FatherJohn J. Culpepper of Jackson Co., FL (c 1817 - b 1880)

Burial*circa 21 January 1944 His body was interred circa 21 January 1944 at Philadelphia Methodist Cemetery, McDonough, Henry Co., Georgia.2
Biography* It is difficult to piece together a record of Columbus. There was a four month old unnamed infant listed in the 1860 census in the household of his mother, Elizabeth. The father, John J. Culpepper, is presumed to have died within the year, perhaps before Columbus was born. Elizabeth (Stallings) Culpepper and her now ten year old son have not been found in the 1870 census of Georgia although one of her sons was still living in Monroe Co., GA. Another son, Robert, was apparently in the process of moving from Monroe Co., GA to Henry Co., GA in 1870. Columbus has not been found in census records in either county. Perhaps he was living with his grandmother or with some other relative or perhaps the family was in the process of moving and was overlooked in the census. Finally, in the 1880 Henry Co., GA census, a 21 year old Columbus Culpepper was listed with his brother, Robert. This is presumed to be the name of the unnamed infant in the 1860 census. Since the 1890 U. S. census burned, it is difficult to follow Columbus. Also, unfortunately, another Columbus Culpepper, born in Georgia, complicates records but the other Columbus seems to have remained in Laurens Co., GA and he went by the names Columbus, Cal, and Ebenezer C. Culpepper. The son of John J. Culpepper appears to be the Columbus Culpepper recorded in the 1900 census of Henry Co., GA as a head-of-household with a wife and young family, unfortunately his date of birth is given as Feb 1862 which would not correspond with the 1860 census listing. However, this is the same county where the 21 year old Columbus was listed in 1880 census. Based on the age of his oldest child, Columbus must have married circa 1881, probably in Henry Co., GA but no record of this has been found.
