(This entry is puzzling as he is alone and only 12 years old. He is the only name on the page, and the preceding page has no apparent connection to him. Given the fact that he is listed as an idiot and blind, plus a relationship of "other", he is probably in an institution of some sort. A William, age 12, also appears in the census on page 39B as a son of William and Antoinette Culpepper in Deep Creek. These two 12-year-old Williams are presumed to be one ond the same.).

Research note* | December 2013 | From R. Kirk Culpepper: Is there any evidence that James E. Culpepper served in the Union Army before or during the Civil War? Local legend holds that the Culpeppers in this area formed a band of raiders that would attack Union trains at night, carry the goods to Longstreet in Suffolk and return to their farms the next day as if nothing had happened. There are old fortifications all along my property and neighbors properties that support attempts by the Union to protect their trains during taking on of water at the station. I noticed in 1862, James had a son he named George B. McClellan Culpepper. It would seem odd that at the beginning of the Civil War a Culpepper in this area would name their child after a Union General unless he somehow knew or served under him. Especially with the area being somewhat of a no man's land around here. R. Kirk Culpepper.9 |

The funeral will take place Sunday, December 30, 1906 at 3:00 pm in the Culpepper home, 43 Court Street. The Rev R.B. GARRETT, pastor of the Court Street Baptist Church, will conduct the service. The remains will be conveyed to the Cedar Grove Cemetery, where interment will take place. The funeral will be the largest, perhaps, that has ever been held in Portsmouth. Nearly every fraternal and fire man's organization in which he held membership will turn out to pay the last tribute to his memory. Out of courtesy to the Chambers Fire Company No 2, which claimed him as its surgeon, the other fire and hook and ladder companies in the Portsmouth fire department will attend the funeral in an imposing body. It is expected, also, that prominent Arcanumites from up state will be present at the obsequies. Red Men, Heptasophs and Elks will also do honor to the dead.8 |
