Biography* | | Tessie was the last born child of William Jehu and Josephine East Culpepper. She had a number of siblings near her age and a number who were old enough to be her parents. She learned her lessons well as far a managing a home. At the time of the death of Josephine Tessie and William Jehu remained as the sole inhabitants of the home. She was very proud of the many lovely flowers she grew which surrounded her home.
She married Thomas Van Buron Reeves on January 4, 1921. They were the parents of five children. The priorities of family and a God-Centered life were of ultimate importance to Tessie and Thomas.
Tessie was quite artistic in her activities. This ranged from decorating her food dishes, making her own patterns and sewing clothes for the family, making costumes for school functions and making quilts and crochet. Adding her passion for growing lovely flowers, it is understandable that her dai
In the mid-1890's, her parents moved the family from Arkansas to Hopkins Co., TX and this is where Tessie was born and where she was noted with her parents in 1910 census records and with her widowed father in 1920 census records.
A daughter, Mrs. R. W. (Tommie Reeves) Smith, visited with Mattie Mae (East) Hancock, the daughter of a half-brother of Tessie's mother, Emily Julia Ann Josephine (East) Culpepper who told of the East family coming to Texas and how Tessie came to meet her future husband:4
She reports that the family moved to Texas [from Alabama] with a short hiatus in Arkansas when her mother was about 18 and the year approximately 1880. They settled near Coolidge, Texas on property owned by "Uncle" Jim Armour (no relation). They were cotton buyers. This Mae (East) Hancock and her brother Tom were frequent visitors to Billy and Josephine Culpepper's home. It was Mae who knew both my mother and my father and who introduced them.
Tommie added:5
The wife of Thomas Elias [East, Josephine East's half-brother] was Nannie Jane Childers. Her father, John, was a step son to my Reeves gr-grandfather James Marion Reeves. My parents, Tessie Culpepper and Thomas Reeves met because of this small relationship.
In 1921, Tessie married Thomas Van Buron Reeves and they settled down to farm and raise their family in Pine Forest, Hopkins Co., TX. The Reeves, Caldwell, DeVore, Smith & Smith families included a tribute to their parents in their 1981 holiday letter:
Over the years, as the Holy Season approached, one of the biggest pleasures for this family was the giving and receiving of Christmas greetings. Many times are remembered as we were doing our chores when the mail came Mother would say, "Let's stop now and read the cards." We would sit in a circle and pass them around like the presents that they were.... The single most important force in the lives of our parents was their faith in God and the true meaning of the Christmas Season.
Tessie lost her husband of 49 years in 1970. She died in 1981 at the age of 80. |

He was born and raised in Hopkins Co., TX where he was noted living with his parents in 1910 and 1920 census records. Since, according to Social Security records, Pete had a Railroad Retiree number issued before 1951, he must have worked for a railroad, presumably before World War II.
According to his son, Joe, Pete was a career Army man. He would have been 33 years old when the United States entered World War II on December 8, 1941. In 1942, Pete married Maurice Ernestine Dulin and then went off to war. In 1943, Pete lost an eye while opening a box of grenades for his platoon while training for the invasion of Normandy.10 After the War, Pete was stationed at Fort Dix, NJ and then he was assigned to the 4th Army in San Antonio, TX.10 In 1947, Pete received a medical discharge from the Army as a Top Sergeant.10
Pete and his wife then settled down to raise their young family in the San Antonio, TX area, both finding work as civilians for nearby Kelly Air Force Base and then Brooks Air Force Base.10 Pete retired from Civil Service and died in San Antonio, TX at the age of 71. |
