Biography* | | From Karen Arnold's website: Fred lived in many places. As a child his family moved from Iowa to Oklahoma several times. As a young man he and some of his family including his father homesteaded land in South Dakota near an indian reservation. He farmed and practiced the carpenter trade. After leaving South Dakota, the family moved back to Appanoose Co., IA for a short time then the family intended to move to Mountain Grove, Missouri. By mistake the train tickets were issued to Mountain View, Missouri. The family decided to go on to Mountain View and settled there. Fred met Ina and they were married in 1914. Shortly after marrying they all moved back to Appanoose County, Iowa. He always stayed active. Even after he was blind, he continued to chop his own wood, mow his yard, and even kill chickens by chopping off their heads with an axe. To mow his yard he would take white jugs and set as markers, mow between them and then move the jugs to mark off another area until the yard was mowed.2 |
