John Culpepper of Lawrence Co., MS

M, (22 April 1792 - 18 February 1860)
FatherRev. John Culpepper Jr. of Hancock Co., MS (s 1764 - 1837)
MotherMary Stokes1 (7 Oct 1757 - b Apr 1843)
Extinct Surname?* The family branch headed by John Culpepper of Lawrence Co., MS is believed to have no living male descendants with the Culpepper surname. If you know otherwise, please contact Lew Griffin using the link at the bottom of this page.
Birth*22 April 1792 John was born at Washington Co., Georgia, on 22 April 1792.1
War of 1812*1813 He served in the War of 1812 in 1813
(According to his widow's War of 1812 Pension record, John served as a private in Captain Kemper's Company of Mississippi Militia in the War of 1812. He enlisted 7 October 1813 at Ford in Hancock County, MS, and was discharged there 23 November 1813. John lived in Lawrence County, MS from his discharge in 1813 until his death in 1860. The record also states that he was born around 1791, was a farmer, 6 ft. tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, and light colored hair..)2,3
Tax roll*between 1831 and 1833 A John Culpepper was listed in the 1831 and 1833 Personal Tax Rolls for Hinds County, MS, but it is not known whether this was John Culpepper of Marion Co., MS or John Culpepper of Lawrence Co., MS. Most likely it was the latter.
Marriage*15 July 1835 He married Mary Ferrell at Simpson Co., Mississippi, on 15 July 1835 at age 43. Note that Simpson County, where John and Mary married in 1835, is in between Hinds County (where a John Culpepper paid taxes in 1831 and 1835) and Lawrence County, where John and Mary subsequently lived. The Pearl River flows through or at the edge of all three counties.2
Census*1841 A census listed John as head of household at Lawrence Co., Mississippi, in 1841.4
Tax roll*between 1834 and 1850 John Culpepper was in Lawrence Co., Mississippi records in 1834, 1838, 1840, 1841, and 1850, according to researcher Billie New. Presumably, these were tax records.
Death*18 February 1860 He died at Lawrence Co., Mississippi, on 18 February 1860 at age 67.2

Biography* John Henry (Culpepper) Taylor wrote on 19 Jun 2007: "My uncle Fred Culpepper was never married. Prior to World War II, he enlisted in the U.S.Navy. He served for a period of time and upon the death of his brother Henry, was allowed to leave the service to return home. My mothers recollection is this was due to a law or regulation that permitted an only son to stay with his family. My mother says that at the onset of World War II Fred enlisted in the U.S. Army and was trained as a medical corpsman. She said he was at the invasion of Europe and spent some time under very harsh battlefield conditions. He apparently suffered a nervous breakdown due to the things he had to deal with and was returned to England and then to the U.S. He spent time in a military hospital in Oregon and was then discharged with a disability pension... He spent all his remaining years traveling around the country working were he could and occasionally coming to visit our family for a brief time and then moving on again."1
