of my mother's sisters, Clara Emmett Culpepper. They moved to Hopkins Co. Texas just before 1900. I knew "Bob" well myself. He was a marvelous story teller. They are related to the Moncus family who still remain in the Wadley, Louina area.
John Edward Sr. gave the property for the church and cemetery. I am thinking I was told the first church was made of logs. I can't be sure about that. This has been an interesting subject. Tommie.3 |
