Died May 27, 1915 in Birmingham, AL from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Member of American Medical Association at time of death. JAMA obituary notice: Vol 64, page 2083. . The following death notice is from The Cullman Tribune of Cullman, AL, 27 May 1915: DR. J. W. CULPEPPER MET WITH FATAL ACCIDENT Tuesday When His Automobile Turned Over Into a Ditch on Third Street Resulting in His Death Thursday Morning. Dr. James W. Culpepper met with a deplorable accident on Tuesday about 1 o'clock, that resulted in the death of the well known and popular physician at the Davis infirmary in Birmingham Thursday morning at 9:45 o'clock. The accident which claimed this great man occurred when his automobile left the street and plunged into a ditch throwing the Doctor out of the car turning up on its side and falling on him from which he sustained the fatal injuries. Dr. Culpepper had left the People's Drug Store and was en route home for the noon hour meal. While driving rapidly in an old Hudson car and after turning over the hill from J. R. Griffin's store one of the cushions was about to fall out of the car and he reached down to pull in the cushion in place when he lost control of the car and almost in an instant the car was plunged into the ditch on the north side of Third street in front of J. F. Weeks store. Mr. Weeks who witnessed the sad accident rushed to the rescue of Dr. Culpepper and as best he could assisted the Doctor up out of the ditch on to the bank where Dr. Culpepper made a thorough examination of his injuries the second time and then remarked to Mr. Weeks "I am a dead man, send for my wife at once." Kind and sympathetic friends gathered around to do whatever was within their power and Drs. Hays, Martin, McAdore and Thurlow at once rushed to the side of the Doctor to give whatever assistance that could within the skill of medical science. The injured man was carried to the Cullman Sanitarium and after an examination by the attending physicians it was decided to carry him to Birmingham where a more thorough examination could be made with the X Ray and if possible something done that would save his life. Accompanied by Mrs. Culpepper, Drs. Hays, McAdore, Thurlow and Otis Kinney he was carried to Birmingham on the evening accommodation and on Wednesday morning the X Ray examination made, but it was found that his condition and injuries were such that an operation would be of no avail as the left hip was crushed all to pieces and he [was] badly injured internally. The Doctor lingered between life and death until Thursday morning when his spirit of life was wafted to the great physician in the great beyond. The remains accompanied by relatives and friends were brought to Cullman Thursday afternoon and Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock the funeral services will be conducted at the Baptist church after which the body will be laid to rest in the city cemetery. No death has ever occurred in our county that was more universal[ly] deplored for Dr. Culpepper was a man held in the highest by all who knew him. His wonderful skill and success as a physician was such as to demand all of his timely, rarely ever stopping day or night, it making no difference from whom the call came for assistance, whether great or small, he was ever ready to answer the summon, his life being in his work of doing whatever was within his power for elevating and helping suffering humanity. This great physician and kind hearted gentleman will be sadly missed by not only his dear family but by hundreds of people throughout the county. Dr. Culpepper was near[ly] 39 years old, and is survived by a widow and two sons, Wallace and Voight, father and mother Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. Culpepper of Crane, four sisters, Mrs. Lena May Price, Mrs. Sally Land and Mrs. Lillie Tucker of Crane Hill; and Mrs. Hnlen Birch [read H. L. (Ellen) Burch] of Florida; two brothers, J. P. Culpepper of Crane Hill, and Dr. R. A. Culpepper of Chicago. The following funeral announcement is from an unknown source: D I E D In Birmingham, Ala., at 9:45 o'clock a. m. Thursday morning, May 27th, 1915, DR. JAMES W. CULPEPPER. Funeral from the Baptist Church, Friday atternoon, May 28th, 1915, at 3 o'clock p. m., conducted by Rev. W. P. Wilks. | Biography* | The following if from pp. 271-272 of the History of Alabama Rufus A. Culpepper, M. D. Since graduating from medical college Doctor Culpepper has practiced in Cullman County, most of the time at the City of Cullman. He has a record of service overseas during the World war, being a medical officer on the battle lines and with the Army of Occupation in Germany. Doctor Cullpepper [Culpepper] was born in Merriweather [Meriwether] County Georgia December 6, 1887. His father, Thomas J. Culpepper, was born in the same county, June 5, 1847, was reared and married there, and throughout his active career followed the vocation of farmer. In 1892 he moved to Cullman County, Alabama, and was one of the solid men of agriculture in that county until September 20, 1920. He was a democrat and a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and served the last two years of the Civil War as a Confederate soldier. His wife, Lola Boyd, was born in Merriweather [Meriwether] County December 3, 1852, and now resides at Cullman. They had a family of seven children: James William was a physician and surgeon and died at Cullman at the age of thirty nine; Lena Mae, married Dr. William H. Price, a physician and surgeon, and both died at Cullman; Lillie is the wife of Clinton Tucker, of Sarasota, Florida; Doctor Rufus A; and Ellen is the wife of Homer Burch, an employee of Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railway Company at Fairfield, Alabama. Rufus A. Culpepper was five years of age when brought to Cullman County, grew up on his father's farm there and supplemented his training in public schools by attending the preparatory department of the University of Chattanooga at Athens, Tennessee. He took his first year in medicine at the Chattanooga Medical College, spent two years in the Birmingham Medical College and finished his course in the Chicago College of Medicine, being graduated with the M. D. degree in 1914. He is a member of the Phi Chi medical fraternity. Doctor Culpepper after graduating returned to Cullman County and for one year practiced at Crane Hill. Since then his home and offices have been in Cullman, and he has been granted a generous share of the professional practice in that community. His offices are in the People's Drug Store Building on First Avenue. Doctor Culpepper is a member of the Cullman County and Alabama Medical Associations, is a Fellow of the American Medical Association and was a volunteer for service in the Medical Corps during the World war. He was commissioned a first lieutenant March 1, 1918, was trained at Base Hospital at Camp Travis, Texas, and went overseas as a casual, landing at Brest August 11, 1918. As a member of the Tenth Field Artillery in the Third Division he was in the St. Mihiel and Meuse Argonne campaign and accompanied the Third Division of the Army of Occupation stationed at Mayhen, Germany. He remained overseas until August 10, 1919, when he sailed for home and received his honorable discharge at Camp Gordon, Atlanta, October 6, 1919. After an absence of over a year he again resumed his professional work at Cullman. Doctor Culpepper is a democrat, is a member of the Missionary Baptist Church and is affiliated with Cullman Fraternal Lodge No. 421, F. and A. M., Alabama Consistory of the Scottish Rite at Birmingham, and Zamora Temple of the Mystic Shrine at Birmingham. He is a member of the Cullman Kiwanis Club. He married at St. Louis, Missouri, June 27, 1923, Miss Annie Catherine Arndt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Arndt. Her father was a farmer, and died in Cullman County, and her mother still lives there. Mrs. Culpepper is a graduate nurse. The following funeral notice is from Cullman Tribune: 25 Jun 1969 Funeral Services Will Be Today Dr. Culpepper Dies At The Age of 81 Dr. Rufus Alva Culpepper, 81, a prominent Cullman, medical doctor, died in the Cullman Hospital, Monday, June 23, Dr. Culpepper was a native of Meriweather County, Georgia. He came with his parents to the Crane Hill Community at the age of five. Following his high school education, Dr. Culpepper attended the preparatory department of the University of Chattanooga. His first year of medicine was at Chattanooga Medical College. He then attended Birmingham Medical College for two years and graduated from Chicago College of Medicine in 1914. He then opened a office in Cullman. When, World War I broke out, Dr. Culpepper volunteered for service in the Medical Corps, where he was commissioned a first lieutenant in 1918. He was honorably discharged in Oct. 1919. He then returned to Cullman where he retired from practice due to ill health in March, 1969. Dr. Culpepper was a member of Phi Chi Medical Fraternity, was a mason, member of the Missionary Baptist Church, the Elks, American Legion, Kiwanis, Cullman County Medical Society and was on the staff at Cullman Hospital. Dr. Culpepper's funeral will be held today, June 25, 4 p.m., from Moss Service Funeral Home Chapel, with burial to follow in Memory Gardens, with Moss Service Funeral Home directing. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Velma Culpepper; three sisters, Mrs. Sallie Land, Mrs. Lillie Tucker and Mrs. Ellen Burch; and one brother, Tom P. Culpepper. |

I am including some information about George Green Culpepper, youngest son of George Washington Culpepper, and father of Florence Virginia Culpepper Johnson, my mother. Also included are some excerpts from a booklet compiled by students, associates and friends of my mother titled "WIT AND WISDOM OF FLORENCE C. JOHNSON", that shows that she carried on the Culpepper traits of wit and wisdom. From the three issues of "The Crystal" Mother's, Margaret's and Eleanor's college annuals, I have copied the pages that reference them.... Getting to my mother, Florence Virginia Culpepper, there was virtually nothing that she couldn't do. She was a teacher, excellent cook, an artist, a poet, an athlete, played the piano, could sew, had beautiful flowers and garden, she could wire a lamp, refinish furniture, shoot a gun, name the constellations in the sky, she could name all the trees, weeds, wild flowers, snakes, lizards, birds; these were some of her talents. Florence Virginia Culpepper was born May 8, 1907 in Meriwether County Ga. Baptized October, 1916 Old Prospect Methodist Church, Lone Oak, Ga. Died August 5, 1967 in hospital, LaGrange, Ga. Buried at Allen Lee Memorial United Methodist Church, Lone Oak, Ga. She married George Warren Johnson May 30, 1937 in Atlanta, Ga. She graduated from the Georgia State Teachers College in Athens Ga in 1927 with an AB degree in Education with her major in math. She attended summer school at the University of Virginia to study higher mathematics in the early 1930's. In 1957 she attended summer school at the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga. for more courses in the newer math that was emerging in school curriculum. The following is from a 1958 issue of the Hogansville Herald courtesy of Mrs. Wayne (Rosalind Johnson) Edmondson: Mrs. Johnson Is 'Teacher of Year' Mrs. Warren Johnson, high school mathematics teacher, has been elected by her fellow teachers as Hogansville's "Teacher of The Year" for 1958. Mrs. Johnson, an unassuming mother of three, has carried the main portion of the mathematics load at Hogansville High School since 1946. A popular figure of the campus, Mrs. Johnson has made her influence felt in many ways besides in the classroom Mrs. Johnson was Florence Culpepper before her marriage. She attended a two-teacher ungraded school in the country near Lone Oak, where her people have lived for generations. With that thorough background she went on to finish her last two years of high school at State Normal in Athens. She then entered Georgia State Teachers College in Athens and hers was the last class to graduate before that school was made part of the University. Her first teaching job was in Luthersvll!e for two years and then she went to West Point for seven years. In 1937 she married Warren Johnson of Hogansville and taught one year before dropping out to start a family. She came back into teaching in 1946 and has taught continuously since that time. She is the mother of Nancy Grace Johnson, sophomore in college; Rosalind Johnson, junior in high school, and Bill Johnson, seventh grader. Mathematics has always been her major teaching field. She has also done some work in Physical Education. To add to her college work she attended the University of Virginia for two summers. Florence Johnson is first and foremost a dedicated teacher. She is known as one of the best mathematics teachers in this part of the country in spite of mathematics being a field in which women do not often excel. She is beloved and respected by the girls and boys in her class. Discipline comes natural to her; she holds her class through interest in the work and good fellowshlp rather than force. All boys and many glrls are called by their last names in her classes. Her abrupt but friendly manner and her ever-present sense of humor keep a natural easy atmosphere in her classroom. She has always expected and demanded a great deal from her students, prodding the brilliant to live up to their potential and showny [slowly?] with the slow to help them to catch on. Students always consider Mrs. Johnson fair and open-minded on any question pertaining to either classwork or outside problems. Athletics has always been interesting to Mrs. Johnson. As a young teacher, she taught physical education along with mathematics, and she has never stopped taking part in the athletic program. She can stlll outrun any girl in her classroom and sometimes proves it when she is getting them ready for an intramural track meet. This tendency to get close to the students through their athletic interests has continued through the years and is part of her secret of getting more out of them in the classroom. Over the years, she has assisted basketball coaches, played informal games during off periods, and is now a regular sponsor for the cheerleaders. In the last capacity she rides with players and cheerleaders on the bus to every out-of-town game. Here, as everywhere, she demands and gets the highest in personal behavior. Mrs. Johnson also helps with the senior program at the end of school, sometimes going on the senior trlp. At the same time she has managed to rear her own youngsters to the advantage or all concerned, in spite of a full schedule. Her interest in the morals of her students is one of the most valuable points of Mrs. Johnson as a teacher. Many a father or mother has called to ask her to talk to their child, or to say a word in his behalf if he were in trouble. All her students have felt that she had their real interest at heart and this has been one or her strongest ties with the students. In late years, when Mrs. Johnson has had advanced geometry students but not enough hours in the day to teach them, she has combined plane and solid geometry classes, the latter using the floor at the back of the room for a blackboard to work out their problems. Always by that time she and her advanced pupils are on such a firm footing that she can handle the two classes in the same hour with no trouble. Top Math Students Hogansville takes great pride in the achievement of its mathematics students in college and later life. Many have been placed in merit classes in college and in special advanced courses in the service. Two of her mathematics students have won four-year scholarships through competitive examinations. Her former pupils make a practice of reporting to her their progress and how much she helped them. Outside Activities Her school work comes first but she has also found time for church work, Boy Scout work and Girl Scout work. She has been very active in the Community Improvement Club; she is a teacher of a Sunday School Class at the First Methodist Church. Florence has been a member of the Garden Club. She has applied for a summer scholarship in mathematics at the University of North Carolina. She is a strong advocate of meetings with other mathematics teachers at GEA and always brings back new ideas. Florence Johnson is modest almost to the point of withdrawal from public limelight, and yet her presence has always been felt in all school and community activities. A youthful, slender and neat-appearing person, she has the selfless air of a real teacher, concerned mainly with the problems of others. She keeps a firm grasp on three main purposes in life--being a good teacher, a good wife and mother, and strong moral influence on young people. It is with great pride that Hogansville offers Mrs. Warren Johnson as Teacher of the Year for 1958. The following is from the LaGrange Daily News Saturday 5 Aug 1967: Prominent Teacher Dies Today Mrs. Warren Johnson, 60, Hogansville High School teacher died at City County Hospital Saturday morning following an illness of several months. A teacher for the Hogansville School system for the past 20 years, she had taught in West Point for nine years prior. She was graduate of the University of Georgia and was active in the WSCS and First Methodist Church of Hogansville. She was the daughter of the late George Culpepper and Grace Herring Culpepper, members of prominent and pioneer families of Meriwether County Mrs. Johnson was a native of Meriwether County having spent most of her life in this area. She was the Star Teacher for the years of 1959, '61, '64 and '66 with the Hogansville High School Annual being dedicated to her in 1965. She was the Teacher of the Year in 1958 and 59 and honor teacher of the Honor Council in 1964 and '65. Survivors are her husband, Warren Johnson of Hogansville; two daughters, Mrs. Norman Gray of Fayetteville and Miss Rosalind Johnson of Atlanta; one son G. Warren Johnson Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla; and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at the chapel of the Claude A. McKibben Funeral Home in Hogansville conducted by Rev. Kenneth Culp assisted by Rev. Donald Folsom. Burial will be in the Allen-Lee Memorial Methodist Church Cemetery at Lone Oak. The body of Mrs. Johnson will be at Claude A. McKibben Funeral Home in Hogansville. |

Culpepper was 85 years old at the time the article was written, it was presumably written in 1975: Tiftonite Banker Is Named Outstanding Alumnus CARROLLTON, Ga. -- An 85-year-old Tifton banker was named Outstanding Alumnus of the Fourth District Agricultural and Mechanical School (the predecessor of modern day West Georgia College) during the, school's recent reunion on the WGC campus. C. B. Culpepper, who graduated from the A&M School in 1910, and later attended the University of Georgia, has worked at the Farmers Bank of Tifton since April, 1951, and still goes to work every day. Born June 10,1890, in Luthersville, Ga., Culpepper was the son of James Elijah and Susie Scoggins Culpepper. His early school years were spent in a three-room schoolhouse in Luthersville. While working in a cotton field in the heat of the summer one year, Culpepper was approached by J. H. Melson, then principal of the A&M School. Melson persuaded Culpepper to sign up for classes at the Carrollton school in the fall of 1908. In Culpepper's graduating class, there were six boys and two girls. After his years at the University, where Culpepper played freshman football and farmed to pay expenses, Dooley County called upon him to be that county's farm demonstrator, a title that later became county agent. Culpepper has served as president of the County Agents Association, along with being a director of that organization. He served on the Farm Advisory Board during World War II, and received a United War Fund Citation for meritorious service selling war bonds and a certificate from the American National Red Cross for service during the war. In July, 1950, Culpepper was honored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture with an award for superior service in improving methods of cultivation, fertilization and seed selection in Tift County, assisting the state and federal governments, rejuvenating the peach industry, improving swine and dairy herds and working with the 4-H Clubs. He was the only county agent honored with this award. Culpepper married Ethel L. Smith, of Rochelle, Ga., on January 29, 1916. She died one month before their 58th wedding anniversary. Culpepper has three daughters -- Mrs. Suzie Huff of Athens, Mrs. Marion Whidden and Mrs. Margaret Bergeron, both of Tifton. The citation awarded Culpepper noted that "Mr. Cully," as he is called, "touched many lives and left each a little richer for having known him..." Of all his accomplishments, Mr. Cully cites three that are most important to him: the love of his family, working with people, especially boys and girls, and his reputation as the best bream fisherman in South Georgia. ----------------------------------------- The following interview with C. B. Culpepper took place some time during or after the drought of 1977. The article was written by Nancy Smith "Gazette Staff Writer" possibly for a Tift County paper. Former County Agent Recalls Drought of '54 More Devastating The drought of 1954 had much more disastrous effects than that of 1977, according to a former Tift County Extension Agent. C. B. Culpepper, who worked with the extension service here from l927 until 1954, said farmers in '54 "didn't make anything." "A lot of people didn't even go out in the field to harvest their corn or peanuts," Culpepper recalled. "It was a complete disaster. This year, at least, farmers had some irrigation and didn't lose every single crop." Drawing on his experiences, Culpepper made several other "then and now" comparisons about Tift County agriculture. Listing price supports and loans available to modern farmers, he explained the Depression marked the beginning of such federal assistance "The Triple-A program tried to reduce surplus by plowing up acres of cotton tobacco and peanuts," he said "Everybody was broke, nearly, so the government started reimbursing farmers for the land they plowed under creating the seed and feed loans and later, the production credit association. At that time, Culpepper said the government paid farmers $20 per acre for tobacco, $8 per acre for sweet potatoes, and $6 per acre for corn or cotton. "$20 wouldn't even pay for gas to lay an acre of tobacco with now," he pointed out. Other programs during the Depression included the "live-at-home" campaign and the mattress effort, he said. The live-at-home program encouraged people to cultivate gardens and raise chicken at home thus increasing self-reliance while the mattress program sought to utilize cotton supplies and improve living conditions. "The government furnished cotton and ticking, and sent a group to teach people how to make mattresses," he said. "They used 500 bales of cotton in Tift County -- and everybody got a good mattress to sleep on." During his first few years of working in Tift County, buggies and wagons -- and a few automobiles -- provided transportation. "We had hitching racks behind stores, so people could tie their mules while they shopped," he said. "And at the corner of the courthouse, where the eternal flame is now, we had a drinking fountain for people to water their stock with when they came in to town. Yes sir, we were really fixed," he chuckled. Culpepper is thankful for most of the changes in agriculture. "Mechanization has taken a lot of the labor out of farming," he explained. "Where they were using mules and horses to farm with before, now they're using machinery. And instead of planting one row of corn at a time, they're planting four or six." Fertilizer and insecticide was applied by hand in earlier days, and "we didn't have as many insects as we do now." Arsenate of lead was the major pesticide, and "they'd use a number three tin can with holes in the bottom to shake it out over their fields," he said. The Rural Electric Administration "took a lot of drudgery" out of farm living, he said. "After they got electricity out in the county, people started getting refrigerators and stoves." During World War II, farmers were faced with a massive labor shortage. "We had a program to get our local labor to help farmers harvest their crops," Culpepper said. "In 1944, 150 prisoners of war were brought in to help Tift County farmers stack [sack?] peanuts." And Culpepper remembers William Pool's arrival in 1948. "He was my assistant for two years, and -- after working with me -- he made a real fine extension agent," he grinned. "I really liked him. We never even had a fuss -- although we might've looked at each other mean once or twice!" "The people here gave me a lot more than I gave them. They were very cooperative and kind, and I'm proud they allowed me to serve them for 24 years," he said. Another source of pride to the former extension agent is that farmers are no longer treated as second-class citizens. "They have as much prestige now as any other businessman, and live in much better conditions than they used to," he said. Mr. Culpepper was farm consultant for the Farmers Bank of Tifton, was county agent for 37 years, had been associated with the Farmers Bank since l951, was, an honorary member of Rotary International, served on the board of the Tift General Hospital, and was graduated from the 4th District A&M School in Carrollton, Ga. He attended tbe University of Georgia. Mr. Culpepper was presented an award for superior service from the U. S. Secretary of Agriculture on July 1, 1950 for his work in improving farming methods in his county and for his work with 4-H Clubs. In 1975, he was named as the outstanding alumnus from the 4th District, A&M School. He was the widower of Mrs. Ethel Smith Culpepper. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Marion C. Whiddon and Mrs. Margaret Bergeron, both of Tifton and Mrs. Suzan Huff of Piedmont, S. C; four grandchildren and five great great-grandchildren. Born in Luthersville, she was a daughter of the late Clarence Boozer and Ethel Smith Culpepper. She grew up in Tifton, was formerly of Athens, where she was a member of Tuckston Methodist Church, and was a retired teacher, having taught with the Walton County School System. She was a member of the Simpsonville Garden Club, the Retired Military Officers' Wives Club, the Daughters of the American Revolution, Snow Campaign Chapter and Simpsonville United Methodist Church. Surviving are daughter, Libbi Huff of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Penny and Don Hawthorne of Piedmont; sisters, Marion C. Whiddon, Margaret C. Bergeron, both of Tifton; grandchildren, Heather Hawthorne, Beau Hawthorne, both of Piedmont, and Betsy Grady of Savannah; and great-grandchildren, Zachary and Zayne of Piedmont. Funeral services will be held at 11 a. m. today at Simpsonville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. M. Cooper Stonestreet and the Rev. A. Judson King officiating. | Biography* | The following is from an unknown source: IN MEMORIUM James R. Huff, Chairman of the Greenville Soil and Water Conservation District, died at his home on W. Georgia Road on January 6, 1985. Roscoe, as many of his local friends knew him, served as an associate commissioner for two years before being elected in a county-wide contest to a four year term of office. He had served two years of this term at the time of his death. Roscoe retired from the Soil Conservation Service after 35 years of government service. Twenty-four years of this time were spent at the State office of SCS in Athens, GA. Five years ago, he returned to his ancestral home in the Saint Albans Community where he quickly became involved in church and community affairs. He served his country in both World War II and the Korean War. A geologist by profession, he had a lifelong fascination with and love of the soil. After a determined fight against cancer, he died in the same house in which he was born. He was buried with full military rites, in the family cemetery on land which has been in the Huff family for 164 years. Roscoe's life exemplified the hardy pioneer stock of his forebears and his influence will long endure. We join with his family in mourning the loss of husband, parent, associate and friend. The following obituary is from an unknown source: JAMES R. HUFF Piedmont. James Roscoe Huff, 68, of Rt 4, West Georgia Rd., died Sunday night at his home, Cureton-Huff Homeplace. He was the son of the late Swan Burdette and Meda Hunt Huff, a graduate of St. Albans High School, Class of 1933. He received his B.S. Degree in Soils and Agronomy from Clemson University in 1938 and his M.S. Degree in Soils and Geology from Clemson in 1956. He served in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations during World War II in the Corps. of Engineers and in the Korean Conflict and retired as Lt. Colonel in the Army Reserves. He was a Geologist with the Watershed Planning Staff of the United States Dept. of Agriculture, Soil Conservation Service, Athens, Ga. for 24 years. After his retirement in 1973, he was a Consulting Geologist in Engineering Geology. He was a member of Association of Engineering GeologistJames Roscoe Huff, Charter Member of Georgia Geological Society, Charter member of Soil Conservation Society of America, Secretary of National Association of Federal Employees, Chairman of Greenville County Soil and Water Commission. He was a member of Palmetto Rock and Mineral Club, a member of the official Board of Simpsonville United Methodist Church and the Douglas Bible Class. Surviving are his wife, Suzan Culpepper Huff of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Don B. She graduated in 1941 with a degree in Home Economics.Shortly thereafter, she began her teaching career in Cochran, GA. On March 17, 1944, she married her high school sweetheart, Harold, who at that time was a B17 pilot with the Army Air Corp serving during WWII.After teaching in the Tifton Public Schools for 30 years, she decided to retire in 1980. At that time she became very active in her church and community. Her church, her family, and her community were very important to her.She had been a member of Tifton First United Methodist Church for 86 years. She served on the Administrative Board, was a member of the United Methodist Women, and was treasurer for the Christian Covenant Sunday School Class for many years. As treasurer, she encouraged her class to give to many charitable organizations. One year her class gave over $14,000 to different groups. One member of her class stated, that we were all seniors on fixed incomes but if Marion said give, we gave. She participated in almost every activity the church had and never said no to any job she was asked to complete. She also became very active in her community. She was a member of the Twentieth Century Library Club, where she served as President and Chairman of the Education Committee. As chairman of this committee, she organized members to go once a month to read aloud to the students at Head Start and to make sure each child received a new book for Christmas. Each year, she was honored to help select two deserving High School Seniors to receive the Woman's Club annual Scholarships. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Club 55, Retired Teachers, several Bridge Clubs, and Special Olympics where she served on the Board of Directors as Treasurer and was a proud volunteer. Her special love was the Meals on Wheels Program. For 33 years she worked with Meals on Wheels. She was first a volunteer and then became the Director of Volunteers and the Director of Eligibility. She would always find a way to qualify a person in need whether they could pay or not. She felt that everyone deserved a hot meal each day.Some of her community awards include: 1992 George A. They needed pilots fast, so he was in the first group of pilots to complete training in 6 months. He also flew into Oran, Dakar, Accra, Marrakech, Casablanca, and even Cairo, Egypt. He once stayed at the French Foreign Legion Post #17 in the desert. He carried medical, food and war supplies as well as paratroopers and VIP's. He was awarded the Air Medal for Meritorious Achievement for flying over Sicily. He once flew General Patton on a hunting trip to North Africa, and USO entertainer, Martha Rae for a troop performance. Miss Rae insisted on sitting with the pilots, to "help them".1 |

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Albritton Funeral Directors with the Rev. Benjy Varnell and the Rev. Jay Roberson officiating. Interment will follow at Oakridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:45 p.m. Friday before the service at the funeral home. Active pallbearers are Bill Vance, Harvey Hatcher, Walter Stephens, Cecil Hutchinson, Matt Rhodes, J.H. White, Richard Burton and Jimmy Deal. The Christian Covenant Sunday school class will serve as honorary pallbearers. Margaret, known to her family and friends as Tunkey, was born Oct. 28, 1923 in Cordele to the late C.B. (Boozer) and Ethel Smith Culpepper. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert (Bob) Eldridge Bergeron, who died in 2005; and her sisters, Susie Culpepper Huff and Marion Culpepper Whiddon. Tunkey moved to Tifton in 1927 when she was four years old. She attended the Tifton schools and graduated with the class of 1940 from Tifton High School. After graduation, she attended Valdosta State College for Women and graduated in 1944 with a degree in elementary education. Tunkey began her 30-year teaching career in Tifton. On Nov. 1, 1952, she married Bob, her husband of 53 years, whom she met in first grade. During that time, she continued her teaching career in Tifton, Valdosta, Albany and Anchorage, Alaska, following Bob from base to base as his career in the Air Force required. In 1964, Bob retired from the military and they settled back in Tifton. Tunkey taught at Spencer Elementary until her retirement in 1980. Because she had no children of her own, she loved each and every student as they belonged to her. When she retired, she loved telling stories of her many years in the classroom and seeing her former students. After her retirement, she became very active in her church and community. For 25 years, she delivered Meals on Wheels and served as director of eligibility, was on the board of directors and volunteered with Special Olympics, served on the education committee for the 20th Century Woman’s Club and was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Retired Teachers and Club 55. Tunkey was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church of Tifton, a member and for many years president of the Christian Covenant Sunday school class and a teacher and leader of her Circle of United Methodist Women. She was awarded the Georgia A. Wright Memorial Award in 2010 and given special recognition for her work in Special Olympics in 2013. She is survived by her nieces and nephew, Margaret and Gary Powers of Lilburn, Penny Huff Hawthorne and Libbi Huff of Simpsonville, S.C. and Robert Whiddon of Durham, N.C; and several great- and great-great-nieces and nephews.2 |
