She was born 8 Mar 1906 in Hopkins County, the daughter of Luther Culpepper and Annie Forgy. She married J.R. Irby. He preceded her in death. Survivors include seven children, Reta Freeman and Harold Irby, both of Miller Grove, Helen Berry of Bryan, Annie Mills of Miami, Ok, Betty Reeves of Kingman, Arizona, Peggy Smith of New Orleans, LA and Jerry Irby of North Carolins: 22 grandchildren, and several great granchildren and great-great-grandchildren. | Biography* | Harry Culpepper was the son of Capos Conley and Lou Anna Augusta (Atchley) Culpepper. He was named for his grandfathers, John Malcolm Culpepper and James Harrison Atchley. 6 Although he was born in Texas, his parents moved the family to Arkansas while he was still an infant and this is where he grew up and was noted with his parents in 1910 and 1920 census records. He attended Oak Grove School, near Sheridan, AR. 7 In 1925, Harry married Wilma Stuckey and they settled down to farm and raise their family near Sheridan, AR. However, around 1930, Harry moved his young family to Pine Bluff, AR and he joined the Fire Department there and worked his way up to the rank of Captain.7 He was also a member of the Jacob-Brump Masonic Lodge there.7 Around 1954, Harry "retired" and he and his wife returned to the Oak Grove Community where he bought a Groundhog Sawmill which he operated until 1962. He was also a co-owner of a logging company. 7 Harry was active in his church. He served as a Trustee and as a member of the Board of Stewards of the Center Grove Methodist Church where he helped to establish the Center Grove Cemetery.7 Harry and his wife also installed carpeting in the sanctuary of the church and, after his wife's death, Harry arranged to have cushions installed in the church pews in her memory.7 Harry was active in the community as well. In 1964, he was elected Justice of the Peace for the Washington-Simpson Townships and he continued to be reelected to the office until his death.7 He also helped organize the Center Grove R.C.I. Club and he helped obtain property for and build the Center Grove Community Center and he served on its Board. Obviously, with his background, Harry helped organize the Center Grove Volunteer Fire Department and served as the first Fire Chief helping to build a building to house the equipment and later serving on the Fire Department Board.7 Harry also served as a member of the Grant County Fair Board for 23 years. After his death, the Board established a Memorial College fund in recognition of Harry's service to the community. From it, a scholarship is to be awarded each year to "a senior of any of the schools in Grant County who participated in the Grant County Fair during the previous five years by showing an article of their work, or an animal in the Fair."7 Capos Conley "Chip" Culpepper, II, wrote of his memories of his uncle Harry:8 He always had a "see-gar" clenched in his teeth, or a "chaw" of tobacco tucked in his cheek, and I don't think I ever saw him without a hat... usually a John Deere cap or a straw hat.... He was quite a character, and was always quick with a joke or funny story -- usually at my dad's [Conley Edward Culpepper's] expense. Harry's wife of 59 years died in 1984. Harry died in 1986 at the age of 81. |

| Biography* | W. Jay Culpepper was the son of Capos Conley and Lou Anna Augusta (Atchley) Culpepper. He was born and raised in Arkansas where he was noted with his parents in 1920 census records. In 1938, he married Irene Blackwell and, based on the birth locations of their children, they spent the early years of their marriage in Louisiana before returning to Arkansas. Jay served in the U.S. Navy.3 He later worked at the Pine Bluff Arsenal from which he retired.3 He also was an artist and a commercial sign writer.3 Jay was active in his church and community. He was a charter member of Center Grove United Methodist Church.3 And he was a member of Sheridan Masonic Lodge No. 260, Eastern Star Sheridan Chapter No. 212, Knights Templar, and Sahara Temple of Pine Bluff, AR.3 W. Jay Culpepper died in 1997 a day after his 81st birthday. |

Born March 26, 1924 in rural Grant County, near Sheridan, Ark., he was the youngest of the large family born to the late Capos Conley Culpepper and Lou Anna Augusta Atchley Culpepper. A career forester and a naturally gifted botanist, he earned his degree in the fledgling forestry program at Arkansas A&M (now University of Arkansas at Monticello) under the benefits of the G.I. Bill. He supervised the logging crews that harvested timber on land which now forms Lake Ouachita. During World War II, he served in the 100th Bomb Group of the 8th Army Air Force. He completed 35 combat bombing missions over Germany as flight engineer and top-turret gunner aboard a B-17G "Flying Fortress" heavy bomber. He achieved the rank of Technical Sergeant. Along with his aerial gunnery wings, he was awarded the Air Medal and the Europe-Middle East-Africa Campaign Medal. He was a member of Owensville Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher for many years. A 32nd Degree Mason, he was also an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, the former Delphia Jane Ashley and their seven sons and six daughters-in-law, Eddie and Susan Culpepper of Hot Springs Village, Kent Culpepper, Jack and Janie Culpepper, Scott and mary Culpepper, and Charles and Theresa Culpepper, all of Hot Springs, Mark and Angela Culpepper of Lonsdale, and C.C. "Chip" and Karen Culpepper of Little Rock. He is also survived by his brother, Oscar N. Culpepper of Little Rock, and a sister, Joyce West of Waxahatchie, Texas. Other survivors include 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and by brothers, J. Harry Culpepper, W. Jay Culpepper, and Sid Culpepper; and by sisters, Lillian Williams, Ruby Moore and Opal Culpepper. Pallbearers are Mark deLinde, Tommy James, Rick Merryman, Bob Nichols, Andy Westerman and Bruce Westerman. Honorary pallbearers are Ray Lawson, Art Tuma, Roy Murphy, Paul Dahl, Harold McAlpine, Jerry Billings, George Johnston, Ted Chancey, Bob Gierow, Jerry Bryant and James Adair. | Biography* | Conley Edward Culpepper was the son of Capos Conley and Lou Anna Augusta (Atchley) Culpepper. He was born and raised in Arkansas and grew up during the Great Depression. Conley recalled being fascinated by plants even as a child. When his parents took him on long hunting trips, he recalled being more interested in the plants than the animals.5 Conley was seventeen years old when the United States entered World War II. Tom Brokaw wrote The Greatest Generation in homage to those from this generation who sacrificed so much for their country and the world. As did many from this generation, Conley had to grow up fast. He served with the 8th Army Air Corps - 100th Bomb Group.6 Harry H. Crosby, lead navigator in the 100th Bomb Group, wrote A Wing and a Prayer: The "Bloody 100th" Bomb Group of the U.S. Eighth Air Force in Action over Europe in World War II. 7 After training, they were sent to England in 1943. Dr. Crosby noted that the group started earning its "Bloody 100th" nickname when the first crew was lost to enemy fire while on a practice run before the first mission had been flown, then six more crews were lost over Bremen, a squadron over Frankfurt, three planes survived a shuttle mission to Regensburg and only one returned from Muenster. The Group lost 15 of 35 bombers sent to bomb Berlin in March of 1944. Unfortunately, since we lived some 50-plus miles away from his farm and only visited it on weekends, his prized irises started being pilfered one-by-one. The following article, from the records of Chip Culpepper, appeared in the December 1970 issue of the Arkansas-Oklahoma regional edition of the Weyerhaeuser Company newspaper. Chip's comments: " I remember going with my Dad (probably this year [1970]) to get the State Christmas Tree, although he did it for a number of years (the article says 7 as of 1970, but I think he got it for a few years after that as well). Photo Credit: (Arkansas Democrat Photo) For Arkansas Capitol Company Furnishes Yule Tree A 38-foot eastern red cedar from Dierks Division lands, now brightly decorated and located in the state capitol rotunda at Little Rock, is the "official" 1970 Christmas tree for the state of Arkansas. The Oklahoma timberlands block also furnished a 35-foot cedar to the First National Bank in Oklahoma City, from company lands near Rock Creek in McCurtain County. The Arkansas tree was felled near Hollis in Perry County and transported to the state capitol on December 7, where state officials took over the task of erecting and decorating it. It was the seventh straight year that the "official" Yule tree has come from Dierks lands. During that period, Conley Culpepper, contract supervisor for the Mountain Pine block, has had the responsibility each year for searching out a tree of the proper shape and dimensions and seeing to it that it got to the capitol in good shape. Once felled, the tree is placed on a large flat-bed truck and whisked to Little Rock with police escort. Culpepper explains that to meet desired specifications, the capitol tree must range in height from 35 to 45 feet and be no more than 10 feet in diameter at its base to allow it to be taken through the large double doors of the capitol building. "It¹s kind of a specific tree," says the veteran forester. "You just don¹t find them growing in bundles." Lighting of the tree is accompanied by a formal ceremony and program each year.3  |

Now fondly referred to as the “Ammo Ashley Sisters” by family, the four sisters Mildred (nicknamed Bill) Whitaker, Trula McGarity, Dorothy (nicknamed Dot) Gregory and Delphia (nicknamed Del) Culpepper worked at Arkansas Ordnance Plant in Jacksonville – a place that produced more than 100 war-related items including detonators, primers and fuses for shells and bombs. According to historical information, the plant provided 88 percent of the detonators and relays used in American bombs during the war. Last week, the sisters sat around a domino table as they were being interviewed by Jack Hill, in preparation for a special entitled “An Arsenal for Democracy” to be aired on Memorial Day on Arkansas Educational Television Network (AETN). “Can you imagine – a young woman was sitting at a table in Jacksonville, Arkansas doing this,” Hill remarked about the sister’s work in the plant. “Here these young women were from Sheridan, Arkansas and a regular part of their vocabulary included words like detonators, fuses, bombs. This is one of the great stories of World War II history.” Other than to family members for the publication of “Move Over ‘Rosie the Riveter’ – Meet the ‘Ammo Ashley’ Sisters,” as done by Chip Culpepper, this is the first time that the sisters have shared their experiences for publication purposes. During their tenure at the plant, the sisters were not allowed to talk about their work. A poster hung inside the combination canteen-bomb shelter, where they had all breaks and meals, reminding them that “Loose Lips Sink Ships.” The sisters said they were constantly reminded of the importance of their jobs to the war effort. Patriotism, then, was at an all time peak” While they sought out the job because the money was good, from $3 to $9 per week, “they also worked there because it was the right thing to do,” said Dot. She was the first sister to go to work at the plant as an apprentice – making 40 cents per hour. “Our family was very patriotic,” she offered. “We wanted to do what we could do to help out. We felt like we were helping win the war. We also felt like we were getting rich.” Prior to going to work there, all four women said they already supported the quote from President Franklin D. Roosevelt that was written inside their employees’ manual that read: “We are now in this war. We are all in it all the way. Every single man, woman and child is a partner in the most tremendous undertaking of our American History.” Dot began working at the plant in 1942, and she was only 20 at the time. She prepared detonators and also operated a machine that completed the end process of making an explosive firing cap. Soon after Dot went to work, Bill, 23, and Trula, 25, followed suit. In 1943, after graduating from high school, 18-year-old Del began working there also. Physicals and typhoid shots were required before employment. A typical day at the plant was actually “kind of boring,” the sisters said. There were several machines in the plant and all were run by steam, Dot recalls. Although each sister performed in more than one capacity during their tenure at the plant, Bill said her jobs including inspecting finished bombs and test firing live detonators. Trula inspected detonator pellets and Del began working on an assembly line making fuses. Then, she was trained and transferred to a machine that compacted “gunpowder” into detonator pellets. They were acutely aware of the safety issues involved with their work. Although safety procedures were in place, detonators would blow up sometimes in machines resulting in an unnerving sound. She said she was always afraid that everything would blow up. “Our work had to be perfect,” Bill offered. “Or, we knew that someone could pay with their life.” She recalled carrying loads of live detonators to a testing area. When anyone approached she recalled the safety warning included her hollering out “Powder.” If something went wrong a supervisor was notified at once, she said. “We didn’t dare let anything go,” she added. “We had a lot of weight on our shoulders.” Working long hours, the sisters recalled that a simple yawn could result in a cotton pad soaked in ammonia being waved under one’s nose. Although they didn’t’ wear the soldier’s uniform or carry a gun, the sisters were required to wear steel-toe safety shoes that looked like “old women’s brogans” and heavy, cotton, blue smocks. Their long hair was held back with “Aunt Jemima looking” bandanas. For the most of their tenure at the plant, the sisters worked different shifts and shared an apartment in Little Rock driving home on weekends to see their parents, Ed and Versie Jane Ashley, and their other three sisters, Joyce, Betty and Shirley. They recalled that gasoline as well as several other staples such as meat and sugar was rationed. And, that because they had the family’s only automobile, their family had to walk to go places through the week. “Daddy had to walk everywhere,” Dot said. Del left the plant in the spring of 1944 to attend college. However, she returned after the summer to work. Bill married in 1944 and moved with her husband to California. Trula also moved to California and married in 1946. Dot and Del were still at the plant in 1945 when they heard the radio report of President Roosevelt’s death. Del married in 1945. Dot, the first of the sisters to go to work at the plant, remained working there until the war was over and helped to supervise the closing. She married in 1946. The sister’s taped interviews will be archived and placed at the Jacksonville Museum of Military History, Hill said. In addition to Memorial Day, the show is also to be aired several times on AETN including May 31, June 2 and June 4, according to Hill. Check television listings for times and dates. Born December 5, 1924, at Sheridan, Ark., she was the fourth of Drew Edward and Versie Jane (Appling) Ashley's seven daughters. "Del" was a remarkable woman. In 1943, at the height of World War II, she graduated from Sheridan High School and quickly joined her three older sisters as a munitions worker at the Arkansas Ordnance Plant (AOP) at Jacksonville, Ark. She meticulously crafted detonators and other highexplosive components for bombs and artillery shells; earning the nickname "Speedy" from her co-workers on the production line was a point of personal pride. During the first half of 1944, she also attended Arkansas State Teachers College (now the University of Central Arkansas) at Conway, Ark., where she began to study nursing, pledged Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority, and worked for the college's Home Economics department. Shortly after the Allied invasion of Europe on "D-Day," she left school to return to AOP, where she continued working fulltime until nearly war's end. On August 24, 1945, she married her childhood sweetheart, Conley E. Culpepper, a freshly returned combat veteran of the 8th Army Air Force's 100th Bomb Group. They briefly lived at Frederick, Okla., Army Air Base until T/Sgt Culpepper was honorably discharged. The couple moved to Monticello, Ark., so he could use his G.I. Bill benefits to attend college. As he earned his forestry degree, Del supported the couple through secretarial work at Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Home for Children, an experience she treasured. The novelty of being one of seven daughters took an ironic twist for Del, as she had seven sons. She is survived by all of her beloved boys and five daughters-in-law: Eddie and Susan (DePriest) Culpepper of Hot Springs Village; Kent Culpepper, Jack Culpepper, Scott and Mary (Whiley) Culpepper, and Charles and Teresa (Blackwell) Culpepper, all of Hot Springs; Mark and Angela (Cook) Culpepper of Lonsdale; and C.C. "Chip" and Karen (Carter) Culpepper of Little Rock. Her sisters Dorothy Gregory and Betty Horton of Sheridan, and Shirley James of Dublin, Ga., also survive her, as does brother-in-law Clyde Sites of Sheridan. Other survivors include her cherished 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, as well as an abundance of nieces and nephews, and countless friends. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 55 years, Conley E. Culpepper; daughter-in-law Jane (Witherspoon) Culpepper; former daughter-in-law Angela (Davis) Culpepper; three sisters Trula McGarity, Mildred Whitaker and Joyce Sites; and five brothers-in-law Hershel McGarity, Emmet Whitaker, Bill Gregory, Carl Horton and Ed James. Her kindness, good humor and patience were her trademarks. And although she was naturally reserved, Del loved words. She was a voracious reader, dabbled at poetry, and mastered a vocabulary that she used with precision. She was also an accomplished singer and joyously performed with her sisters, children, grandchildren, and extended family, as well as at church gatherings and for other organizations. She needed little prompting to sing almost anywhere. The later cruelty of both aphasia and Alzheimer's disease ultimately robbed her of spoken language, but even so, she maintained her ability to sing until very near the end. Del was a devoted, decades long member of Owensville Baptist Church, where she served in numerous capacities, including music/choir director, Sunday School teacher, and as Vacation Bible School director for nearly two decades. She was also a loyal and active member of the Order of the Eastern Star, having held many elected and appointed offices at the local, state and international level. Her lovely voice has been quieted for now, but will always echo in the hearts of her loved ones. Visitations will be held Thursday evening, April 3, 6-8 p.m. at Ashby Funeral Home in Benton and again at 12:30, Friday, April 4, with funeral services beginning at 1:30 at Owensville Baptist Church in Saline County, Ark., officiated by J.D. Courtney and Rick Merryman. A graveside service will follow at Center Grove Cemetery, near Sheridan, Grant County, Ark. Pallbearers are Paul Mays, Nathan White, Sean Culpepper, Tony Culpepper, Ryan Culpepper, Casey Culpepper, Kevin Carlisle, Curtis Winston and Conley Culpepper. Honorary pallbearers are Lisa (Culpepper) Mays, Lori (Culpepper) White, Autumn (Culpepper) Carlisle, Katie Culpepper, Holly Culpepper, Anna Culpepper, her Sunday School Class at Owensville and members of the Order of the Eastern Star (Whittington and Hot Springs National Park chapters). Mr. Culpepper was born March 7, 1918 in the Oak Grove Community near Sheridan in Grant County. He was the son of the late Conley Capus and Annie Atchley Culpepper. . He was reared and received his early education in the Oak Grove Community and at age 11, he and his family moved to Pine Bluff, where he began attending the Pine Bluff schools. Mr. Culpepper worked for 45 years at the Standard Brake and Shoe Foundry retiring as a Molder. Mr. Culpepper was of the Baptist faith. . He was married to the former Ruby Doris Shirkey on August 19, 1972, and she survives him along with three sons; J.C. Culpepper and wife, Sue, of Lono, Arkansas, Norris Culpepper and wife, Norma, and Denver Culpepper and wife, Darlene, all of Oak Grove Community near Sheridan; one daughter, Tammy Laney and husband, David of Little Rock; one sister, Joyce West and husband, Burl of Waxahatchie, Texas, and nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. .
