Jerry Eugene "Gene" Culpepper, 69, of Hallsville died Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, at a local hospital. He was born in Gadsden, Ala., Sept. 19, 1931, to Howard L. and Ruby Mae Culpepper. He had been a resident of East Texas since 1951. Mr. Culpepper, a salesman for the Made Rite Bottling Co. of Longview, also known as the Dr. Pepper Co., retired after 36 years of employment. He was an avid outdoorsman, especially enjoying fishing and hunting. He also loved to spend time with his grandchildren and regularly enjoyed school and sporting events with his family. Funeral services for Mr. Culpepper will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 2, at Rader Funeral Home Chapel, 1617 Judson Road in Longview, with the Rev. Ted Harold officiating. Interment will follow in Hallsville Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday, March 1, at the funeral home. Mr. Culpepper was preceded in death by his father, Howard L. Culpepper, and a grandaughter, Chassity Culpepper. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; sons and daughters-in-law, Sammy and Linda Culpepper of Longview and Jerry and Becky Culpepper of Hallsville; a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Ken Hartley of White Oak, his brothers and sisters-in-law, Mathon and Evelyn Culpepper of Florida, and Bill and Sudie Culpepper of Ringgold, GA; his mother, Ruby Culpepper of Ashevile, N.C; and his grandchildren..5

They both died in Halifax County, NC where their wills are recorded. Their property was located on Great Fishing Creek in the southern part of the county. This Joseph, I infer, was a descendant of Ambrose Hadley of Isle of Wight Co., Va and Halifax, N. C. possibly through William Hadley, son of Ambrose II. According to Joseph's will, he had a brother Ambrose.

Lydia was the daughter of James Drake and his first wife, Sophia Valentine (believed to be dtr of James Valentine and sister of Jacob). Lydia is named in James Drake's will from Nash Co. NC. 1791. See section on Drakes.

I do not have any thing on John Grizzle and Elizabeth Elam. However, my Wylie came from NC. He served in NC Rev War and lived in Halifax Co., NC as early as June 1784 when the first record of him (a deed) can be found. I think he is a relative/descendant of the Grizzles elsewhere in NC. He is always referred to as Willie or Wylie; I do not know if he had a "full real" name of William.

Biography* In the 26th year of King Henry III., Baron La Zouche had a military summons to attend the king into France, and in ten years afterwards had the whole county of Chester, and all North Wales placed under his government. In the 45th year of the same reign he obtained a charter for a weekly market at Ashby-la -Zouche, in Leicestershire, and for two fairs in the year at Swavesey. About the same time he was constituted warden of all the king's forests south of Trent, as also Sheriff of Northamptonshire. In the 46th year of King Henry III., he was made Justice Itinerant for the cos. of Southampton, Buckingham, and Northampton; and upon the arbitration made by Louis, King of France, between Henry III. and the barons, he was one of the sureties on the behalf of the king. In three years afterwards he was constituted Constable of the Tower of London, and Governor of the castle at Northampton. He was violently assaulted in Westminster Hall, in 1268, by John, Earl of Warren and Surrey, upon occasion of a dispute between them regarding some landed property, and with his son, Roger, who happened to be with him, severely wounded.
