(Daughter) 1930 Census | 1 April 1930 | Jalie and Henrietta was listed as a daughter in Robert Hall Culpepper's household on the 1930 Census at Meridian, Lauderdale Co., Mississippi.2 |
Marriage* | 25 December 1945 | She married John Watson Land on 25 December 1945 at age 21. |
Married Name | 25 December 1945 | As of 25 December 1945, her married name was Land. |
Death* | 22 April 2015 | She died at Cuba, Sumter Co., Alabama, on 22 April 2015 at age 91. |
Obituary* | 23 April 2015 | Jalie Frances Land was born on March 28, 1924 and passed peacefully from this world on April 22, 2015. She is survived by her grandchildren, Wendy Michelle Land, John Douglas Land, Mark Nathan Cavender, and Melissa Gate Cavender all of Calhoun, Georgia; two sisters, Carolyn Antionette Culpepper Carter of Jacksonville, Florida and Henrietta Culpepper Glascock of Jacksonville, Florida and a brother, John James Culpepper of Cuba, Alabama; along with 7 adoring great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Jalie was born and reared in the country near Liberty Baptist Church, Toomsuba, Mississippi, her home church. She graduated from Sumter County High School in 1942. She moved to Birmingham, Alabama after her graduation to work for the phone company and the next year met John Watson Land while he was on furlough from his duty in the Pacific Theater during World War II. They courted by mail for two years and were wed on December 25, 1945 upon his release from the military. Their only child, John Lynn, was born on February 1, 1947. Jalie and her small family lived in Saudi Arabia for five years as her husband had an excellent opportunity to train mechanics there. It was for her, paradise. They also lived again in Birmingham for another three years and Atlanta for nearly twenty years before circling back home to Toomsuba for the past thirty-three years. Jalie retired from Southern Bell Telephone Company after a successful career, but is most known for her remarkable roles as sister, wife, mother, grandmother, favorite aunt and hostess to all. She loved to entertain people in her home and delighted in making those around her feel at home. Jalie lost her only son in 1982 and while it broke her heart, it did not break her spirit. By God’s grace, with the help of her husband and family, and by her own inner strength she found a way to continue living life joyfully. Unconditional love, compassion and kindness are her hallmarks. When her husband died in 2004, she carried on with the same courage and grace. She was a cancer survivor several times over and taught many of us how to embrace life no matter the circumstances. To say she was sweet does not begin to capture her generous and loving nature.3 |

+ Mabel H. Culpepper, Nov. 6, 1886 - July 7, 1966. - Considering the date of his parent's marriage, a birth year of 1883 seems more reasonable than the 1882 recorded on his tombstone.

Biography* | 12 June 2006 | Nancy Harben wrote on 12 Jun 2006, "My grandfather Frank (Pawpaw) died when I was about 5 years old--somewhere around 1961. I think he died in New Orleans, but we buried him in a little church cemetery near the Mississippi/Alabama line (Union, MS or Union, AL or could it have been the church cemetery mentioned in the family archives--Liberty Baptist Church in Cuba AL?) Since my parents aren't alive to help, all I have is my child's memory to go on... "...according to my grandmother Laura, he left during the depression, supposedly to find work, leaving her with 4 children to raise alone. He was apparently an alcoholic, before the term was heard of. She brought her children up to believe that he was dead. Her bitterness toward him never allowed them or us to ever mention his name or ask any questions about him or his people. My father's brother Mallard, who lived in Jackson, was a huge Jimmy Rodgers fan and one May during the festival in Meridian, someone came up to him and asked his name and told him he knew where his father was and took him to see him. We lived near Selma, Alabama at Craig Air Force Base, where my father was stationed at the time. Not too long after that, Pawpaw died. I remember the funeral and seeing my daddy cry for the first time."6 |

Biography* | Robert Archie Culpepper was born April 20, 1909 at Demopolis, AL. a son of Thomas Melton Culpepper and Mary Alice Morgan. He was one of eight children, four boys and four girls. He died January 27, 1987 and was buried in Meadowlawn Cemetery, Enterprise, AL. Bob Culpepper attended grammar school and high school in Demopolis, from which he graduated in May 1927. He attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) where he played freshman and varsity football in 1927 and 1928. At Auburn he became a member of Theta Chi Social Fraternity, and Keys Interfraternity Club. He helped his brother, T.M. Culpepper, Jr., establish the Culpepper Electric Company in 1926 and worked with him during the summers until the fall of 1929. He was a full-time employee from the fall of 1929 until September 1932. This company is still strong today. In September 1932 Bob Culpepper accepted a position of salesman with the Liggett & Myers Tobacco Co., with head-quarters in Troy, AL. In September 1935 he was promoted to city salesman in Birmingham, and was promoted to assistant division manager in December 1939. For 8 weeks in early 1940 he was trained in New York City, and then sent back to headquarters in Atlanta, GA. He was next transferred to Knoxville, TN., then returned to Atlanta for a short period. In the spring of 1941 he was transferred to Lexington, KY. as Division Manager of eastern Kentucky. Robert A. Culpepper was commissioned as a Lieutenant Junior Grade in the U.S. Naval Reserve. He attended Indoctrination School at Hollywood Beach, FL., and Gunnery School at Camp Shelton, Virginia. He was next assigned to the U.S. Naval Armed Guard Headquarters in Brooklyn, N.Y. He served on different ships in the European and Mediterranean Theatres until the Japanese surrender came. His last duty station was as Club Officer, Officers' Club, Camp Wallace, TX. He returned to inactive duty status in the Naval Reserve at Camp Wallace in February 1946. Lieut. Jr. Grade Culpepper later received a promotion to Lieutenant Commander, U.S.N.R. Upon separation from the Navy, he returned to the employ of Liggett & Myers with headquarters in Jacksonville, FL. He remained there until August 1946 when he resigned to found his own company. On September 1, 1946 he founded the Culpepper Cigar Co., in Columbus, GA. which he later sold in November 1949. He then founded the Culpepper Vending Co., head-quartered in Ft. Benning, GA. This company operates vending machines at Ft. Benning and Ft. Rucker, under contracts with the Post Exchange. In 1952, he expanded this business to Tyndall Air Force Base near Panama City, FL. Culpepper Vending Co., was sold in 1985 but is still operating under the same name... but new ownership. From 1951 until 1984 he was one of the incorporators of K & C Enterprises, Inc., operating seven snack drive-ins on the Ft. Benning Reservation under contract with the Post Exchange. Bob Culpepper was one of three incorporators of C.H.& B, Inc., doing business as the Daleville Inn Motel and Restaurant. This firm now owns the Colony Inn Motel and Restaurant in Enterprise. Culpepper founded the Aviation Center and Donnell Apartments., Inc., in Daleville. Mr. Culpepper owned many other businesses in the Daleville-Fort Rucker area.
