Biography*  The following entry is from p. 161 of Marriages and Death Notices from Southern Christian Advocate - South Carolina 1837-1860: Died in Meriwether Co, Ga., Aug. 5, 1848, Mrs. Eliz. G., wife of Wm. G. Carlile and daughter of William and Sarah Elliott. She was born Monroe Co. Ga. Jan 4, 1827, married Jan. 13, 1846.
Could "Eliz. G." have been named Elizabeth Gillespie Culpepper for Sarah's grandmother Elizabeth (Peek) Gillespie? Based on the date of birth, Elizabeth would have been one of the three females age 0-5 years of age in the 1830 census in her father's household. However, she was not noted in the 1840 census. At least one other teenager was also missing, perhaps they were staying with relatives.
Elizabeth's younger sister, Martha F. Elliott, married James M. Carlisle, the younger brother of Elizabeth's husband, William. A 28 year old "William Carlisle" who was born in South Carolina was noted living near the James M. Carlise family in the 1850 census of Meriwether Co., GA.

Biography* The following obituary was preserved in a Parker family scrapbook by Mrs. Claudia Parker Blankenship and was printed 6 Sep 1994 in "Francis Carlile (Carlisle) A Family History" an unpublished manuscript compiled by William Robert Carlisle and Tommy Ray Carlisle. The obituary was written by Robert Joseph Augustus Parker, a son of Elizabeth Ann Carlile Parker Willingham, and was published in the Southern Christian Advocate 9 Oct 1872: WM G. CARLISLE died on the 8th of August, 1872, in Jefferson county, Fla., after a painful illness of two days. The subject of this sketch was born in Abbeville county, S. C., Feb. 22d, 1822 [Francis and Mary Carlile Bible Record notes that William G. Carlile was born, 21 Feb 1821], moved to Merriwether [Meriwether] county, Ga. with his parents when quite young; joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, when a mere boy, and ever lived a holy life, walking in all the ordinances of God blameless. A better man l never knew, I was with him at home, abroad, in the army, and under some very trying circumstances, and I never knew him to hesitate between right and wrong. He was a dutiful son, kind husband, faithful friend, true soldier, and an upright Christian. He was married in 1846, to Miss Elizabeth Elliott, a devoted Christian, but the Lord saw proper to take her to himself in about eighteen months after their marriage. In 1862 he went to Florida, where he terminated his useful life, which had been made so more by example than precept, he being very timid. In the summer of 1871 he spent a few weeks with his relatives and friends in Merriwether [Meriwether] county, Georgia, and many of us will long remember his valuable aid in the protracted meetings at Freeman's Chapel; and we fondly cherished the hope that he would soon return again to be one in our midst. But alas for human hopes and expectations, how soon blighted. The Master called, and we submit. May we be prepared to meet him in heaven where there will be no more testing. _____________________________R. A. P.
